Book excerpt: An eminent film critic engages Bollywood and beyond in conversation about Irrfan Khan’s art, craft, life and legacy. A spellbinding performer, Irrfan Khan was also a seeker who never stopped honing his skills, each new work a revelation, his oeuvre transformative for Hindi cinema. From his National School of Drama days to his nearly decade-long stint in television and subsequently his arrival in the movies, everyone who watched Irrfan knew they were in the presence of someone special. With his death from an incurable cancer, we lost an actor nonpareil. What is it that gave Irrfan, an ‘outsider’ to Bollywood, his distinction? What has been his contribution to cinema? How does one measure his legacy? Long-time film critic Shubhra Gupta asks these and other probing questions to members of the film fraternity who knew Irrfan, worked with him or observed him closely – Sutapa Sikdar, Shailja Kejriwal, Shyam Benegal, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Vishal Bhardwaj, Naseeruddin Shah, Mira Nair, Konkona Sen Sharma, Anup Singh, Tillotama Shome, Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, among several others. As they discuss Irrfan’s films, his craft, and his philosophy as an actor, what emerges is a deeply layered, complex and endlessly absorbing portrait of one of Indian cinema’s most influential artistes. Abuzz with a polyphony of perspectives on the actor and Hindi cinema at large, this is a rich collectible for Irrfan’s admirers and cinephiles alike.

Book excerpt: Splattered Ink- The murky world of journalism gives you an insiders view of journalism like you have never seen before. It blows the lid on the violence, pressures, corruption and moral dilemma a journalist faces on a daily basis while trying to do his job. It takes you on rollercoaster ride through corrupt politicians, stage-managed encounter killing and brutal underworld dons. In a time where closest friends become dangerous enemies both in the police as well as underworld, Raj choses journalism as a career, a choice that he would have to pay with his life. Raj Nair was an ordinary bloke with big dreams. All he wanted was to follow his dreams, be honest to his profession and do what he was best at, exposing the dark underbelly of society with his pen. He was not to know that, with every word he wrote, he was a step closer to a violent death. Rajs friends were from civil society as well as the underworld. He was warned constantly that the criminals he knew could spell trouble for him but it was the moral torchbearers of society that would plot his death. The bullets may have been shot from a gun owned by the underworld. But it was not the underworld that killed him. The plot was far more sinister. His stories attracted many enemies. Politicians, businessmen, even colleagues. And as fate would have it, even the heavenly stars conspired against him and brought all these enemies under one roof. Every story, whether it was on the sordid life of film stars, cricket betting or stock market insider trading was an extra nail in his coffin

Book Performative Histories Foundational Fictions

Download or read book Performative Histories Foundational Fictions written by Anu Koivunen and published by Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura. This book was released on 2003-09-17 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Films are integral to national imagination. Promotional publicity markets “domestic films” not only as entertaining, exciting, or moving, but also as topical and relevant in different ways. Reviewers assess new films with reference to other films and cultural products as well as social and political issues. Through such interpretive framings by contemporaries and later generations, popular cinema is embedded both in national imagination and endless intertextual and intermedial frameworks. Moreover, films themselves become signs to be cited and recycled as illustrations of cultural, social, and political history as well as national mentality. In the age of television, “old films” continue to live as history and memory. In Performative Histories, Foundational Fictions, Anu Koivunen analyzes the historicity as well as the intertextuality and intermediality of film reception by focusing on a cycle of Finnish family melodrama and its key role in thinking about gender, sexuality, nation, and history. Close-reading posters, advertisements, publicity-stills, trailers, review journalism, and critical commentary, she demonstrates how The Women of Niskavuori (1938 and 1958), Loviisa (1946), Heta Niskavuori (1952), Aarne Niskavuori (1954), Niskavuori Fights (1957), and Niskavuori (1984) have operated as sites for imagining “our agrarian past”, our Heimat and heritage as well as “the strong Finnish woman” or “the weak man in crisis”. Based on extensive empirical research, Koivunen argues that the Niskavuori films have mobilized readings in terms of history and memory, feminist nationalism and men’s movement, left-wing allegories and right-wing morality as well as realism and melodrama. Through processes of citation, repetition, and re-cycling the films have acquired not only a heterogeneous and contradictory interpretive legacy, but also an affective force.
