Book Ventricular Assist Devices in Advanced Stage Heart Failure

Download or read book Ventricular Assist Devices in Advanced Stage Heart Failure written by Shunei Kyo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-25 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on how ventricular assist devices (VADs) can help provide destination therapy for patients with terminal heart failure, one of the most serious diseases in the world today because of the tremendous number of patients, the high mortality rate, and the cost of care. One means of providing cardiological support for patients suffering from heart failure is with VADs, and more than 10,000 patients worldwide have now been implanted with these devices. Half of them already have lived more than one year, and 2,000 patients more than two years, after surgery. This improved survival means that we have reached a point where VADs can be used for destination therapy, not just for bridge-to-recovery or bridge-to-transplant. In view of the increasing number of patients with advanced-stage heart failure and the availability and longevity of transplanted hearts, VADs can solve many problems. In addition to providing information about the devices themselves, this book includes vital guidelines on long-term management and support of VAD-implanted patients’ everyday lives.

Book excerpt: It is with great pleasure that we here present Artificial Heart 4 (proceedings of the 4th international symposium on artificial heart and assist devices). The symposium was held in Tokyo, Japan, on August 7 and 8, 1992 under the patronage of Mr. Hiromitsu Yoshioka, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Tokyo Women's Medical College. Artificial heart 4 consists of the papers presented in nine sessions: Oral Presentations A to E, Forums 1 to 10, and nine lectures by invited guest speakers from the United States and Europe. In this volume, papers from two new sessions, sessions IV and VII, entitled New Approaches, were prepared for devices and systems developed according to new ideas. Twenty-one papers in these two sessions were presented in five Forums (3, 4, 7, 8, and 9). Session VI was provided to deal with heart transplantation, which is now closely related to both ventricular assist systems (VAS) and the total artificial heart (TAH). In this session, papers by two guest speakers from major heart transplantation centers in Europe were included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a great pleasure to have the opportunity to edit a new volume of "Assisted Circulation". In the past 5 years there have been many changes in the philosophy of assisted circulation. There have been a large number of clinical application- of left ventricular assist devices, biventricular assist devices, and total artificial hearts; one artificial heart was implanted electively in December, 1982, in a patient with an end-stage cardiomyopathy. A great deal of help is necessary in editing a book. I want especially to thank the Austrian Research Council and the University of Innsbruck for their support of my work. I am most grateful to my co-workers R. Schistek, I. Koller, J. Hager, and R. Nessler, and especially to my secretary, W. Kirchner, who had the most secretarial load ofthe editorial work. I would also like to thank Dr. J. Wieczorek, Mrs. M. Schafer, Mrs. M. Griindler, and the Springer staff who gave this second volume an attractive format and made it accurate as usual. It was with great sorrow that we learned of the sad death of Dr. Emery Nyilas in June 1984, who played a great part in the development of artificial hearts. I hope that this second volume will also raise new items for discussion, resulting in new concepts, so that the third volume can introduce new devices and report on more clinical applications.

Download or read book Artificial Heart 3 written by J.M. Anderson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium on Artificial Heart and Assist Devices has been held three times, first in 1985, then in 1987 and 1990. It is my great pleasure to present Artificial Heart 3 (Proceedings of the 3rd International Symposium on Artificial Heart and Assist Devices). The third symposium was held in Tokyo on February 16 and 17, 1990. Our original intention was to invite all the principal investigators from the major artificial heart research laboratories in the world, in the first three symposia. The numbers of investigators in the fields of the artificial heart, ventricular assist systems, and biomaterials, invited for the symposia, totalled 7 in 1985, 8 in 1987, and 13 in 1990. The program of the third symposium consisted of 41 papers; 13 invited lectures, 8 papers contributed upon request, with 2 from the United States, and 20 regular selected papers including 2 from the United States, ana 1 each from Australia, Germany, and South Korea. During the last three years, the state of clinical application of artificial hearts and assist devices has changed. In the case of pneumatically driven blood pumps, we have now stepped into the age of practical use in patients. Accordingly, in this symposium we gave a special emphasis to topics of clinical application, particularly the use of an artificial heart as a bridge to heart transplantation. Sessions on implantable artificial hearts, biomaterials for the artificial heart, and heart transplantation were also included.

Book Mechanical Circulatory Support in End Stage Heart Failure

Download or read book Mechanical Circulatory Support in End Stage Heart Failure written by Andrea Montalto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a detailed practical guide to the use of ventricular assist devices and total artificial hearts to provide mechanical circulatory support (MCS) in patients with end-stage heart failure. It explains why MCS may be indicated, which patients require MCS, when and how to implant ventricular assist devices or a total artificial heart, and how to avoid potential complications of MCS. Management throughout the period of care is described, from preimplantation to follow-up, and both typical and atypical cases are discussed. The text features numerous helpful tips and tricks relating to surgical and nonsurgical management and is supported by a wealth of high-quality illustrations that document the preoperative evaluation and implantation techniques. Heart transplantation remains the gold standard for the treatment of patients suffering from end-stage heart failure, but the shortage of donors has led to an increase in the use of MCS. This book will assist all physicians, and especially cardiologists and anesthesiologists, who are involved in the care of these patients.
