Book excerpt: Based on the autobiography of Sarah Winnemucca, a Nevadan Paiute of the 19th century Silver Rush era, this historical work of fiction vividly reenacts events of Sarah’s life, highlighting the slaughter of twenty-three members of her tribe by a U.S. cavalry. The deaths of two dear sisters in the massacre are the pivotal event that transforms Sarah into a fiery advocate for the Paiutes’ right to their land and preservation of their ancient culture. Download or read book THE RENT VEIL written by Horatius Bonar and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-12-02 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was no veil in Paradise between man and God. There were three places or regions; the outer earth, Eden, and "the Garden of Eden," or Paradise; but there was no veil nor fence between, hindering access from the one to the other. There was nothing to prevent man from going in to speak with God, or God from coming out to speak with man. It was not till after man had disobeyed that the veil was let down which separated God from man, which made a distinction between the dwellings of man and the habitation of God. Before God had spoken or done aught in the way of separation, man betrayed his consciousness of his new standing, and of the necessity for a covering or screen. He fled from God into the thick trees of the garden, that their foliage might hide him from God and God from him. In so doing he showed that he felt two things, -First, that there must be a veil between him and God; Second, that now, in his altered position, distance from God (if such a thing could be) was his safety.

Book Between Warrior Brother and Veiled Sister

Download or read book Between Warrior Brother and Veiled Sister written by Minoo Moallem and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005-07-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minoo Moallem challenges the mainstream stereotypical representation of Islam and Muslims as backward, fanatical, and premodern by showing how Islamic nationalism and fundamentalism are by-products of modernity. Writing with a deep personal and scholarly concern for recent Iranian history, Moallem refers to the gendered notions of brother and sister as keys to understanding the invention of the Islamic ummat as a modern fraternal community. Using magazines, novels, and films, she offers a feminist transnational analysis of contemporary Iranian culture that questions dominant binaries of modern and traditional, West and East, secular and religious, and civilized and barbaric. Between Warrior Brother and Veiled Sister responds to a number of important questions raised in connection with 9/11. The author considers how veiling intersects with other identity markers in nation-state building and modern formations of gendered citizenship. She shows how Islamic nationalism and fundamentalism are fed by a hybrid blend of images and myths of both pre-Islamic and Islamic Iran, as well as globally circulated patriarchal ideologies.

Book The Blue Island

Download or read book The Blue Island written by William T. Stead and published by . This book was released on 2013-08-25 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains four classic spiritualist works, three by W. T. Stead and one by his daughter, Estelle. William T. Stead (1849-1912) was a well-known British investigative journalist who became interested in Spiritualism in the 1890s. In 1892, through the gift of automatic writing, he began receiving spirit communications from the recently deceased American temperance reformer and newspaperwoman Julia T. Ames, describing conditions in the next world. He published her messages in Borderland, the spiritualist quarterly he founded in 1893, and later in book form under the title After Death, or Letters From Julia. In 1909, following Julia's suggestions from beyond, Stead established Julia's Bureau in London, where inquirers could obtain information about the spirit world from a group of resident mediums. During this time he wrote his personal account, How I Know that the Dead Return. On April 10, 1912, Stead boarded the S.S. Titanic bound from Southampton to New York, to take part in a peace congress at Carnegie Hall. On the morning of April 15 the ship struck an iceberg and Stead, along with hundreds of others, drowned. At that time his daughter, Estelle, an actress and also a spiritualist, was on tour with her own Shakespearean company. Amongst its members was a psychically gifted man named Pardoe Woodman, who foretold the disaster as they sat talking after tea. Through Woodman's clairvoyant powers W. T. Stead was able to communicate the messages contained in The Blue Island, "experiences of a new arrival beyond the veil." Estelle Stead carried on her father's work after his death. In When We Speak with the Dead she explained the possibilities and limitations of communication as viewed from her own experience, which included messages from her father "across the border."
