Book excerpt: Dear Charlie was what was written on plain paper in ink stain bouts. Oh, why would a friend leave without a goodbye, his mind ached aloud. Where the waves crashed no more and over the walls of a mansion, vines grew and rabbits skittered on acres of green. Charlie became ill and all he knew was the words the walls caterwauled. Clocks ticking, Marco skipping, Hayley scampered far away, his family was there to help him through his bitter blue dingy, lonely days. Oh what a rigmarole is this sort of a tale!

Book excerpt: The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams Bianco Merry Christmas! A child receives a special gift in his stocking: a velvet rabbit. (Much better than coal.) At first he's excited about the little stuffed animal, but then the toy goes into the toy box with all his other toys. The Velveteen Rabbit is nice with it though. Most of the toys in the nursery don't talk to him, but wise old Skin Horse tells him all about what it's like to be True. You see, when a child has loved you for a long time and plays with you and wears you out, then you become Real. The Rabbit isn't quite sure about the whole "wear and tear" part, but someday he'd really like to be Royal. #ToyGoals One night, Nana, the kindergarten manager, gives the boy the velvet rabbit to sleep with. After that, the boy and the rabbit become best friends. The Rabbit's fur is starting to wear out and his seams are peeling from too much love, but he doesn't care. One day, the boy tells Nana that his rabbit is not a toy, it is real. The rabbit is super excited. He has finally achieved Real status. Way to keep it 100, Rabbit. In the summer, the Velveteen Rabbit is playing outside with the Boy when a group of wild rabbits approaches him. They want to play with him, but the Rabbit can't move because he's just a stuffed animal. Eventually the rabbits realize that the Velveteen Rabbit is not a wild rabbit like them and run away. This almost breaks poor Rabbit's little heart. It's ours. Eventually, the boy falls ill with scarlet fever. The rabbit stays in bed with him until he recovers. But the day before the Boy is supposed to leave for the sea, the Rabbit feels he needs to be burned. Apparently he's covered in germs. So this whole thing about being real didn't work out so well for the rabbit. He sits in the toy bag waiting to be thrown into a bonfire and cries. From his one true tear a flower fairy grows. This fairy tells the rabbit that she was already real for the boy, but now she will make it real for everyone. Point. The fairy brings the velvet rabbit to a group of wild rabbits in the woods and tells them to watch out for her friend. She then she gives him a kiss and he leaves and jumps with the other wild rabbits. Later, the boy is out playing in the woods near his home and runs into some wild rabbits. One looks super familiar. He reminds him of a rabbit he had before he got sick. Of course we know that he is the Velveteen Rabbit and that he has returned to find his special friend who helped him become real.

Book excerpt: In this sequel to Rabbit, Run, John Updike resumes the spiritual quest of his anxious Everyman, Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom. Ten years have passed; the impulsive former athlete has become a paunchy thirty-six-year-old conservative, and Eisenhower’s becalmed America has become 1969’s lurid turmoil of technology, fantasy, drugs, and violence. Rabbit is abandoned by his family, his home invaded by a runaway and a radical, his past reduced to a ruined inner landscape; still he clings to semblances of decency and responsibility, and yearns to belong and to believe.

Book excerpt: When we first met him in Rabbit, Run (1960), the book that established John Updike as a major novelist, Harry (Rabbit) Angstrom is playing basketball with some boys in an alley in Pennsylvania during the tail end of the Eisenhower era, reliving for a moment his past as a star high school athlete. Athleticism of a different sort is on display throughout these four magnificent novels—the athleticism of an imagination possessed of the ability to lay bare, with a seemingly effortless animal grace, the enchantments and disenchantments of life. Updike revisited his hero toward the end of each of the following decades in the second half of this American century; and in each of the subsequent novels, as Rabbit, his wife, Janice, his son, Nelson, and the people around them grow, these characters take on the lineaments of our common existence. In prose that is one of the glories of contemporary literature, Updike has chronicled the frustrations and ambiguous triumphs, the longuers, the loves and frenzies, the betrayals and reconciliations of our era. He has given us our representative American story. This Rabbit Angstrom volume is composed of the following novels: Rabbit, Run; Rabbit Redux; Rabbit is Rich; and Rabbit at Rest.

When Jeff Conant, the new executive director of San Francisco's Frameline Film Festival, takes a header off the Golden Gate Bridge, he is considered just another statisticÑone of the thousands who've leapt from the landmark to commit suicide. But Jeff was also a childhood friend of reporter Velvet Erickson, who refuses to accept the coroner's ruling. Although unconvinced, Yoshi Yakamota reluctantly agrees to investigate Jeff's death. Diving into the victim's life, the Blind Eye Detective Agency uncovers potential suspects, but no real indications of murder. What did happen on the Golden Gate Bridge that night? Did an independent filmmaker inadvertently capture the event on camera? When a Blind Eye team member is attacked, it becomes painfully clear that someone has a secret worth killing forÑand with Yoshi dangerously close to exposing it, they may strike again.

Book excerpt: People Magazine Book of the Week A Best Book of the Year at Kirkus Reviews, Book Riot, The Chicago Review of Books, Minnesota Public Radio, and more An Indies Introduce and Indie Next Pick Fans of Maria Semple's Where'd You Go Bernadette and and Kevin Wilson's The Family Fang will delight in Annie Hartnett's debut, a darkly comic novel about a young girl named Elvis trying to figure out her place in a world without her mother. Elvis Babbitt has a head for the facts: she knows science proves yellow is the happiest color, she knows a healthy male giraffe weighs about 3,000 pounds, and she knows that the naked mole rat is the longest living rodent. She knows she should plan to grieve her mother, who has recently drowned while sleepwalking, for exactly eighteen months. But there are things Elvis doesn’t yet know—like how to keep her sister Lizzie from poisoning herself while sleep-eating or why her father has started wearing her mother's silk bathrobe around the house. Elvis investigates the strange circumstances of her mother's death and finds comfort, if not answers, in the people (and animals) of Freedom, Alabama. As hilarious a storyteller as she is heartbreakingly honest, Elvis is a truly original voice in this exploration of grief, family, and the endurance of humor after loss.

Book Going This Way

Download or read book Going This Way written by Diane Elizabeth Yates and published by WestBowPress. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many words that could be used to describe Charlie Yates. He was funny, talented, driven, generous, friendly, loving, dependable, trustworthy, courageous, and sometimes annoying and aggravating. When he came into this world, he was but a lump of clay in the Potters hands. Through the years, God kneaded, rolled, turned, shaped, tested, and fired the vessel that became His faithful servant. The stories about Charlie are legend in his circles of influence. He was an aviator, a veteran, a husband, father, teacher, friend, and a child of God. The young sinner and the older, wiser, forgiven sinner lived, created, told, and retold stories. He verbally recounted his stories with great energy and animation, and he also shared them through movies, pictures, and books. The stories were of his adventures, mishaps, jokes, near-death experiences, joys, sorrows, struggles, and battles. After he died, people who knew him wanted to hear more. In this book are some of the stories that reveal the character and transformation of a gifted, yet ordinary, person whom God used for His purposes and His glory.
