Download or read book Verticillium Wilts written by G. F. Pegg and published by CABI. This book was released on 2002 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genus Verticillium Nees represents one of the world's major fungal pathogens, affecting crop plants mostly in the cool and warm temperate regions, it also occurs in sub-tropical and tropical areas. There are some six species which cause severe wilting in trees, herbaceous plants and plantation crops. Other species are responsible for non-wilt diseases of banana and mushroom, another species infects insects. The monograph provides a comprehensive reference source on Verticillium, enabling research workers to see what has already been achieved and to identify the many new areas of research in which original contributions could be made to further the understanding and control of this important pathogen and the disease it causes.

Book Fungal Wilt Diseases of Plants

Download or read book Fungal Wilt Diseases of Plants written by Marshal Mace and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungal Wilt Diseases of Plants focuses on wilt diseases caused by the fungal genera Verticillium, Fusarium, and Ceratocystis. Special attention is given to the interactions of physiological, biochemical, and anatomical factors, as these relate to pathogenesis and mechanisms of disease resistance. Organized into 16 chapters, this book begins with a description, in a historical perspective, of the major research themes in fungal wilt diseases. It then looks into the worldwide status of this plant disease. The three subsequent chapters describe the epidemiology and life cycle of the major fungal wilt pathogens in Fusarium, Verticillium, and Ceratocystis. This book also provides an in-depth view of the genetics and biochemistry of these pathogens; the nature of pathogenesis and the effects of wilt pathogens on host-water relations; and the sources and genetics of host resistance in field and fruit crops, vegetable crops, and shade trees. Other chapters are dedicated to the biochemistry, physiology, and the anatomical aspects of resistance and to the progress in the biological and chemical control of these pathogens. This text will be of great value to graduate students and senior research scientists in plant pathology, physiology, and biochemistry, who are specifically involved in studying wilt diseases and host-parasite interactions. It will provide them the detailed background information needed to supplement their specialized research interests.

Book Agricultural Productivity and Producer Behavior

Download or read book Agricultural Productivity and Producer Behavior written by Wolfram Schlenker and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural yields have increased steadily in the last half century, particularly since the Green Revolution. At the same time, inflation-adjusted agricultural commodity prices have been trending downward as increases in supply outpace the growth of demand. Recent severe weather events, biofuel mandates, and a switch toward a more meat-heavy diet in emerging economies have nevertheless boosted commodity prices. Whether this is a temporary jump or the beginning of a longer-term trend is an open question. Agricultural Productivity and Producer Behavior examines the factors contributing to the remarkably steady increase in global yields and assesses whether yield growth can continue. This research also considers whether agricultural productivity growth has been, and will be, associated with significant environmental externalities. Among the topics studied are genetically modified crops; changing climatic factors; farm production responses to government regulations including crop insurance, transport subsidies, and electricity subsidies for groundwater extraction; and the role of specific farm practices such as crop diversification, disease management, and water-saving methods. This research provides new evidence that technological as well as policy choices influence agricultural productivity.

Book Verticillium Dahliae Causes the Fungal Wilting Disease of Cotton Plants Grown on the Mississippi State North Farm

Download or read book Verticillium Dahliae Causes the Fungal Wilting Disease of Cotton Plants Grown on the Mississippi State North Farm written by Fahad Mohammedsaleh Albukhari and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence and spread of Verticillium wilt were observed in cotton plants at the R.R. Foil Plant Science Research Center at Mississippi State during the late summer in 2013 and 2014. Several fungi with different morphology and growth characteristics were isolated from diseased cotton plants. Genomic DNA was extracted from the isolated fungal species and used in molecular typing via PCR amplification and DNA sequencing analysis of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. A total of five fungal genera were identified, and Verticillium sp. was the most frequently isolated genus. The isolated Verticillium strains could be Verticillium dahliae, Verticillium longisporum or even Verticillium albo-atrum. A PCR-based genotyping method using VTA2 (Verticillium transcription activator) gene specific primers confirmed that the isolated Verticillium strain was Verticillium dahliae, and it caused Verticillium wilt in Mississippi cotton plants. Pathogenicity tests (Koch’s postulates) confirmed the earlier qualitative identifications of Verticillium dahliae in the greenhouse.

Book Potato Biology and Biotechnology

Download or read book Potato Biology and Biotechnology written by Dick Vreugdenhil and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past 15-20 years major discoveries have been concluded on potato biology and biotechnology. Important new tools have been developed in the area of molecular genetics, and our understanding of potato physiology has been revolutionized due to amenability of the potato to genetic transformation. This technology has impacted our understanding of the molecular basis of plant-pathogen interaction and has also opened new opportunities for the use of the potato in a variety of non-food biotechnological purposes. This book covers the potato world market as it expands further into the new millennium. Authors stress the overriding need for stable yields to eliminate human hunger and poverty, while considering solutions to enhance global production and distribution. It comprehensively describes genetics and genetic resources, plant growth and development, response to the environment, tuber quality, pests and diseases, biotechnology and crop management. Potato Biology is the most valuable reference available for all professionals involved in the potato industry, plant biologists and agronomists. Offers an understanding of the social, economic and market factors that influence production and distribution Discusses developments and useful traits in transgenic biology and genetic engineering The first reference entirely devoted to understanding new advances in potato biology and biotechnology
