Book excerpt: Mc Namee's detailed and well illustrated new study is about eucharistic symbolism in Early Netherlandish painting. It focuses on the pervading presence of the vested angel in this school of painting and its eucharistic significance. These angels, dressed in every possible variation of the vestements of the subministers of the traditional Solemn High Mass, are represented as serving the Christ in each episode of His life. The history of the vested angel is traced through numerous paintings representing scenes from the life of Christ' from the Annunciation through the Last Judgement. The theological basis of this study is offered in a discussion of Maurice de la Taille's Mysterium Fidei, a theory of Mass that best parallels the concept of Eucharistic symbolism in Early Netherlandish painting. Colour illustrations and over a hundred photographs of the original paintings help the reader to follow this fascinating analysis.

Book How to Attract Investors

Download or read book How to Attract Investors written by Uffe Bundgaard-Jorgensen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investors are often looked upon as one homogeneous group of people with money ready to invest; however, this group is very diverse. In some ways, investors are like car buyers who seek common denominators in a car, such as the engine, wheels, brakes and seats, but the car they end up buying depends on personal preferences, needs and the money available. For investors the common denominator is the good business case, the ‘engine, wheels, brakes, seats’ being a comprehensive business plan. However, which business case they will prefer in the end depends on their personal preference and financial capacity. How to Attract Investors takes the reader into the minds of the investors, addressing many of the challenges connected to investor search and negotiation and living with investors as co-owners. Even the finest skills of the brightest entrepreneurs wouldn’t be complete without the knowledge of the investor’s mind. This is the book that unravels it, layer by layer.

It embraces the incidents of his removal from Jerusalem to Cæsarea, of his imprisonment at the latter place, of his journey to Rome for trial before Cæsar, and of his final martyrdom. The design of the poem as a whole is to present, through conduct on Paul's part and through speech from him, a living portrait of the man that he was, together with a reflex of his most central and most characteristic teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supernatural phenomena and causalities played an important role in medieval society. Religious practice was relying upon a set of cult images and the sacral status of these depictions of divine or supernatural persons became the object of heated debates and provoked iconoclastic reactions. The miraculous intervention of saints or other divine agents, the wondrous realities beyond understanding, or the manifestations of magic attributed to diabolic forces, were contained by a variety of discourses, described and discussed in religion, philosophy, chronicles, literature and fiction, and also in a large number of pictures and material objects. The nine essays in this collection discusses how supernatural phenomena – especially angels and devils – found visual manifestation in Latin and Eastern Christianity as well as Judaism in the late medieval, early renaissance period.

Download or read book Angelology written by Dylan David Potter and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angels have fascinated people for millennia because they point to an invisible dimension that parallels our own. This book examines the different ways that angels have been portrayed at certain key points in biblical and theological history. By tracing patterns in the appearance of higher-order beings from their ancient Near Eastern origins, the Hebrew Scriptures, the writings of Pseudo-Dionysius, Thomas Aquinas, Karl Barth, and even modern New Age writers, Angelology demonstrates that angels allow various authors to emphasise divine transcendence, immanence, and creativity. Identifying the theological purpose underlying the depiction of angels at certain key points in the history of their use raises new questions about how angels are to be understood by people today.

Book The New Art of the Fifteenth Century Faith and Art in Florance and The Netherlands

Download or read book The New Art of the Fifteenth Century Faith and Art in Florance and The Netherlands written by Shirley Neilsen Blum and published by WW Norton. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh look at the early Renaissance, considering Florentine and Netherlandish art as a single phenomenon, at once deeply spiritual and entirely new. Adam and Eve are driven from the Garden of Eden into a rocky landscape, their naked bodies lit by a cold sun, their gestures and expressions a study in shame and anguish. A serious man, well attired, kneels in prayer before the Virgin and Child, close enough to touch them almost, his furrowed brow setting off the saintly perfection of their features. In fifteenth-century Florence and Flanders, painters were using an arsenal of new techniques—including perspective, anatomy, and the accurate treatment of light and shade—to present traditional religious subjects with an unprecedented immediacy and emotional power. Their art was the product of a shared Christian culture, and their patrons included not only nobles and churchmen but also the middle classes of these thriving commercial centers. Shirley Neilsen Blum offers a new synthesis of this remarkable period in Western art—between the refinements of the Gothic and the classicism of the High Renaissance—when the mystical was made to seem real. In the first part of her text, Blum traces the emergence of a new naturalism in the sculpture of Claus Sluter and Donatello, and then in the painting of Van Eyck and Masaccio. In the second part, she compares scenes from the Infancy and Passion of Christ as rendered by artists from North and South. Exploring both the images themselves and the theological concepts that lie behind them, she re-creates, as far as possible, the experience of the contemporary fifteenth-century viewer. Abundantly illustrated with color plates of masterworks by Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Rogier van der Weyden, and others, this thought-provoking volume will appeal equally to general readers and students of art history.

Book Agency Visuality and Society at the Chartreuse de Champmol

Download or read book Agency Visuality and Society at the Chartreuse de Champmol written by SherryC.M. Lindquist and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grounded in archival sources, this interdisciplinary study explores the profound historical significance of the mausoleum of the Valois Dukes of Burgundy - the Chartreuse de Champmol. Although the monument is well known as the site of pivotal works of art by Claus Sluter, Melchior Broederlam, Jean de Beaumetz and others, until now art historians have not considered how these works functioned at the center of a complex social matrix. Sherry Lindquist here considers the sacred subjects of the various sculptures and paintings not merely as devotional tools or theological statements, but as profoundly influential social instruments that negotiated complex interactions of power. Lindquist's sophisticated discussion coordinates analysis of primary sources with the most up-to-date scholarship in the field of art history, not only with respect to late medieval Burgundian art, but also to more theoretical questions pertaining to reception.
