Download or read book Humanism Venice and Women written by Margaret L. King and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published between 1975 and 2003, the essays included in Humanism, Venice, and Women reflect Margaret L. King's distinct but interlocking scholarly interests: humanism and Venice; women and humanism; and women of the Italian Renaissance. The first part focuses on defining the key characteristics of Venetian as opposed to other Italian humanisms, with an analysis of Gramscian theory about the historical role of intellectuals as an aid to understanding humanism in Venice, followed by essays on three Venetian humanists who wrote about family relationships (or the need to avoid them). The third section introduces the major Renaissance women humanists and analyzes the relation of their work to that of male humanists, along with an essay on Renaissance mothers of sons, in Italy and beyond. Crossing boundaries of region and gender, and the subdisciplines of intellectual and social history, these essays are provocative in themselves while demonstrating how shifting historiographical contexts encourage scholars to view the historical record in new and fruitful ways.

Book Venice s Intimate Empire

  • Author : Erin Maglaque
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2018-06-15
  • ISBN : 1501721674
  • Pages : 166 pages

Download or read book Venice s Intimate Empire written by Erin Maglaque and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining private writings and humanist texts, Erin Maglaque explores the lives and careers of two Venetian noblemen, Giovanni Bembo and Pietro Coppo, who were appointed as colonial administrators and governors. In Venice’s Intimate Empire, she uses these two men and their families to showcase the relationship between humanism, empire, and family in the Venetian Mediterranean. Maglaque elaborates an intellectual history of Venice’s Mediterranean empire by examining how Venetian humanist education related to the task of governing. Taking that relationship as her cue, Maglaque unearths an intimate view of the emotions and subjectivities of imperial governors. In their writings, it was the affective relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, humanist teachers and their students that were the crucible for self-definition and political decision making. Venice’s Intimate Empire thus illuminates the experience of imperial governance by drawing connections between humanist education and family affairs. From marriage and reproduction to childhood and adolescence, we see how intimate life was central to the Bembo and Coppo families’ experience of empire. Maglaque skillfully argues that it was within the intimate family that Venetians’ relationships to empire—its politics, its shifting social structures, its metropolitan and colonial cultures—were determined.

Book Jewish Poet and Intellectual in Seventeenth Century Venice

Download or read book Jewish Poet and Intellectual in Seventeenth Century Venice written by Sarra Copia Sulam and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-11-15 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Jewish woman to leave her mark as a writer and intellectual, Sarra Copia Sulam (1600?–41) was doubly tainted in the eyes of early modern society by her religion and her gender. This remarkable woman, who until now has been relatively neglected by modern scholarship, was a unique figure in Italian cultural life, opening her home, in the Venetian ghetto, to Jews and Christians alike as a literary salon. For this bilingual edition, Don Harrán has collected all of Sulam’s previously scattered writings—letters, sonnets, a Manifesto—into a single volume. Harrán has also assembled all extant correspondence and poetry that was addressed to Sulam, as well as all known contemporary references to her, making them available to Anglophone readers for the first time. Featuring rich biographical and historical notes that place Sulam in her cultural context, this volume will provide readers with insight into the thought and creativity of a woman who dared to express herself in the male-dominated, overwhelmingly Catholic Venice of her time.

Book From Milano to New York by Way of Hell

Download or read book From Milano to New York by Way of Hell written by Giulio L. Cantoni and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a young Italian Jew who in 1938 in response to the enactment by the Fascist government of antisemitic legislation decided that he should leave his comfortable home in Milano with his mother and sister and seek refuge first in England and later in the United States. However, as the result of Italy's entry in the war, he faced unexpected obstacles and real dangers. On June 11, 1940 when he was ready to board the Britannic and sail to New York from Liverpool, he was arrested as an enemy alien. A few days laer he was shipped behind barbed wire across the Atlantic, then infested with German U boats, interned in Canada for fourteen months as a prisoner of war. Eventually his status as a "refugee" was recognized by the British Government but legal technicalities prevented his immigration to the US from Canada and imposed a detour to Cuba. Finally after a long wait and with the sponsorship of Arturo Toscanini he was able to rejoin his mother and sister in New York just a few days before Pearl Harbor. Giulio L. Cantoni, an internationally known biochemist, has served for forty years as Laboratory Chief at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. He has published more than 150 papers and is a co-author of several scientific books. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Italian Academy of Science. In 1968 he founded and now directs the FAES Chamber of Music Concert Series at NIH, generally regarded as the best in the Washington area. He lives in Bethesda with his wife of 35 years.

Download or read book Meltzer in Venice written by Hugo Marquez and published by Phoenix Publishing House. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on adolescence and adolescent states of mind. It is one of a series that record Donald Meltzer's clinical seminars and supervisions, which were conducted in various countries on a regular basis over many years. Despite his interest in the theoretical advances of psychoanalysis made during what he termed The Kleinian Development, Meltzer believed that clinical supervision was the only way to teach psychoanalytic practice. In effect he treated supervision as an art form just as he regarded psychoanalysis as an art form. The library of his supervision work, almost all recorded outside the UK, thus forms a valuable teaching model for future practitioners, as well as demonstrating Meltzer's wealth of insight into both character development and analytic technique.

Book Women Sex and Marriage in Early Modern Venice

Download or read book Women Sex and Marriage in Early Modern Venice written by Daniela Hacke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women, Sex, and Marriage in Early Modern Venice is the first study to investigate systematically the moral policies of both Church and State in the age of Counter-Reformation confessionalisation in Venice. Examining ecclesiastical and civil lawsuits related to illicit sex, broken marriage promises and disrupted marriages of artisan and ordinary women and men, Daniela Hacke can convincingly show how central sexual morality was to the patriarchal society of sixteenth and seventeenth century Venice. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, the author skilfully reconstructs what gender difference meant in daily life, in courtship rituals, marital disputes, and in sexual relations. In the streets and in the courts, women and men fought not only over proper gender behaviour within and outside marriage, but also about the meaning of conjugality and of domestic patriarchy. Neighbours played an active role in mediating between distressed partners and between children and parents. Their interventions and perceptions reveal much about the moral values and the networks of support within a fascinatingly heterogeneous community such as early modern Venice. The study makes important contributions to the fields of gender history, social history and the history of crime and sexuality.

Book Marriage the Church and its Judges in Renaissance Venice 1420 1545

Download or read book Marriage the Church and its Judges in Renaissance Venice 1420 1545 written by Cecilia Cristellon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the actions of marriage tribunals by analyzing the richest source of marriage suits extant in Italy, those of the Venetian ecclesiastical tribunal, between 1420 and the opening of the Council of Trent. It offers a strongly representative overview of the changes the Council introduced to centuries-old marriage practices, relegating it to the realm of marginality and deviance and nearly erasing the memory of it altogether. From the eleventh century onward, the Church assured itself of a jurisdictional monopoly over the matter of marriage, operating both in concert and in conflict with secular authorities by virtue of marriage’s civil consequences, the first of which regarded the legitimacy of children. Secular tribunals were responsible for patrimonial matters between spouses, though the Church at times inserted itself into these matters either directly, by substituting itself for the secular authority, or indirectly, by influencing Rulings through their own sentences. Lay magistratures, for their part, somewhat eroded the authority of ecclesiastical tribunals by continuing to exercise autonomous jurisdiction over marriage, especially regarding separation and crimes strictly connected to the nuptial bond and its definition, including adultery, bigamy, and rape.
