Book excerpt: Veerashaiva philosophy and practices existed prior to the reformation by the twelfth century Philosophers. The present day Veerashaivas are the followers of the philosophy and practices put forward by those Philosophers. In the twelfth century of Common Era, religion itself had deteriorated into another means of exploitation, perpetuating social inequality and ignorance of spiritual truth. Basavanna plunged into a movement to reform Veerashaivism from within. His efforts were mostly oriented in two directions - religion and society - and perhaps towards a closer approximation of the two. He saw no difference between rich and poor, and between man and woman; he saw no difference among different castes; and he embedded this principle of equality among all in the religion. He established an academy called Anubhava Mantapa where a large number of philosophers, mystics, scholars and seekers coming from all parts of the Indian subcontinent, would gather to participate in learned discussions on the highest ends of life. The philosophy and practices of this new religious faith have been documented in the vachanas. The vachana literature of Basavanna and his contemporary philosophers is the basic scripture. In the 15th century Veerashaiva scholars systematically collected the retrievable portions of the vachana literature, and compiled some of these vachanas into the form of a scripture known as Shunya Sampadane. The discourses at the Anubhava Mantapa that are narrated in the Shunya Sampadane have been incorporated into some of the articles in this book. These discourses, I believe, will give finer details of the philosophical aspects of Veerashaivism. Also the articles in this book have been presented in some sort of an order - Scripture, Philosophy, Practice, and other aspects of Veerashaivism. This type of presentation of the updated concepts of Veerashaivism, I believe, will enhance readability of this book.

Vīraśaiva philosophy and practices existed prior to Basavaṇṇa's reformation of Vīraśaivism. There is a long prehistory of the evolution of Vīraśaivism. Philosophical thoughts and religious practices of Vīraśaivism are traceable to, as far back as, the Ṛgvēdic period. The Upaniṣads, dealing with knowledge (jñāna kānḍa), are the quintessence of the Vēdas. Vīraśaiva Philosophy and Vīraśaiva practices have evolved from what is in the Upaniṣads. This book reviews the timing of the composition of the sacred Hindu scriptures, and then describe the Vīraśaiva concepts in relation to these scriptures in order to better understand the ancient nature of the concepts of Vīraśaivism.

This book provides a chronological analysis of the Princely State in colonial times and its post-colonial legacies. Focusing on one of the largest and most important of these states, the Princely State of Mysore, it offers a novel interpretation and thorough investigation of the relationship of king and subject in South Asia. The book argues that the denial of political and economic power to the king, especially after 1831 when direct British control was imposed over the state administration in Mysore, was paralleled by a counter-balancing multiplication of kingly ritual, rites, and social duties. The book looks at how, at the very time when kingly authority was lacking income and powers of patronage, its local sources of power and social roots were being reinforced and rebuilt in a variety of ways. Using a combination of historical and anthropological methodologies, and based upon substantial archival and field research, the book argues that the idea of kingship lived on in South India and continues to play a vital and important role in contemporary South Indian social and political life. The turning-point in her life came when king Kausika, returning from a hunt, saw her among the crowd that had been drawn by the din and splendour ofthe cavalcade, and on the instant fell captive to her beauty.
