Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Verdicts of History Reviewed The substance of this volume, though subjected to revision and re-arrangement, consists of a selection from biographical and historical contributions to monthly and quarterly reviews. Latest in order of composition are the studies of Franklin and Cobbett, and some notes, incorporated in the present introductory chapter, on Mr. Lecky's History of England in the Eighteenth Century, ' which I am permitted to reprint, the first two from the Edinburgh Review, and the third from the Nineteenth Century. The essays on New England and Virginia, which were written before the War of Secession, together with others as early in date, far instance, those on St. John and Pulteney, appeared in the Christian Remem brancer and the North British Review, quarterly publications long since discontinued. The antiquity of much of the con tents of the book will explain and must excuse the absence of reference to the labours in the same fields of others whom I have had the misfortune to precede by many years. Book General Grant and the Verdict of History

Download or read book General Grant and the Verdict of History written by Frank P Varney and published by Savas Beatie. This book was released on 2023-03-10 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Ulysses S. Grant is best remembered today as a war-winning general, and he certainly deserves credit for his efforts on behalf of the Union. But has he received too much credit at the expense of other men? Have others who fought the war with him suffered unfairly at his hands? General Grant and the Verdict of History: Memoir, Memory, and the Civil War explores these issues. Professor Frank P. Varney examines Grant’s relationship with three noted Civil War generals: the brash and uncompromising “Fighting Joe” Hooker; George H. Thomas, the stellar commander who earned the sobriquet “Rock of Chickamauga”; and Gouverneur Kemble Warren, who served honorably and well in every major action of the Army of the Potomac before being relieved less than two weeks before Appomattox, and only after he had played a prominent part in the major Union victory at Five Forks. In his earlier book General Grant and the Rewriting of History, Dr. Varney studied the tempestuous relationship between Grant and Union General William S. Rosecrans. During the war, Rosecrans was considered by many of his contemporaries to be on par with Grant himself; today, he is largely forgotten. Rosecrans’s star dimmed, argues Varney, because Grant orchestrated the effort. Unbeknownst to most students of the war, Grant used his official reports, interviews with the press, and his memoirs to influence how future generations would remember the war and his part in it. Aided greatly by his two terms as president, by the clarity and eloquence of his memoirs, and in particular by the dramatic backdrop against which those memoirs were written, our historical memory has been influenced to a degree greater than many realize. It is beyond time to return to the original sources—the letters, journals, reports, and memoirs of other witnesses and the transcripts of courts-martial— to examine Grant’s story from a fresh perspective. The results are enlightening and more than a little disturbing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Origins of the English Jury. Originally published: Jersey City: Frederick D. Linn, [1875]. x, 388 pp. First published in England in 1852, Forsyth's History of Trial by Jury is the first full-scale historical account of the rise and growth of the jury system in England. Highly regarded, this book went through 37 editions. The first American edition, the source of this reprint, adds a number of notes and corrections to American references in previous editions. "An excellent summary of the opinions of leading legal writers as well as conventional historians regarding the origins of trial by jury was set forth by an Englishman, William Forsyth, in his excellent book entitled History of Trial by Jury. (. . .) Various writers, according to Forsyth, attribute the origin of the English jury to a recognition of the principle that no man ought to be condemned except by the voice of his fellow citizens. Forsyth committed himself to the belief that trial by jury did not owe its existence to any positive law, that it was not created by any Act of Parliament, but grew out of usages and customs of society that eventually passed away. Forsyth concluded his observations by saying that "the jury does not owe its existence to any preconceived theory of jurisprudence, but that it gradually grew out of forms previously in use and was composed of elements long familiar to the people in general." -- Robert H. White, 29 Tennessee Law Review 29 (1961-1962) 14 William Forsyth [1812-1899] was an English lawyer and author of many works on law and literature, including The History of Lawyers (1849).

Book excerpt: The arrest, trial and execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg in 1951 mesmerised an America coming to grips with the early Cold War and the anxiety aroused by the Soviet Union's testing of the atomic bomb. However, in 1965, Walter Schneir famously presented evidence that the Rosenbergs were innocent and had been framed by the FBI - a case which was brought into question in 1995 when the FBI released 3000 Soviet intelligence documents. This prompted Schneir to continue his research, which has lead to surprising and revelatory results.
