Book Turbulent Buoyant Jets and Plumes

Download or read book Turbulent Buoyant Jets and Plumes written by Wolfgang Rodi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science & Applications of Heat and Mass Transfer: Reports, Reviews, & Computer Programs, Volume 6: Turbulent Buoyant Jets and Plumes focuses on the formation, properties, characteristics, and reactions of turbulent jets and plumes. The selection first offers information on the mechanics of turbulent buoyant jets and plumes and turbulent buoyant jets in shallow fluid layers. Discussions focus on submerged buoyant jets into shallow fluid, horizontal surface or interface jets into shallow layers, fundamental considerations, and turbulent buoyant jets (forced plumes). The manuscript then examines a turbulence model for buoyant flows and its application to vertical buoyant jets, including mathematical model, calculation of vertical buoyant jets, and explanation of velocity and temperature spreading in pure jets and pure plumes. The publication is a dependable reference for scientists and readers interested in turbulent buoyant jets and plumes.

Book Turbulent Nonbuoyant Or Buoyant Jets Discharged Into Flowing Or Quiescent Fluids

Download or read book Turbulent Nonbuoyant Or Buoyant Jets Discharged Into Flowing Or Quiescent Fluids written by Tzeng-Long Chan and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two closely related problems are investigated: round turbulent nonbuoyant jets in cross-streams, and inclined turbulent buoyant jets in quiescent homogeneous fluids. Experiments were conducted for the first problem at a jet Reynolds number of 200,000. Pressure distributions on the jet-exit plane, and velocity distributions in the center plane were measured for values. Data on drag forces, jet centerlines, half-widths, and centerline velocities were obtained from the experiments. An integral-type analysis was carried out for the two problems investigated. The equations are solved in Cartesian coordinates for the near-field of both problems and for the far-field of the nonbuoyant jet, and in a natural coordinate system for the curvilinear zone of the nonbuoyant jet. (Author Modified Abstract).

Book Recent Research Advances in the Fluid Mechanics of Turbulent Jets and Plumes

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging problems involvrllg jet and plume phenomena are common to many areas of fundamental and applied scientific research, and an understanding of plume and jet behaviour is essential in many geophysical and industrial contexts. For example, in the field of meteorology, where pollutant dispersal takes place by means of atmospheric jets and plumes formed either naturally under conditions of convectively-driven flow in the atmospheric boundary layer, or anthropogenically by the release of pollutants from tall chimneys. In other fields of geophysics, buoyant plumes and jets are known to play important roles in oceanic mixing processes, both at the relatively large scale (as in deep water formation by convective sinking) and at the relatively small scale (as with plume formation beneath ice leads, for example). In the industrial context, the performances of many engineering systems are determined primarily by the behaviour of buoyant plumes and jets. For example, (i) in sea outfalls, where either sewage or thermal effluents are discharged into marine and/or freshwater environments, (ii) in solar ponds, where buoyant jets are released under density interfaces, (iii) in buildings, where thermally-generated plumes affect the air quality and ventilation properties of architectural environments, (iv) in rotating machinery where fluid jet~ are used for cooling purposes, and (v) in long road and rail tunnels, where safety and ventilation prcedures rely upon an understanding of the behaviour of buoyant jets. In many other engineering and oceanographic contexts, the properties of jets and plumes are of great importance.

Book Interaction of a Buoyant Turbulent Planar Jet with a Co flowing Wind

Download or read book Interaction of a Buoyant Turbulent Planar Jet with a Co flowing Wind written by Milton M. Klein and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic theory of buoyant motion of a free planar heated jet in still air is extended to account for environmental winds from the same direction as the jet, that is, co-flowing winds. The model is applicable for wind and jet velocities up to 100 m/sec, and jet temperatures up to three times the ambient. Calculations are made for initial jet velocities of 5 and 20 m/sec and temperature excesses, relative to ambient temperature, of 0.3 and 1. For light winds relative to the initial jet velocity the vertical velocity and centerline trajectory of the plume rise rapidly with distance from the jet source. This is similar to that found with the classic theory for still air. As the wind speed approaches the initial jet velocity, the rise of the jet plume with distance from the source is much more gradual. For all wind speeds, the axial jet velocity and temperature decrease rapidly with distance from the jet source, until they become almost constant at short distances downstream. A similarity rule is derived which preserves dynamic similarity in scaling from a given system to another system. For low wind speeds the procedure is close to that based on constant Froude number. Book Calculation of the Buoyant Motion of a Turbulent Planar Heated Jet in an Opposing Air Stream

Download or read book Calculation of the Buoyant Motion of a Turbulent Planar Heated Jet in an Opposing Air Stream written by Milton M. Klein and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broad experimental and theoretical program is being conducted to aid in the development of an operational warm fog dispersal system which utilizes momentum driven ground based heat sources. To help determine optimum heat and thrust combinations for the system, investigations are being made of the buoyant motion of heated turbulent jets both coflowing (wind and jet in the same direction) and counterflowing (wind and jet opposite). The investigation of the coflowing jet has been completed and in addition a model has been developed from which the dynamic characteristics of a heated counterflowing jet in the absence of buoyancy can be calculated. The present investigation is concerned with the effect of buoyancy upon the motion of a counterflowing jet. The lower portion of the trajectory, which has been calculated by the present model, is in fair to good agreement with the corresponding experimental curve, the calculated curve tending to be somewhat higher than that obtained experimentally. The calculated upper part of the trajectory, obtained from a model which gives the deflection of a jet in a crosswind, is in good agreement with experiment.

Book Interaction of a Buoyant Turbulent Round Jet with a Co flowing Wind

Download or read book Interaction of a Buoyant Turbulent Round Jet with a Co flowing Wind written by Milton M. Klein and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broad effort is being conducted to develop an operational Warm Fog Dispersal System (WFDS) using ground-based heat sources. In order to determine the optimum heat and thrust for the combustors in the WFDS, investigations have been made of the buoyant motion in round- and plane-heated turbulent jets in co-flowing (that is, same direction) wind fields. This report describes a method of calculating the round jet case. The method can be used for jet velocities of 100m/sec or less, wind velocities below or equal to the jet velocity, and jet temperatures up to 3 times the ambient value. Initial jet velocities of 5 and 20m/sec and temperature excesses, relative to the ambient temperature, of .3 and 1 were selected for the calculations.
