Book The Great War in Verse and Prose

Download or read book The Great War in Verse and Prose written by J E Wetherell B a and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-08-12 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The selections contained in this book make up a sequence which records the history of the Great War from the stirring days of August, 1914, to the opening of the Peace Conference in January, 1919. These selections of verse and prose are arranged, not necessarily in chronological order, but still with a view to indicate approximately the historic succession of great events and the varying moods of those authors and speakers who have been the voices of the allied nations during the fifty-two months of warfare. Although this anthology has been prepared for the use of schools, the plan of selection and arrangement has made it impracticable to grade the poems and extracts to suit the capacities of pupils of different ages. The judgment of the teacher must determine what is suitable for one grade and what for another. Many of the poems and some of the prose extracts will be found too difficult for young pupils. Due acknowledgments have been made throughout the book to the authors and publishers who have generously made it possible to bring together so valuable a collection of the literature of the War. The meed of gratitude due to all the writers represented here can never be adequately paid. Special mention is made of Nizamat Jung, Native Judge of the High Court of Hyderabad, who has given expression to the wonderful loyalty of the races of teeming India, which have poured out treasure and blood without stint in defence of their Emperor-King. A sufficient number of copies of this book should be kept in all school libraries; and it is suggested that the poems and prose extracts should be used in the reading classes, as often as is expedient, instead of the authorized Readers.

Book War Aims Peace Ideals

Download or read book War Aims Peace Ideals written by Tucker Brooke and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Aims Peace Ideals: Selections in Prose Verse Much by way of famous name or well-remembered passage has necessarily been omitted; but we have striven to make probable that, at least by implication or reference, all important ideas should find a place. The order chosen for the arrangement of material, with the spokesmen of Germany first and those of America last, roughly corresponds with the chronological sequence whereby these sets of ideals were translated into action and became important for the world. It is therefore primarily as a book of the literature of the war that we offer this volume, a literature of ideas and emotions, sometimes rising to greatness, sometimes valuable only for the burden of disastrous opinion, but always interesting to the student of human nature and the philosophy of war. Better than any reasoned explanation this collection presents the struggle of 1914-1918, for in quite as real a sense as the clash of armies or the political acts of states, the conflict of ideals here included is the very essence of the war itself. Book The Nation s Cause

Download or read book The Nation s Cause written by Elizabeth A. Marsland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we approach the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, this timely reissue, first published in 1991, evaluates the function of poetry in wartime Europe, arguing that war poetry must be understood as a social as well as a literary phenomenon. As well as locating the work of well-known French, English and German war poets in a European context, Elizabeth Marsland discusses lesser-known poetry of the war years, including poems by women and the neglected tradition of civilian protest through poetry. Identifying shared characteristics as well as the unique features of each nation’s poetry, The Nation’s Cause affords new insight into the relationship between nationalism and the social attitudes that determined the conduct of war.
