Book excerpt: Michael Dixon applies rhetorical theory to The Faerie Queene, highlighting the importance of rhetoric and locating the inventio, or organizing principle, of Spenser's epic narrative in the conception of justice. Book Time and History in Deleuze and Serres

Download or read book Time and History in Deleuze and Serres written by Bernd Herzogenrath and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Gilles Deleuze, time is 'out of joint'. For Michel Serres, it is 'a crumpled handkerchief'. In both of these concepts, explicit references are made to the non-linear dynamics of Chaos and Complexity theory, as well as the New Sciences. The groundbreaking work of these key thinkers has the potential to instigate a radical break from traditional existentialist theories of time and history, affording us the opportunity to view history and historical events as a complex, non-linear system of feedback-loops, couplings and interfaces. In this collection, the first to address the comparative historiographies of Deleuze and Serres, twelve leading experts - including William Connolly, Eugene Holland, Claire Colebrook and Elizabeth Grosz - examine these alternative concepts of time and history, exposing critical arguments in this important and emerging field of research.

Book Shakespeare and the Natural World

Download or read book Shakespeare and the Natural World written by Tom MacFaul and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-20 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the rich range of meanings that Shakespeare finds in the natural world, this book fuses ecocritical approaches to Renaissance literature with recent thinking about the significance of religion in Shakespeare's plays. MacFaul offers a clear introduction to some of the key problems in Renaissance natural philosophy and their relationship to Reformation theology, with individual chapters focusing on the role of animals in Shakespeare's universe, the representation of rural life, and the way in which humans' consumption of natural materials transforms their destinies. These discussions enable powerful new readings of Shakespeare's plays, including A Midsummer Night's Dream, As You Like It, King Lear, Macbeth, The Tempest, The Winter's Tale, and the history plays. Proposing that Shakespeare's representation of the relationship between man and nature anticipated that of the Romantics, this volume will interest scholars of Shakespeare studies, Renaissance drama and literature, and ecocritical studies of Shakespeare.

Book Medieval Venuses and Cupids

    Book Details:
  • Author : Theresa Tinkle
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 1996-06-01
  • ISBN : 0804764808
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book Medieval Venuses and Cupids written by Theresa Tinkle and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1996-06-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Venuses and Cupids analyses the transformations of the love deities in later Middle English Chaucerian poetry, academic Latin discourses on classical myth (including astrology, natural philosophy, and commentaries on classical Roman literature), and French conventions that associate Venus and Cupid with Ovidian arts of love. Whereas existing studies of Venus and Cupid contend that they always and everywhere represent two loves (good and evil), the author argues that medieval discourses actually promulgate diverse, multiple, and often contradictory meanings for the deities. The book establishes the range of meanings bestowed on the deities through the later Middle Ages, and draws on feminist and cultural theories to offer new models for interpreting both academic Latin discourses and vernacular poetry.

Book Questions of the Liminal in the Fiction of Julio Cortazar

Download or read book Questions of the Liminal in the Fiction of Julio Cortazar written by Domenic Moran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The great Argentinian writer Julio Cortazar (1914-84) was immersed in one of the most vibrant and revolutionary intellectual scenes of the last century, the Paris of the 1950s and 60s. Yet his often highly cerebral work has never received the close philosophical attention it deserves. Moran's book fills this critical lacuna. Rather than indiscriminately applying 'theory' to Cortazar, it aims to show that his work both engages with and often foreshadows many of the problems which were to become central to so-called poststructuralist philosophy and poetics. This study demonstrates that Cortazar remains enduringly, problematically modern."

Book Imagining Death in Spenser and Milton

Download or read book Imagining Death in Spenser and Milton written by E. Bellamy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-09-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagining Death in Spenser and Milton assembles a collection of essays on the compelling topic of death in two monumental representatives of the early modern canon, Edmund Spenser and John Milton. The volume draws its impetus from the conviction that death is a central, yet curiously understudied, preoccupation for Spenser and Milton, contending that death - in all its early modern reformations and deformations - is an indispensable backdrop for any attempt to articulate the relationship between Spenser and Milton.
