Book The Green Ray le Rayon Vert

Download or read book The Green Ray le Rayon Vert written by Jules Verne and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heroes are trying to observe the green ray in Scotland. After numerous unsuccessful tries caused by clouds, flocks of birds or distant boat sails hiding the sun, the phenomenon is eventually visible, but the heroes, finding love in each other's eyes, don't pay attention to the horizon. Scientific basis Green flashes and green rays are rare optical phenomena that occur shortly after sunset or before sunrise, when a green spot is visible for a short period of time above the sun, or a green ray shoots up from the sunset point. It is usually observed from a low altitude where there is an unobstructed view of the horizon, such as on the ocean. The idea in the novel that one can predict where and when to observe the green ray has no scientific basis. However, they are regularly sighted by airplane pilots because they often can see the true horizon in mid flight, more often when flying west because the sun's relative motion is slightly slower.

Book excerpt: This new edition of The Green Ray brings the rarely available title by the famous French author Jules Verne to a new generation. The mysterious scientific phenomenon of the green ray is unpredictable and elusive. When Helena hears of its apparent mystical effects on the mind and soul she enlists her uncles and two very different suitors, one artist and one amateur scientist, to find it. They travel to Scotland to seek to catch a glimpse of green rays which shoot out from the sunset. Their numerous attempts are always unsuccessful, thwarted by clouds or boats blocking the sun, until finally the phenomenon is visible, but they are no longer watching the horizon. BACK COVER The ray has the virtue of meaning that anyone who has seen it can no longer make a mistake in matters of sentiment; its appearance destroys illusions and lies. When a newspaper article tells Helena Campbell, whose impending arrange marriage is less than a love match, that seeing the green ray is an indication of true love, she refuses to marry anyone until she has seen it. Her quest to find the green ray takes her on an island-hopping tour of the Hebrides that nearly costs her her life, and Helena must ask herself - is seeing the green ray worth it? With which of her suitors will Helena see the ray? Or will she never see it at all? The Green Ray has all the hallmarks of a Verne classic - danger, romance, and of course a tale of marvellous adventure. Karen Loukes' new translatioj of Jules Verne's 'lost' Scottish novel recaptures the spirit of the original French text.

Book excerpt: Most of the marvels or impossibilities in here are to be found in the picture there presented to us of Scottish names, manners and costumes. It will hardly be denied that such a Scotch family name as Ursiclos, and such clans as the clan McDouglas and the clan Melville, are sufficiently impossible; nor can it be counted as anything less than a marvel for a lowland gentleman's butler to wait at dinner and perform all his other duties clad in the 'garb of old Gaul!' But these and innumerable errors of the same kind are all due, apparently, to a fixed idea on the part of M. Verne that all Scotchmen are Highlanders. The story is a perfect setting for the admirable descriptions of Scotch scenery which are the best feature in the book.

Book Vatnasafn Library of Water

Download or read book Vatnasafn Library of Water written by Roni Horn and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2009 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sited in a converted library building on a promontory overlooking the ocean in the town of Stykkishlmur on the west coast of Iceland, VATNASAFN / LIBRARY OF WATER incorporates many of Roni Horn's abiding artistic concerns with water and weather, reflection and illumination, and the fluid nature of identity. Twenty-four glass columns containing water from glaciers around Iceland refract and reflect the day into a rubber floor embedded with words used to describe weather, inside or out. VATNASAFN / LIBRARY OF WATER also offers a space for community gatherings, a studio for writers, and it houses an oral archive of weather reports gathered from people who live in and around Stykkishlmur. This book surveys the interconnecting elements of Roni Horn's long-term project on the island through a series of image sequences and texts. It also includes a selection of writings by the artist inspired by her experience of being in Iceland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jules Verne's reputation undergoes a much-needed rehabilitation in the hands of Timothy Unwin, who reexamines the author's work, from his earliest writings to his later and only recently discovered manuscripts. Verne was, Unwin argues, a master of the self-conscious novel, his work a pastiche of science discourse, fictional and non-fictional writings, and flamboyant, theatrical narrative. Unwin makes a compelling case for Verne as a master of the nineteenth-century experimental novel, in the company of Gustave Flaubert and other canonical French writers. The text will be a wonderful addition to the shelves of those interested in science fiction, experimental writing, and critical theory.
