Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor George Patrick Leonard Walker was one of the fathers of modern quantitative volcanology and arguably the foremost volcanologist of the twentieth century. In his long career, George studied a wide spectrum of volcanological problems and in doing so influenced almost every branch of the field. This volume, which honours his memory and his contributions to the field of volcanology, contains a collection of papers inspired by, and building upon, many of the ideas previously developed by George. Many of the contributors either directly studied under and worked with George, or were profoundly influenced by his ideas. The topics broadly fall under the three themes of lava flows and effusion, explosive volcanism, and volcanoes and their infrastructure.

Book The Impacts of Igneous Systems on Sedimentary Basins and their Energy Resource

Download or read book The Impacts of Igneous Systems on Sedimentary Basins and their Energy Resource written by B. Kilhams and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many sedimentary basins worldwide contain extrusive and intrusive igneous rock sequences, and these rocks and associated magmatic processes can exert profound influences on a diverse range of basin processes and elements, including multiscale structural and tectonic development, heat flow, transport of hydrocarbons and other basinal fluids, and the hydraulic properties and integrity of reservoir and sealing units. Recent years have witnessed increased focus on improved understanding of igneous processes in basins to aid hydrocarbon exploration and development projects, and there is growing interest in the multifaceted role that igneous sequences in basins may play in the energy transition, for example as components of carbon capture and storage projects, and sources of geothermal energy, natural hydrogen and helium. This volume showcases state-of-the-art research from both academia and industry, drawing on global examples and addressing reservoir-to-plate scales, providing critical new data, knowledge and technological capabilities that highlight the opportunities, complexities and potential pitfalls associated with unlocking the energy resources of sedimentary basins impacted by igneous processes.

  • Author : John J. Mahoney
  • Publisher : American Geophysical Union
  • Release : 1997-01-23
  • ISBN : 0875900828
  • Pages : 441 pages

Download or read book Large Igneous Provinces written by John J. Mahoney and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1997-01-23 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 100. Continental flood basalts, volcanic passive margins, and oceanic plateaus represent the largest known volcanic episodes on our planet, yet they are not easily explained by plate tectonics. Indeed, some are likely to record periods when the outward transfer of material and energy from the Earth's interior operated in a significantly different mode than at present. In recent years, interest in large-scale mafic magmatism has surged as high-precision geochronological, detailed geochemical, and increasingly sophisticated geophysical data have become available for many provinces. However, the sheer amount of recent material, often in the form of detailed collaborative research projects, can overwhelm newcomers to the field and experts alike as the literature continues to grow dramatically. The need for an up-to-date review volume on a sizable subset of the major continental and oceanic flood basalt provinces, termed large igneous provinces, was recognized by the Commission on Large-Volume Basaltic Provinces (International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior), and the co-editors were charged with organizing and implementing such a volume. We hope that this volume will be valuable to researchers and graduate students worldwide, particularly to petrologists, geochemists, geochronologists, geodynamicists, and plate-tectonics specialists; it may also interest planetologists, oceanographers, and atmospheric scientists.

  • Release : 2018-12-17
  • ISBN : 1501509675
  • Pages : 536 pages

Download or read book Volatiles in Magmas written by Michael R. Carroll and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 30 of Reviews in Mineralogy introduces in understanding the behavior of magmatic volatiles and their influence on a wide variety of geological phenomena; in doing this it also becomes apparent that there remain many questions outstanding. The range of topics we have tried to cover is broad, going from atomisticscale aspects of volatile solubility mechanisms and attendant effects on melt physical properties, to the chemistry of volcanic gases and the concentrations of volatiles in magmas, to the global geochemical cycles of volatiles. The reader should quickly see that much progress has been made since Bowen voiced his concerns about Maxwell demons, but like much scientific progress, answers to old questions have prompted even greater numbers of new questions. The Voltiles in Magmas course was organized and transpired at the Napa Valley Sheraton Hotel in California, December 2-4, 1994, just prior to the Fall Meetings of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco.

Book Large Igneous Provinces and their Plumbing Systems

Download or read book Large Igneous Provinces and their Plumbing Systems written by R. K. Srivastava and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identification of large-volume, short-duration mafic magmatic events of intraplate affinity in both continental and oceanic settings on the Earth and other planets provides invaluable clues for understanding several vital geological issues of current concern. Of particular importance is understanding the assembly and dispersal of supercontinents through Earth’s history, dramatic climate change events including mass extinctions, and processes that have produced a wide range of large igneous province (LIP)-related resources, such as Ni–Cu–PGE, Au, U, base metals and petroleum. This volume comprises 21 contributions on the latest developments and new information on LIPs and their plumbing systems and presents methodical studies on different components of LIP plumbing systems. These articles are especially helpful in understanding continental break-up events, regional domal uplift and a variety of metallogenic systems, as well as the temporal and spatial distribution of LIPs, their origin and their likely links to mantle plumes/superplumes.

Book Field Volcanology A Tribute to the Distinguished Career of Don Swanson

This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don Swanson, who received the GSA Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Petrology, and Volcanology Division's Distinguished Geologic Career award in 2016, has adopted a detailed, field-oriented approach to studying problems of great volcanologic importance across a range of compositions and spatio-temporal scales. Swanson's work has resulted in a series of fundamental contributions that have advanced understanding of the Columbia River flood basalts, Cascade volcanic arc, and Hawai'i, and his insights have been applied not only around the world, but across the solar system. This volume emphasizes the role of field volcanology as a window into better understanding volcanic processes past and present, and highlights, in particular, those places and processes where Swanson's insights have been particularly impactful.

Book The Formation and Evolution of Africa

Download or read book The Formation and Evolution of Africa written by Douwe J. J. van Hinsbergen and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2011 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African continent preserves a long geological record that covers almost 75% of Earth's history. The Pan-African orogeny (c. 600-500 Ma) brought together old continental kernels (West Africa, Congo, Kalahari and Tanzania) to form Gondwana and subsequently the supercontinent Pangaea by the late Palaeozoic. The break-up of Pangaea since the Jurassic and Cretaceous, primarily through opening of the Central Atlantic, Indian, and South Atlantic oceans, in combination with the complicated subduction history to the north, gradually shaped the African continent. This volume contains 18 contributions that discuss the geology of Africa from the Archaean to the present day.
