Book excerpt: This is the first in-depth historical study of feminist activism against domestic violence in divided Berlin between 1968 and 2002. Starting in the 1970s, feminists in West and then East Berlin campaigned against domestic violence as a key issue of women's inequality. They exposed the harmful gender norms that left women unprotected and vulnerable to abuse in the home and called for this to change. Indeed, domestic violence has been one of the issues most effectively addressed by the women's movement in Germany. Since the first shelter opened in West Berlin in 1976, women's shelters have spread throughout the country, and today up to 45,000 women a year turn to emergency housing in Germany, with many more accessing helplines and crisis centres. Situating domestic violence activism within a broader history of feminism in post-war Germany, Feminist Transformations traces the evolution of this movement both across political division and reunification and from grassroots campaign to established, professionalised social service. In doing so, it brings the histories of feminism in East and West Berlin together for the first time and explores how feminism successfully changed women's rights in Germany. But it also asks what popular and political support for domestic violence activism has meant for feminism and the advancement of women's rights more broadly. Examining the trajectory of feminism in Germany, Jane Freeland reveals the limitations of gender equality as advancements in women's rights were often built on the reassertion of patriarchal gender roles.

So long as things continue as before, or at least as they were expected to, there arise no new problems requiring a decision, no need to form a plan. " (Hayek, 1945, p. 523) This book is based on my research for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy which I received from Lancaster University, England in the second half of 1997. It is an analysis of the structural transformation of the economic system in East Germany and the behavioural relations these changes imply. The approach of institutionalised transformation (not the least by the creation of the Treuhandanstalt) is examined with a theory-based framework which is derived from system-theoretical, evolutionary and constitutional-ethical considerations as well as from the newly developed adjustment model which has been constructed as a dynamic transformation approach. A relationship between norm changes, the new institutional framework of the economic system and the compatibility of the latter with changes of the remaining partial societal systems is recognised. Rigidity factors in the system's flexibility to react as well as the adjustment of economic behaviour to structural changes are analysed. The "marginal product of system change" is defined (section 2. 8. 2).

Book excerpt: The Basic Treaty between the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) for the first time provided a framework for the exchange of permanent missions and laid the foundation for expanded bilateral cooperation between the two German states. This book charts the progress of inner-German relations in the formative years of the 1970’s and explains how the revival of the German question in the l980's followed from striking changes in East and West German priorities and policies. Dr. Plock assesses the degree of practical cooperation in such areas as trade, travel, and the exchange of media representatives and also identifies the impact of Soviet interests on the inner-German relationship. Dr. Plock notes that despite a clear upgrading in FRG-GDR relations under Chancellors Willy Brandt and Helmut Schmidt, inner-German progress continues to be hostage to the overall East-West political and security climate. Yet the author sees a bipartisan West German commitment to partnership with the GDR as well as East Berlin's pragmatic approach to the relationship as stabilizing features of the European political landscape, even though the goals of future "Deutschlandpolitik" will continue to remain ill-defined.

Book excerpt: No example demonstrates the fluidity of the past within the German Democratic Republic more powerfully than the history of the Prussian state. Initially attacked in East German official histories as the historical engine of German militarism and reaction, Prussia underwent a remarkabletransformation in official and public memory from around the end of the 1970s. This was the so-called 'Prussia-Renaissance', in which, for the first time, the East German state began to recognise and even celebrate figures from Prussian history who had not served a 'progressive' agenda. But the'Prussia-Renaissance' was also a political and cultural phenomenon with a wide public resonance. The 'Prussia-Renaissance' may have been a relatively short-lived phenomenon, but it evidently opened a deep vein in the historical memory of the German Democratic Republic that defied reduction to 'highpolitics' alone. This book asks why.Using the case study of Prussia, Marcus Colla presents a multi-perspective approach to the way that a distinctive 'historical culture' was constructed in the German Democratic Republic.
