Es necesario adoptar medidas para lograr que los sistemas agroalimentarios sean más resilientes, eficientes, sostenibles e inclusivos. EL ESTADO MUNDIAL DE LA AGRICULTURA Y LA ALIMENTACION 2021 presenta indicadores a nivel nacional de la resiliencia de los sistemas agroalimentarios. Los indicadores miden la solidez de la producción primaria y la disponibilidad de alimentos, así como el acceso físico y económico a los mismos. Por tanto, estos indicadores pueden ayudar a evaluar la capacidad de los sistemas agroalimentarios nacionales para absorber las perturbaciones y tensiones, un aspecto clave de la resiliencia. El informe analiza las vulnerabilidades de las cadenas de suministro de alimentos y la manera en que los hogares rurales afrontan los riesgos y las perturbaciones. En él se analizan las opciones para reducir al mínimo las compensaciones de factores a que puede dar lugar la creación de resiliencia con la eficiencia y la inclusividad. El objetivo es ofrecer orientación sobre políticas para mejorar la resiliencia de la cadena de suministro de alimentos, apoyar los medios de vida en los sistemas agroalimentarios y, en caso de producirse alteraciones, garantizar el acceso sostenible a alimentos suficientes, inocuos y nutritivos para todos.

Biodiversity for food and agriculture is the diversity of plants, animals and micro-organisms at genetic, species and ecosystem levels, present in and around crop, livestock, forest and aquatic production systems. It is essential to the structure, functions and processes of these systems, to livelihoods and food security, and to the supply of a wide range of ecosystem services. It has been managed or influenced by farmers, livestock keepers, forest dwellers, fish farmers and fisherfolk for hundreds of generations. Prepared through a participatory, country-driven process, the report draws on information from 91 country reports to provide a description of the roles and importance of biodiversity for food and agriculture, the drivers of change affecting it and its current status and trends. It describes the state of efforts to promote the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity for food and agriculture, including through the development of supporting policies, legal frameworks, institutions and capacities. It concludes with a discussion of needs and challenges in the future management of biodiversity for food and agriculture. The report complements other global assessments prepared under the auspices of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, which have focused on the state of genetic resources within particular sectors of food and agriculture.

This book is inspired by this statement and explores whether it holds in a specific country, Spain, where climatic conditions – Spain is one of the most arid countries of the European Union - would fully justify saying that water problems are due to physical water scarcity. The metrification of water uses and their monetary value is a first important step in understanding how reallocation of water among users could help mitigating many of current water problems in Spain. However, water reallocation among users or from users to nature is far from simple. Initiatives portrayed as the solution to the water governance ‘jigsaw’ – e.g. water trade, improved water use efficiency, users collective action, public participation – are not free of difficulties and shortcomings.
