Book Flight Physics

Download or read book Flight Physics written by E. Torenbeek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-06 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge is not merely everything we have come to know, but also ideas we have pondered long enough to know in which way they are related, and 1 how these ideas can be put to practical use. Modern aviation has been made possible as a result of much scienti c - search. However, the very rst useful results of this research became ava- able a considerable length of time after the aviation pioneers had made their rst ights. Apparently, researchers were not able to nd an adequate exp- nation for the occurrence of lift until the beginning of the 21st century. Also, for the fundamentals of stability and control, there was no theory available that the pioneers could rely on. Only after the rst motorized ights had been successfully made did researchers become more interested in the science of aviation, which from then on began to take shape. In modern day life, many millions of passengers are transported every year by air. People in the western societies take to the skies, on average, several times a year. Especially in areas surrounding busy airports, travel by plane has been on the rise since the end of the Second World War. Despite becoming familiar with the sight of a jumbo jet commencing its ight once or twice a day, many nd it astonishing that such a colossus with a mass of several hundred thousands of kilograms can actually lift off from the ground.

Book Topics in Nonlinear Dynamics

Download or read book Topics in Nonlinear Dynamics written by Erik Mosekilde and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-03-20 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a series of examples from physics, engineering, biology and economics, this book illustrates the enormous potential for application of ideas and concepts from nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory. The overlap with examples published in other books is virtually equal to zero. The book takes the reader from detailed studies of bifurcation structures of relativity simple models to pattern formation in spatially extended systems. The book also discusses the different perspectives that nonlinear dynamics brings to different fields of science.

Book excerpt: This book consists of 113 selected papers presented at the 2015 International Conference on Mechanical Engineering and Control Systems (MECS2015), which was held in Wuhan, China during January 23-25, 2015. All accepted papers have been subjected to strict peer review by two to four expert referees, and selected based on originality, ability to test ideas and contribution to knowledge.MECS2015 focuses on eight main areas, namely, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, Computer Networks, Signal Processing, Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Material Engineering, and System Design. The conference provided an opportunity for researchers to exchange ideas and application experiences, and to establish business or research relations, finding global partners for future collaborations. The conference program was extremely rich, profound and featured high-impact presentations of selected papers and additional late-breaking contributions.

Download or read book Animal Weapons written by Douglas J. Emlen and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PHI BETA KAPPA AWARD IN SCIENCE The story behind the stunning, extreme weapons we see in the animal world--teeth and horns and claws--and what they can tell us about the way humans develop and use arms and other weapons In Animal Weapons, Doug Emlen takes us outside the lab and deep into the forests and jungles where he's been studying animal weapons in nature for years, to explain the processes behind the most intriguing and curious examples of extreme animal weapons—fish with mouths larger than their bodies and bugs whose heads are so packed with muscle they don't have room for eyes. As singular and strange as some of the weapons we encounter on these pages are, we learn that similar factors set their evolution in motion. Emlen uses these patterns to draw parallels to the way we humans develop and employ our own weapons, and have since battle began. He looks at everything from our armor and camouflage to the evolution of the rifle and the structures human populations have built across different regions and eras to protect their homes and communities. With stunning black and white drawings and gorgeous color illustrations of these concepts at work, Animal Weapons brings us the complete story of how weapons reach their most outsized, dramatic potential, and what the results we witness in the animal world can tell us about our own relationship with weapons of all kinds.

Book The Biomechanics of Insect Flight

Download or read book The Biomechanics of Insect Flight written by Robert Dudley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the rain forests of Borneo to the tenements of Manhattan, winged insects are a conspicuous and abundant feature of life on earth. Here, Robert Dudley presents the first comprehensive explanation of how insects fly. The author relates the biomechanics of flight to insect ecology and evolution in a major new work of synthesis. The book begins with an overview of insect flight biomechanics. Dudley explains insect morphology, wing motions, aerodynamics, flight energetics, and flight metabolism within a modern phylogenetic setting. Drawing on biomechanical principles, he describes and evaluates flight behavior and the limits to flight performance. The author then takes the next step by developing evolutionary explanations of insect flight. He analyzes the origins of flight in insects, the roles of natural and sexual selection in determining how insects fly, and the relationship between flight and insect size, pollination, predation, dispersal, and migration. Dudley ranges widely--from basic aerodynamics to muscle physiology and swarming behavior--but his focus is the explanation of functional design from evolutionary and ecological perspectives. The importance of flight in the lives of insects has long been recognized but never systematically evaluated. This book addresses that shortcoming. Robert Dudley provides an introduction to insect flight that will be welcomed by students and researchers in biomechanics, entomology, evolution, ecology, and behavior.

Book Propulsion System Performance Resulting from an Integrated Flight propulsion Control Design

Download or read book Propulsion System Performance Resulting from an Integrated Flight propulsion Control Design written by Duane Loren Mattern and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Propulsion-system-specific results are presented from the application of the integrated methodology for propulsion and airframe control (IMPAC) design approach to integrated flight/propulsion control design for a 'short takeoff and vertical landing' (STOVL) aircraft in transition flight. The IMPAC method is briefly discussed and the propulsion system specifications for the integrated control design are examined. The structure of a linear engine controller that results from partitioning a linear centralized controller is discussed. The details of a nonlinear propulsion control system are presented, including a scheme to protect the engine operational limits: the fan surge margin and the acceleration/deceleration schedule that limits the fuel flow. Also, a simple but effective multivariable integrator windup protection scheme is examined. Nonlinear closed-loop simulation results are presented for two typical pilot commands for transition flight: acceleration while maintaining flightpath angle and a change in flightpath angle while maintaining airspeed. The simulation nonlinearities include the airframe/engine coupling, the actuator and sensor dynamics and limits, the protection scheme for the engine operational limits, and the integrator windup protection. Satisfactory performance of the total airframe plus engine system for transition flight, as defined by the specifications, was maintained during the limit operation of the closed-loop engine subsystem.
