As an application we first use our approach to obtain the usual puzzling result?(? -> f0?)/?(? -> a0°?)H" 1 rather than the observed value of about 3. The model makes it easy to test in detail a recent proposal to solve this puzzle by including the isospin violating a0°-f0 mixing and we find that it seems successful.

There, a simple vector meson dominance model is constructed in an initial attempt to relate a large number of the radiative decays involving a putative scalar nonet to each other. As an application it is illustrated why a0(980)-f0(980) mixing is not expected to greatly alter the f0/a0 production ratio for radiative [phi] decays.

Assuming that the light scalar mesons form a nonet this model gives relations among various decay amplitudes of the form S--> gamma gamma, V-->Sgamma and S--> Vgamma, where S and V denote scalar and vector mesons. By comparing with experimental radiative decay rates, including those recently measured for phi--> PP'gamma, we obtain various predictions. We discuss briefly ongoing extensions of the present work in an attempt to describe the radiative phi decay measurements in detail.

Book excerpt: The role of scalar mesons in radiative vector meson decays is investigated. The effects of scalar-isoscalar f_{0}(980) and scalar-isovector a_{0}(980) mesons are studied in the mechanism of the radiative Phi->pi{+}pi{-}gamma and phi->pi{0}eta gamma decays, respectively. A phenomenological approach is used to study the radiative phi->pi{+}p{-}gamma decay by considering the contributions of sigma-meson, rho-meson and f_{0}-meson. The interference effects between different contributions are analyzed and the branching ratio for this decay is calculated. The radiative phi->pi{0}eta gamma decay is studied within the framework of a phenomenological approach in which the contributions of rho-meson, chiral loop and a_{0}-meson are considered. The interference effects between different contributions are examined and the coupling constants g_{phi a_{0} gamma} and g_{a_{0}K{+}K{-}} are estimated using the experimental branching ratio for the phi->pi{0}eta gamma decay. Furthermore, the radiative rho{0}pi{+}pi{-}gamma$ and rho{0}->pi{0}pi{0}gamma decays are studied to investigate the role of scalar-isoscalar sigma-meson. The branching ratios of the rho{0}->pi{+}pi{-}gamma and rho{0}->pi{0}pi{0}gamma decays are calculated using a phenomenological approach by adding to the amplitude calculated within the framework of chiral perturbation theory and vector meson dominance the amplitude of sigma-meson intermediate state. In all the decays studied the scalar meson intermediate states make important contributions to the overall amplitude.

Book excerpt: We use the light-front quark model to investigate the structure of the scalar mesons, mainly focusing on the three heavy isoscalar states f0(1370), f0(1500), and f0(1710). We comput the spectrum of scalar mesons by diagonalizing a relativized, QCD-inspired model Hamiltonian written in a basis of 25 simple harmonic oscillator states. The masses are then used to perform a mixing analysis which assumes that the heavy isoscalars are mixtures of quarkonia and the scalar glueball. The resulting quark-glue content is used along with the meson wave functions determined from the spectrum to compute the decay rates to pairs of pseudoscalar mesons (two pions, two kaons, two eta mesons). We find that when the glueball contributions to the decays are ignored, the results are in poor agreement with the available data. However, when we estimate the effect of including the glueball contributions in the decays, a solution can be found that matches the data quite well. In this solution, the f0(1710) is mostly glueball (78%) while the f0(1500) and f0(1370) are mostly mixtures of quarkonia. Additionally, in this solution the glueball contributions to kaon and eta final states are significant, while the contributions to the pion final state is negligible. This finding is in agreement with Chanowitz who uses chiral perturbation theory to show that the amplitude for a scalar glueball to decay to a quark-antiquark pair is proportional to the quark mass. This results in a suppression of the pion decay channel compared to the kaon and eta decay channels.

This include Dalitz decay of pseudoscalar and vector mesons, radiative decay of pseudoscalar mesons as well hadronic decays of pseudoscalar and vector mesons. The collected high statistics in some of decay channels exceeds the world data by an order of magnitude and some other decay modes are observed for the first time. It is shown how the CLAS data will improve the world data on transition form factors of light mesons, Dalitz plot analyses, branching ratios of rare decay modes and other fundamental properties potentially accessible through the light meson decays.
