Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vegetation of the Bahama Islands In the hope of adding somewhat to our rather meager knowledge of these Islands, and of bringing into more accessible form the scattered observations of others, the Geographical Society of Baltimore, in the summer of 1903, organized an Expedition for the purpose of their exploration. I, with my two assistants, Mr. C. A. Shore and Mr. F. M. Hanes, was given charge of the botanical side, and this report is the result of observations and collections made during the voyage. As an apology for many deficiencies, I would call atten tion to the limited time at our disposal, and to the extreme difficulty of drying and preserving plants on the decks of a schooner generally exposed to a stifi breeze. Except in the town of Nassau, where we secured a working room for several days, the plants had to be brought to the boat and there pressed, labelled, and stowed away. On account of the salt air and frequent rains constant attention was necessary to prevent the decay of our specimens. Wherever possible notes were made on the spot, and it is from these that most of my descriptions are taken. A large part of our time was consumed in sailing from port to port, or rather from point to point, as there are few protected harbors in the Islands. Book Endemism in the Bahama Flora Classic Reprint

Download or read book Endemism in the Bahama Flora Classic Reprint written by Norman Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Endemism in the Bahama Flora Endemism on it, and in fact throughout the archipelago, appears to be the response of vegetation to these peculiar conditions of soil, lack of rainfall for a region only 70 miles from the rain-forest of northern Cuba and Haiti, regular and rather strong trade winds, punctuated by violent hurricanes in the opposite direction, and by certain other factors. In Inagua, more than anywhere else in the archipelago, the sum of these factors has produced endemic species. As has been shown, the distribution and growth form of these endemic species does not differ materially from the non endemic ones. The comparatively short time in which this endemic ora must have been developed, its method of transportal from island to island or from the mainland, these and other matters regarding the distribution of the Bahama endemics need further field study. Such a study should include Inagua for reasons that need not be repeated here. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The axis of the archipelago is in a general way northwest and southeast, with a total Length of over 600 miles; the greatest width, disregarding the islands of the outlying Cay Sal Bank, from Gun Cay to Man-of-War Cay, Abaco, is about 150 miles. The most northern cays of the Little Bahama Bank north of the Great Bahama Island are in north latitude about 27° 30' ;the southern side of Great Inagua is in north latitude about 20° 55'. Gun Cay is in west longitude about 79° 20'; cays of the Turks Islands are in west longitude about 71° 10'. The many islands and cays stand on banks, in shallow water, with oceanic depths among and between them. The region has, doubtless, been subjected to alternate periods of uplift and depression in past geologic time, but the vertical movements have probably been relatively small; during times of uplift, some of the present islands may have been connected, but there is no evidence that there ever was land connection with either Florida, Cuba or Hispaniola. Most of the islands are low, but hilly and rocky, the ranges of hills usually running lengthwise of the island; on New Providence, the hills rise to about 100 feet elevation; on Cat Island, aneroid barometer readings indicated altitudes up to 205 feet (published records of greater elevations on Cat Island were not substantiated by our observations); on Watling's Island, hills rise to about 140 feet. Most of Andros, the Great Bahama and Abaco are low and nearly level. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
