Book excerpt: Two young girls sneak into the grounds of a hospital where they find a disturbing moment of silence in a rose garden. A couple grows a plant that blooms underground, invisibly, to their neighbour's consternation. A cat worries about its sleepwalking owner, who recieves a mysterious visitor while he is aleep. After a ten year absence a young man visits his uncle on the 24th floor of a high rise floating in the air. Can Xue is a master of the dreamscape, crafting stories that inhabit the space where fantasy and reality meet.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From August 24-29, 1980 the international "Symposium on the Study of Motion Perception; Recent Developments and Applications", sponsored by NATO and organized by the editors of this book, was held in Veldhoven, the Netherlands. The meeting was attended by about eighty scholars, including psychologists, neurologists, physicists and other scientists, from fourteen different countries. During the symposium some fifty research papers were presented and a series of tutorial review papers were read and discussed. The research presentations have been published in a special issue of the international journal of psychonomics "Acta Psychologica" (Vol. 48, 1981). The present book is a compilation of the tutorial papers. The tutorials were arranged around early versions of the chapters now appearing in this book. The long discussions at the Veldhoven tutorial sessions resulted in extensive revisions of the texts prior to this publication. Unfortunately this led to a delay in publication, but we feel that this was justified by a greater depth of understanding which, in our opinion, has significantly increased the quality of the book. As they now stand, the chapters cover most of the issues relevant to the study of motion perception. Also they clearly reflect the intensive exchange of knowledge that took place during the symposium. As such we think that this book can be used both as an advanced text for students and scientists alike and as a comprehensive reference source.

Book Five Spice Street

Download or read book Five Spice Street written by Can Xue and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full-length novel by Chinese author Can Xue to appear in English Five Spice Street tells the story of a street in an unnamed city whose inhabitants speculate on the life of a mysterious Madam X. The novel interweaves their endless suppositions into a work that is at once political parable and surreal fantasia. Some think X is 50 years old; others that she is 22. Some believe she has occult powers and has thereby enslaved the young men of the street; others think she is a clever trickster playing mind games with the common people. Who is Madam X? How has she brought the good people of Five Spice Street to their knees either in worship or in exasperation? The unknown narrator takes no sides in the endless interplay of visions, arguments, and opinions. The investigation rages, as the street becomes a Walpurgisnacht of speculations, fantasies, and prejudices. Madam X is a vehicle whereby the people bare their souls, through whom they reveal themselves even as they try to penetrate the mystery of her extraordinary powers.Five Spice Street is one of the most astonishing novels of the past twenty years. Exploring the collective consciousness of this little street of ordinary people, Can Xue penetrates the deepest existential anxieties of the present day—whether in China or in the West—where the inevitable impermanence of identity struggles with the narrative within which identity must compose itself.

Book A High Rate Virtual Instrument of Marine Vehicle Motions for Underwater Navigation and Ocean Remote Sensing

Download or read book A High Rate Virtual Instrument of Marine Vehicle Motions for Underwater Navigation and Ocean Remote Sensing written by Chrystel Gelin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-22 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dead-Reckoning aided with Doppler velocity measurement has been the most common method for underwater navigation for small vehicles. Unfortunately DR requires frequent position recalibrations and underwater vehicle navigation systems are limited to periodic position update when they surface. Finally standard Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers are unable to provide the rate or precision required when used on a small vessel. To overcome this, a low cost high rate motion measurement system for an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) with underwater and oceanographic purposes is proposed. The proposed onboard system for the USV consists of an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with accelerometers and rate gyros, a GPS receiver, a flux-gate compass, a roll and tilt sensor and an ADCP. Interfacing all the sensors proved rather challenging because of their different characteristics. The proposed data fusion technique integrates the sensors and develops an embeddable software package, using real time data fusion methods, for a USV to aid in navigation and control as well as controlling an onboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). While ADCPs non-intrusively measure water flow, the vessel motion needs to be removed to analyze the data and the system developed provides the motion measurements and processing to accomplish this task.

Book Earth Vibration Effects and Abatement for Military Facilities

Download or read book Earth Vibration Effects and Abatement for Military Facilities written by Günter Waas and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical method is presented for the analysis of steady-state wave propagation problems in linearly elastic or viscoelastic media of infinite extent. Plane and axisymmetric geometries are considered which consist of a finite irregular region joined to semi-infinite layered regions. By this method, torsional and vertical vibrations of circular footings on, or embedded in, homogeneous and inhomogeneous soil layers over rock are studied. The irregular region is discretized by compatible finite elements, while the semi-infinite layered regions are discretized by subdividing the layers into thin sublayers and by assuming that within each sublayer the displacements vary linearly in the direction normal to the layers. In the direction parallel to the layers, the displacements are expanded into a finite number of plane or axisymmetric propagating and decaying wave modes which are determined by the solution of algebraic eigenvalue problems. Dynamic stiffness matrices are developed which uniquely relate nodal forces to simultaneous nodal displacements at the boundary between the irregular and the layered regions and thus represent the dynamic response of the semi-infinite layered regions.

Book Dynamic Stability of Hydraulic Gates and Engineering for Flood Prevention

Download or read book Dynamic Stability of Hydraulic Gates and Engineering for Flood Prevention written by Ishii, Noriaki and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2017-08-11 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic gates are utilized in multiple capacities in modern society. As such, the failure of these gates can have disastrous consequences, and it is imperative to develop new methods to avoid these occurrences. Dynamic Stability of Hydraulic Gates and Engineering for Flood Prevention is a critical reference source containing scholarly research on engineering techniques and mechanisms to decrease the failure rate of hydraulic gates. Including a range of perspectives on topics such as fluid dynamics, vibration mechanisms, and flow stability, this book is ideally designed for researchers, academics, engineers, graduate students, and practitioners interested in the study of hydraulic gate structure.
