Book Vegvisir Viking Compass and Kristi Kors A Tale of Rescue

Download or read book Vegvisir Viking Compass and Kristi Kors A Tale of Rescue written by William Van Zyl and published by Five House Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-29 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever found yourself in a life-or-death situation? Have you stood at a crossroads in your life, unsure of which path to take? Do you battle with despondency and mental health challenges? Has a grim health diagnosis left you reeling? Perhaps you've had to make a significant sacrifice? The Vikings possessed a remarkable symbol known as the Runic Cross, a variation of the Vegvisir, resembling a compass. This emblem served as a source of guidance and protection, intricately etched onto stones or rings, transforming it into a potent talisman. The Vegvisir, also called the runic compass or the Viking compass/Nordic compass, incorporated eight Viking rune staves, symbolising both protection and guidance. Vikings are believed to have relied on this unique symbol as a compass during their journeys. In Iceland, "vegvisir" translates to 'Wayfinder' and 'Signpost.' Also, I'd like to touch upon the Viking Sunstone, a practical navigation tool that indicated the sun's location when it was obscured from view, offering invaluable assistance to seafarers. My fascination with all things Viking leads me to draw intriguing comparisons between the Vegvisir and the Cross, adding an element of fun to the exploration.

Book Navigating Stormy Seas The Runic Compass Vegvisir as a Guiding Light

This book was released on 2023-11-04 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Call me Agnarok’. Let me tell you about that fateful day in the Winter of 1016. A primal tempest, a symphony of chaos, bellowed its fury upon the Viking longship, an ageing behemoth defiantly marked by the snarling dragon carved upon its bow. In their unrestrained wrath, the heavens flung bolts of lightning that violently shattered the abyss beneath, revealing a sea possessed by a maddened tumult. The ocean was fuming; its mouth frothing. Thunder rolls, lightning strikes, and the hammer flies across the sky. Somewhere on the violently unsteady ship, a Viking called to Thor.................... I have included the dramatic introduction to set the scene of a Viking ship in a tumultuous storm. The Viking seafarers were desperate to survive the elements. Did you recognise the similarity to the opening line of Herman Melville’s famous novel Moby Dick? ‘Call me Ishmael.’ (Moby Dick) The context of this article is the World of Vikings and navigation in life. Let’s look at the vegvisir in more detail. A true story: A work colleague of mine - who became a good friend over 2 years ago - was farewelled the other day (2023). He had recently tattooed a Norse name around his left forearm. Yes, you have guessed it: the Norse had an alphabet. This friend, let me call him Agnarok, has a passion for all things Viking and Norse. I made him a farewell card with a drawing of Runic Compass on the front and a couple of special words on the inside. Here are some of the words from the card. In Norwegian: Vi ønsker deg alt godt for fremtiden. *(godt = well) In English: We wish you all the very best for the future. This short eBook looks at the Viking's Runic compass - called a vegvisir - and navigation.

Book excerpt: The essays collected in Tattooed Bodies draw on a range of theoretical paradigms and empirical knowledge to investigate tattoos, tattooing, and our complex relations with marks on skin. Engaging with diverse disciplinary perspectives in art history, continental philosophy, media studies, psychoanalysis, critical theory, literary studies, biopolitics, and cultural anthropology, the volume reflects the sheer diversity of meanings attributed to tattoos throughout history and across cultures. Essays explore conceptualizations of tattoos and tattooing in Derrida, Deleuze and Guattari, Lacan, Agamben, and Jean-Luc Nancy, while utilizing theoretical perspectives to interpret tattoos in literary works by Melville, Beckett, Kafka, Genet, and Jeff VanderMeer, among others. Tattooed Bodies prompts readers to explore a few significant questions: Are tattoos unique phenomena or an art medium in need of special theoretical exploration? Book Icelandic Magic Aims Tools and Techniques of the Icelandic Sorcerers

Download or read book Icelandic Magic Aims Tools and Techniques of the Icelandic Sorcerers written by Christopher Alan Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unprecedented work, the author Christopher A. Smith has meticulously studied no less than 6 original Icelandic manuscripts dating from 1500 to 1860 to extract a picture of the aims, tools and techniques of Icelandic sorcerers. Set against the context of the harsh economic, social and environmental conditions of this North Atlantic island, the book gives a detailed account of the types of spells that were used and the motivations behind them. Hundreds of items from the six books of magic have been analysed to present the reader with a clear idea of the methods that were used, including incantation, invocation of deities and use of the enigmatic magical staves (galdrastafir). Furthermore, the book goes into great detail concerning the physical tools used by magicians and the kinds of objects that might have been found in a sorcerer's 'toolbox'. The book is illustrated throughout with images from the original manuscripts. Although it is not intended by any means as a book of instruction, one chapter does focus on workings of certain types and gives suggestions for those brave enough to try them out. All in all, this work will be an indispensable item for anyone interested in the history of magic in general and of Icelandic magic in particular.

Book Icelandic Magic

  • Author : Stephen E. Flowers
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster

  • ISBN : 1620554062
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Icelandic Magic written by Stephen E. Flowers and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical guide to the magical systems of pre-Christian Iceland • Reveals spells and workings drawn directly from surviving magical books from the 16th to 20th century preserved at the National Library in Reykjavík • Explores the history of magic in Iceland through original translations of Icelandic folktales about famous magicians and about legendary grimoires, such as the Galdrabók, the oldest and most complete book of its kind • Explains how to personalize the spells through the creation of unique signs and symbols based on the mythic names of Odin and Icelandic magical alphabets During the Christianization of Europe in the Middle Ages, many books of magic were lost as the ancient pagan traditions were suppressed. But in Iceland the practice of recording magical spells in books continued in secret for centuries, on a scale not seen elsewhere. Now housed in the National Library in Reykjavík, these surviving grimoires, which represent only a hundredth of what was lost, reveal a rich magical tradition that continued to evolve into the 20th century. Drawing directly from the actual surviving Icelandic books of magic, Stephen Flowers presents a complete system of magic based on Icelandic lore and magical practices from the 16th century onward. He explores the history of magic in Iceland in pagan and early Christian times and reveals specific practical techniques and ritual templates that readers can adapt to their unique purposes. Illustrating traditional Icelandic magical practices and the Icelanders’ attitudes toward them, he shares original translations of Icelandic folktales about famous magicians, such as the legend of Gray-Skin, and about legendary grimoires, such as the Galdrabók, the oldest and most complete book of its kind. After initiating the reader into the grammar and symbols of Icelandic magic through history and lore, Flowers then presents an extensive catalog of actual spells and magical workings from the historical Icelandic books of magic. These examples provide ready-made forms for practical experimentation as well as an exemplary guide on how to create signs and symbols for more personalized magical work. The author also includes guidance on creating unique magical signs from the 100 mythic names of Odin, which he translates and interprets magically, and from Icelandic magical alphabets, symbols that connect Icelandic magic to the ancient runic tradition.
