Book Vedic Index of Names and Subjects Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Vedic Index of Names and Subjects Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Arthur Anthony Macdonell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vedic Index of Names and Subjects, Vol. 2 Purfi-pavas is the name of a hero in a hymn of the Rigveda1 containing a curious dialogue between him and a nymph, Urvasi, an Apsaras. He is also mentioned in the Satapatha Brithmana,2 where several verses of the Rigvedic dialogue find a setting in a continuous story. In the later literature he is recognized as a king.3 His name is perhaps intended in one other passage of the Rigveda.4 It is impossible to say whether he is a mythical figure pure and simple, or really an ancient king. His epithet, Aila,5 'descendant of Ida' (a sacrificial goddess), is certainly in favour of the former alternative. This book’s approach is from the socio-historical perspective. It is a subaltern reading of the Vedic text, which not only establishes the fact that Purua-sktam is an interpolation but also unveils the reasons for its interpolation. The authors approach is both emic and etic at the same time; a perspective which bringing out unique insights. He has used a diachronic approach to trace the history of interpretation thus revealing the various layers of interpretations of this text. Book Origins of the Vedic Religion

Download or read book Origins of the Vedic Religion written by Sanjay Sonawani and published by Booktango. This book was released on 2015-04-16 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether Vedic people were indigenous habitants or emigrants is a hotly debated current issue. Both sides involved in the debate have been vehemently using the available evidences, with twists – caused at times due to sheer neglect and at times even fraudulently - to bring home their point of view, somehow. Nevertheless, what is the truth? Were there ever any migrations of so-called PIE language speakers, located at some hypothetical and yet uncertain homeland, to spread the language and culture? Are migrations necessary from any hypothetical homeland to result into a net of the languages? What was the geography of Rig Veda? Was the Avesta contemporaneous to the Rig Veda? Did any relation ever exist between the Vedic people and the Indus-Ghaggar civilisation? Is there any relationship between the Vedic religion and the modern Hindu religion? While answering to these vital questions, this book postulates a theory on the issue of the so-called IE languages and origins of the Vedic as well as the Zoroastrian religions. It diligently explains how the religious and cultural ethos of the Indus-Ghaggar Civilisation has flowed to us uninterrupted and exposes the schemes of the Vedicist scholars, who are attempting to claim its authorship!

Book The R m ya a of V lm ki An Epic of Ancient India Volume II

Download or read book The R m ya a of V lm ki An Epic of Ancient India Volume II written by and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of a translation of India's most beloved and influential epic saga, the monumental Rāmāyaṇa of Vālmīki. Of the seven sections of this great Sanskrit masterpiece, the Ayodhyakāṇḍa is the most human, and it remains one of the best introductions to the social and political values of traditional India. This readable translation is accompanied by commentary that elucidates the various problems of the text—philological, aesthetic, and cultural. The annotations make extensive use of the numerous commentaries on the Rāmāyaṇa composed in medieval India. The substantial introduction supplies a historical context for the poem and a critical reading that explores its literary and ideological components.

This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 1674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixth book of the Ramayana of Valmiki, the Yuddhakanda, recounts the final dramatic war between the forces of good led by the exiled prince Rama, and the forces of evil commanded by the arch demon Ravana. The hero Rama's primary purpose in the battle is to rescue the abducted princess Sita and destroy the demon king. However, the confrontation also marks the turning point for the divine mission of the Ramavatara, the incarnation of Lord Visnu as a human prince, who will restore righteousness to a world on the brink of chaos. The book ends with the gods' revelation to Rama of his true divine nature, his emotional reunion with his beloved wife, his long-delayed consecration as king of Kosala, and his restoration of a utopian age. The Yuddhakanda contains some of the most extraordinary events and larger-than-life characters to be found anywhere in world literature. This sixth volume in the critical edition and translation of the Valmiki Ramayana includes an extensive introduction, exhaustive notes, and a comprehensive bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays presented in this volume constitute a progression from general considerations related to the ‘etic’ (in the geertzian sense of the word) approach to South Asian cultural productions, to peculiar and detailed investigations of them. Such a sequence is meant to develop a renovated and systemic approach, through which these specific cultural materials should be interpreted: materials not to be read in isolation, nor with an overemphasised concern for cultural relativity. Rather, they should be viewed as meaningful examples of sophisticated intellectual and cultural procedures to be included into a broader comparative discussion, also in order to increase the quality and the depth of such debate.
