Book Vedic Cosmology and Ethics

Download or read book Vedic Cosmology and Ethics written by Henk W. Bodewitz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did ‘Vedic man’ think about the destiny of man after death and related ethical issues? That heaven was the abode of the gods was undisputed, but was it also accessible to man in his pursuit of immortality? Was there a realm of the deceased or a hell? What terms were used to indicate these ‘yonder worlds’? What is their location in the cosmos and which cosmographic classifications are at the root of these concepts? The articles by Henk Bodewitz collected in this volume, published over a period of 45 years, between 1969 and 2013, deal with these issues on the basis of a systematic philological study of early Vedic texts, from the Ṛgveda to various Brāhmaṇas, Āraṇykas and Upaniṣads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First time in the history of India, in 1958, a Sankaracarya visited West. The author, His Holiness Jagadguru Sankaracarya Sri Bharati Krsna Tirtha of Puri, went to America at the invitation of the Self Realization Fellowship, Los Angeles, to spread the message of Vedanta. This book is a compilation of some of his discourses delivered there. These discourses by a saint-yogi and master of ancient Indian scriptures, also well-versed in modern sciences, give the essentials of Vedanta. They combine authenticity of thought with simplicity of language. Being couched in the contemporary idiom they will be found to be particularly suited to the modern mind. Though addressed to American audiences, the discourses carry a message of eternal truth and of universal application. The steps of spiritual inquiry and the paths of God-realisation outlined in them will be of immense practical use to the readers in their quest for the Supreme.

Book The Centrality of Ethics in Buddhism

Download or read book The Centrality of Ethics in Buddhism written by Hari Shankar Prasad and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, through extensive textual study, explores the Buddha's and Buddhism's uncompromising and unflinching emphasis on the centrality of ethics as against any pernicious dogmas and metaphysical beliefs, and their attempts to causally relate moral perfection to soteriological or eschatological goal. What is most admirable about Buddhism is that it integrates the vertical development of human consciousness, for which the other is the necessary condition, with the gradual development of morality. It was this emphasis which separated Siddhartha, before he attained the Awakened Wisdom (bodhi), from his teachers - Alara Kalama and Uddaka Ramaputta - and it is for this reason that the Buddha calls himself and his Dhamma Patisotagami, i.e. going against the currents of the prevailing dogmas and pernicious beliefs. In brief, Buddhism is about overcoming of suffering, the greatest evil, through ethicization of human consciousness and conduct, which also takes care of the ethicization of the society and the universe. Besides, some of the essays of this book explore many other themes like Buddhist epistemology, nature of self, time, and intercultural.

Book excerpt: In this book, the author seeks access to Karma's origins by following several clues suggested by the doctrine's earliest formulation in the Upanistexts (circa 600-500 B.C.) These clues lead back to the mythical and ritual structures firmly established in the Brahmana texts, texts concerned with the rituals that chronologically and conceptually precede the UpanisThe rise of the karma doctrine is tied to the increasing dominance in late Vedic thought of the cosmic man (Purusa/Prajapati) mythology and its ritual analogue the "building of the fire altar" (agnicayana).

Book excerpt: We are situated in the fifty-first Brahma year of the existence of our Brahma.Inside that Brahma year, we are in the primary Brahma day, called the Varaha Kalpa.Inside that Brahma day, we are in the seventh manvantara and in the 28th maha yuga of that manvantara. This would put us at about the 454th maha yuga of the 1,000 maha yugas that include this day of Brahma.Inside this maha yuga, we are in Kali Yuga. The 5100th year of Kali Yuga will relate to the year 2,000 A.D. That implies that we are genuinely right off the bat in Kali Yuga, and this age will proceed with more than 426,000 additional years.Variation Interpretations of Hindu ChronologyThe "Customary Puranic Model" portrayed above is settled upon by most creators on Hinduism and Yoga. Six distinct creators, recorded toward the finish of this paper, represent this model indistinguishably.A few different creators, some of the notable Hindu instructors, have distributed portrayals of the pattern of ages that vary from the conventional Puranic model. These variation hypotheses are depicted beneath.

Book Soul and Self in Vedic India

Download or read book Soul and Self in Vedic India written by Per-Johan Norelius and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-06-19 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the Vedic Indians think of life, consciousness, and personhood? How did they envisage man’s fate after death? Did some part of the person survive the death of the body and depart for the beyond? Is it possible to speak of a “soul” or “souls” in the context of Vedic tradition? This book sets out to answer these questions in a systematic manner, subjecting the relevant Vedic beliefs to a detailed chronological investigation. Special attention is given to the ways in which the early Indians’ answers to the above problems changed over time, with an early pluralism of soul-like concepts later giving way to the unified “self” of the Upaniṣads.

Book Extraterrestrial Ethics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jensine Andresen
  • Publisher : Ethics International Press
  • Release : 2023-05-19
  • ISBN : 1871891361
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book Extraterrestrial Ethics written by Jensine Andresen and published by Ethics International Press. This book was released on 2023-05-19 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book takes both inductive and deductive approaches to the topic of extraterrestrial ethics. Inductively, it asks what kind of ethics an advanced, intelligent extraterrestrial species might display. Deductively, it asks how human beings should transform their own understanding of ethics to prepare for widespread contact with an advanced extraterrestrial species. Using the ontological interpretation of quantum mechanics proposed by physicist and philosopher David Bohm, Extraterrestrial Ethics considers how an extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) may view ethical concerns relating to humankind. The book examines two areas of concern: nuclear technologies; and the militarization and weaponization of space. The text of the Fiscal Year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (FY22 NDAA) in the United States clearly states that Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) have been reported at sites associated with nuclear weapons, nuclear-powered ships and submarines, nuclear power generating stations, etc., suggesting that ETI is very concerned about the human use of nuclear technologies. Furthermore, the more ubiquitous level of UAP sightings by the U.S. military over the last few years, as documented in the June 2021 report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) in the U.S., suggest that ETI also is concerned about rapid acceleration relating to the militarization and weaponization of space. The book concludes by advocating a normative approach to de-militarize space.
