The following concepts related to automated highway systems (AHS) and intelligent vehicles (IV) were investigated: 1) the use of a hierarchical control structure requiring less frequent and less spatially dense communication between a traffic operations center and the vehicles, and requiring less computational effort for lateral and longitudinal control of the vehicle on the highway; 2) the use of less expensive sensor technology for establishing vehicle position and implementing feedback control.
