Clarke 1933 p. 434 In oceans and lakes, zooplankton often make diel vertical migrations (DVM), descending at dawn and coming up again in late afternoon and evening. The small animals cover distances of 10–40 m in lakes or even a few hundred metres in the open oceans. Although not as spectacular as migrations of birds or the massive movements of large mammals over the African savannas, the numbers involved are very large and the biomass exceed the bulk of the African herds. For example, in the Antarctic oceans swarms of “Krill” may cover kilometres across, with thousands of individuals per cubic metre. These Euphausiids are food for whales, the most bulky animals on earth. Zooplankton are key species in the pelagic food web, intermediary between algae and ?sh, and thus essential for the functioning of the pelagic community. Prey for many, they have evolved diverse strategies of survival and DVM is the most imp- tant one. Most ?sh are visually hunting predators and need a high light intensity to detect the often transparent animals. By moving down, the well-lit surface layers are avoided but they have to come up again at night to feed on algae.

They represent up to 90-97% of the marine zooplankton biomass, but may also be conspicuous in freshwater systems. Copepods are the linchpin of aquatic foodwebs; they prey upon phytoplankton while simultaneously acting as a staple food for higher trophic level organisms, contribute to the vertical fluxes of carbon and sustain recycled production through the excretion of ammonia. Copepods can also signal possible climate change and are indicators of the effects of ocean acidification. They are also used as model animals for ecotoxicological and molecular studies, and might be adopted as control agents of disease vectors.Current studies are rapidly exploring multiple lines of research with an intended purpose to provide an up-to-date snapshot of some hot topics in the study of the distribution, biology and ecology of these ubiquitous crustaceans. On the basis of data obtained by the 33rd cruise of the Vityaz' we studied the migrations of copepods and euphausiids in the northern part of the Indian Ocean (Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea). In order to study the vertical distribution of zooplankton, 3 to 5 series of samples were taken daily at 5 diurnal stations. In addition, we sampled the plankton during the day (0700-1700) and night (2100-0400) at a number of stations. About 30 major species of copepods and all the species of euphausiids found in the samples were accounted for. This material enabled us to divide all the copepods of the investigated area into groups based on their vertical distribution. (Author).
