Book excerpt: The antiquity and universality of the Zodiac can be traced back to the earliest Theogonies. It was not the Greeks who invented the Zodiac, for the simple reason that they did not yet exist as a nation thirty-seven centuries B.C. The dodecahedron is a perfect number and one among many signs of the Zodiac that the Sun visits in twelve months. It was in honour of that sign that Moses divided his nation into twelve symbolical tribes. Berosus predicted future events by the Zodiac; and the time fixed by him for the conflagration of the world, and another for a deluge, comes at every renewal of the cycle of the sidereal year of 25,868 years. The Hindus date their Kali-Yuga from the great periodical conjunction of the planets at 3,100 before the birth of Christ. Diogenes Laërtius carried back the astronomical calculations of the Egyptians to 48,683 years before Alexander the Great. The cycle of Initiation was a reproduction in miniature of that great series of Cosmic changes to which astronomers have given the name of tropical or sidereal year. Just as, at the close of the cycle of the sidereal year (25,868 mortal years), the heavenly bodies return to the same relative positions as they occupied at its outset, so at the close of the cycle of Initiation the inner man may regain the pristine state of divine purity and knowledge, from which he set out on his cycle of terrestrial incarnations. The connection of the twelve Jewish patriarchs with the Zodiac is a tacit “divine” recognition of the “chosen people of God,” whose finger has purposely traced in heaven, from the beginning of creation, the numbers of these patriarchs. Even the banners of these tribes are claimed to have exhibited the same symbols as those of the zodiacal signs. In the universe of differentiated matter everything is mathematically co-ordinated and mutually related in its units. Replace God with of Karma, and he will become an Eastern axiom. Why see in the Pisces a direct reference to Jesus, one of several world-reformers, when that constellation shines as a symbol of all past, present, and future Spiritual Saviours who dispense light and dispel mental darkness? The Jews had evidently and undeniably borrowed their chronology from the Chaldeans, along with their gods. Of the 432,000 years of the Chaldean divine Dynasties they made 4,320 lunar years from the world’s creation to the Christian era; as to the Babylonian and Egyptian Gods, they transformed them as quietly and modestly into Patriarchs. The Zodiac existed hundreds of million of years before the Christian era. Each planetary conjunction is a climacteric year of humanity. All Sun-gods had been mystically connected with the constellation of Taurus, which was called “the great city of God and mother of revelations” and “the interpreter of the divine voice.” The ansated Egyptian cross or Tau, the Jaina cross or Svastika, and the Christian cross have all the same meaning. No peoples or nations, except the Christians, gave the significance to the Dragon that is given to it now. The Serpent was the symbol of Wisdom; and the Taurus, sacred in every Cosmogony, the symbol of physical or terrestrial generation. It was from the Hindu systems of astronomy that the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, and even the Jews derived their knowledge. It is the antiquity of the nations of the East which has erected their scientific fame. For patience accumulated knowledge; and prolonged experience produced wisdom. Time itself was their teacher; they knew the motions of the heavenly bodies during these intervals because they had seen them; and the duration of the Hindu people on earth is the cause of the fidelity of its records and the accuracy of its calculations. The descent and re-ascent of the human soul cannot be disconnected from the Zodiacal signs, and it feels more natural to believe in the mysterious sympathy between the metaphysical soul and the bright constellations, and in the influence of the latter on the former, than in the absurd notion that the creators of Heaven and Earth have placed in Heaven the types of twelve vicious Jews. In esoteric philosophy Patriarchs are the progenitors of the human race, the “Mind-born Sons” of Brahmā. They are the nursery and fountainhead of human beings. This is the occult meaning of the Biblical Patriarchs, of their genealogy, and of their descendants dividing among themselves the earth. First 7 are mentioned, then 10, 21, and so on. The Jewish Patriarchs were pastors, not priests.

Behind the veil of terrestrial phenomena, the Occultist sees in the Elemental Forces of Nature secondary Causes which are, in themselves, the effects of primary Causes produced and guided unerringly by Divine Intelligences. The idea of anything in Nature being inorganic or dead is materially fallacious, and is utterly rejected by Esoteric Philosophy. When matter appears inert, it is the most active. A stone block is motionless and impenetrable to all intents and purposes. Nevertheless, its particles are in ceaseless eternal vibration which is so rapid that, to the physical eye, the stone seems devoid of motion. Substance is the pre-cosmic substratum of matter, undifferentiated yet interrelated with Ideation, supersensuous but atomic, informed by the Divine Breath of its form. Substance does not mean matter in metaphysics. It is boundless Æther, formless and supernal, the ultimate essence of matter in Space and noumenon of evanescent matter on Earth. Ether is physical and infernal. Kosmos is Eternal Noetic Motion Unmanifested, the Great Breath of One Element. Father-Æther is the source and cause of All Cosmic Forces, which are differentiated aspects of Cosmic Substance, generated by substantial yet super-sensuous Powers. Our Cosmos is ruled by Creative and Intelligent Occult Forces: they are emanations of conscious living entities, acting behind the veil of matter. The forces we know of are but the phenomenal manifestations of realities we know nothing about, but which were known by the ancients. The truths of today are the falsehoods of yesterday. Conceit and prejudice strangle every truth. As only truth can dispel error, Truth should be the sole aim of Science and Justice. It is true that pure Force is nothing in the world of physics; but it is the All in the domain of metaphysics. Inertia is the Greatest of Occult Forces. A flying cannon ball moves only from its own inherent Force of Inertia. Eternal Vibration is the spiritual term for Motion Unmanifested, unconscious, innate, noumenal. It is the “Great Breath” of the One Eternal Element. Vortical Motion is the material term for Motion Manifested, conscious, external, phenomenal. Whatever may be the future name given to the Force of Inertia by scientists, to maintain that that Force does not reside in the atoms but only in the “space between them,” is not true. To the mind of an Occultist it is like saying that water does not reside in the drops of which the ocean is composed, but only in the space between those drops. The Atom belongs wholly to the domain of metaphysics. It is an entified abstraction and has nought to do with physics, strictly speaking, as it can never be brought to the test of retort or balance. Avogadro’s law holds the same place in chemistry as the law of gravitation does in astronomy. Occultists see in gravity only Sympathy and Antipathy, or Attraction and Repulsion, caused by physical polarity on our terrestrial plane, and by spiritual causes beyond our illusive earth. Matter, to the Occultist and to those men of Science who care too much for truth and too little for their vanity to dogmatise, is that totality of existences in the Kosmos, which falls within any of the planes of possible perception. If Scientists could fathom the ultimate nature of these Forces, they would have first to admit their substantial nature, however supersensuous. Science merely traces the sequence of phenomena on a plane of effects, illusory projections from the region that Occultism has long since penetrated. Light and heat, sound and cohesion, are the ghosts or shadows of matter in motion. However, there is no fundamental difference between light and heat, each is merely a metamorphosis of the other. Heat is light in complete repose. Light is heat in rapid motion. When light is combined with a body, it becomes heat; but when thrown off from that body, heat reverts to light. Occult Science may err in particulars but it can never become guilty of a mistake in questions of Universal Laws, simply because Divine Science was born on higher planes, and was brought on Earth by Beings who were far wiser than man will ever be. Occult Science may be less well-informed as to the behaviour of compound elements in various cases of physical correlations: still, it is immeasurably higher in its knowledge of the ultimate occult states of matter, and of the true nature of matter, than all the Academies of Science of our day may possess. Occult Science does not regard either electricity, or any of the forces supposedly generated by it, as matter in any of the states known to physical Science. None of these “forces,” so-called, are either solids, gases, or fluids. An Occultist would even object to electricity being called a fluid, as it is an effect and not the cause. But its noumenon, he would say, is a conscious cause. The force, which materialism considers as the cause of the diversity that surrounds us, is in sober reality only an effect, i.e., a result of that diversity. In other words, the cause of any force is not matter, but motion itself. And thus the great dogma, “no force without matter and no matter without force,” is dethroned and loses the solemn significance with which materialism has tried to invest it. If nature abhors vacuum, what is atom? To admit the divisibility of the atom, amounts to an admission of an infinite divisibility of substance, which is equivalent to reducing substance to nothingness. If the Universe is composed of atoms, then those atoms must be elastic. Absolutely non-elastic atoms could never exhibit a single one of those numerous phenomena that are attributed to their correlations. Without any elasticity the atoms could not manifest their energy, and the substance of the materialists would remain weeded of every force. Materialism is now enmeshed in a fatal circle of its own making. If the blind inertia of physical Science is replaced by the Intelligent Active Powers behind the veil of illusive matter, motion and inertia become subservient to those Powers. Acceptance of the infinite divisibility of the atom opens limitless horizons to Substance, informed by the Divine Breath of its Soul in every possible state of tenuity, states still undreamt of even by the most spiritually disposed chemists and physicists. But alas, the insanities of materialism and pessimism are incurable. The most Science can do is to assume the attitude of agnosticism. But to do this, requires a boundless love of truth and the surrender of the prestige of infallibility, which the men of Science have acquired among the flippant masses. Dualistic and anthropomorphic may be the philosophy of Vishisht Advaita, when compared with the non-duality of Advaita, it is yet supremely higher in logic and philosophy than the cosmogenesis exalted by Christianity and Science, its great opponents.

Book excerpt: At the first flutter of renascent life, the mutable radiance of the Immutable Darkness passes from an inactive state into one of intense activity, and then begins its work through continuous differentiation and individualisation —propelled and ushered by Karma. Cosmic Cycles are subservient to the effects produced by this activity. Radiating from the rootless root-essence, the One Cosmic Atom becomes seven atoms on the plane of matter. Each atom is then transformed into a centre of energy, and radiates seven rays on the plane of spirit and seven creative forces in nature. The spiritual septenary on the right path and the material counterpart on the left, though they evolve in close embrace, remain separate till the end of the Kalpa. The visible Kosmos consists of self-produced beings, creatures of Karma. The true Buddhist denies the creation of Patristic fancy and regards the anthropomorphic God as a gigantic shadow thrown upon the void of space by the imagination of ignorant men. The task of analysing and classifying the human being as a terrestrial animal may be left to Science. But man’s inner, spiritual, psychic, and moral nature cannot be left to the tender mercies of an ingrained materialism. Molecularists such as Huxley demean certainty to probability, and rush to announce firm conclusions while the premisses are still to collect. They had sown wind and reaped the whirlwind. Within the global cycles of material descend and spiritual ascend, there are perpetual racial, national, and individual cycles of time ever returning upon themselves, periodically and intelligently, in Space and Eternity. The continuity and unity of history are principles of scientific divination, by which alone the mind penetrates the sealed records of the past and the unopened pages of the future. The whole past of the Earth is nothing but an unfolding present. The chief features of one’s life are always in accordance with the “constellation” one is born under, i.e., with the characteristics of its animating principle or the deity that presides over it. The closer the approach to one’s prototype “in heaven,” the better for the mortal whose personality was chosen by his own personal deity as its terrestrial abode. Our destiny is written in the stars. The closer the union between the mortal reflection, man, and his celestial prototype, the less dangerous the external conditions and subsequent reincarnations, which neither Buddhas nor Christs can escape. When the last strand is woven and man is enwrapped in the network of his own doing, he finds himself completely under the empire of his self-made destiny. It then either throws him like the inert shell against the immovable rock, or carries him away like a feather in a whirlwind raised by his own actions. Reason governs the world, its history, and its destiny. All else is subordinate and subservient to it, and the means for its development. Those who seek to satisfy their own purposes, are instruments of a higher and broader purpose, of which they know nothing, though they may realise it unconsciously. The law of evolution is now carrying us along the ascending arc of our cycle, when discordant effects will once again merge into counterbalanced causes, and all things will have regained their original harmony. The great Racial Cycles affect all the nations and tribes; but there are minor and national as well as tribal cycles within those, which run independently of each other. In the East they are known as Karmic cycles. In the West, since Pagan Wisdom has been repudiated as having grown from by dark powers supposed to be at constant war (and in opposition to the little tribal Jehovah), the awful significance of Karma-Nemesis has been entirely forgotten. But, in truth, Karma is the creator of nations and mortals; and it is they who make of her either a fury or a rewarding angel. There is not a single accident in our lives, not a misshapen day, which could not be traced back to our own doings in this or in a previous life. Karma-Nemesis is the synonym of Divine Providence, minus design, goodness, and every other finite qualification, so unphilosophically attributed to her. An Occultist will not speak of the goodness or cruelty of Providence; but he will teach that she guards the virtuous and watches over them in this, as in future lives; and that it punishes the evil-doer — even to his seventh rebirth. Were no man to hurt his brother, Karma would have neither cause to work for, nor weapons to act through. Nor would the ways of Karma remain inscrutable, were men to work in union and harmony, instead of disunion and strife. For our ignorance of those ways — which one portion of mankind calls the ways of Providence, dark and intricate; while another sees in them the action of blind Fatalism; and a third, mere chance, with neither gods nor devils to guide them — would surely disappear, if we would but attribute all these to their correct cause and learn how to be kind to each other. Karma is a law of occult dynamics, governing life throughout the universe, whether visible or invisible. Only the sceptics will shut their eyes, ostrich-like, to their own fate. This state will last till we begin acting from within, instead of ever following impulses from without; namely, those produced by our physical senses and barefaced selfishness. Until then, the only palliative to the evils of life is union and harmony — brotherhood in action, not simply in name. The suppression of one single bad cause will suppress not one, but a variety of bad effects, and hold back additional causes in a world already full of woe and evil. Karma is the unerring law of truth and justice which makes empires rise and fall, and adjusts even laughter at the mutual expense of sects, learned societies, and individuals. Prognostication of future events is neither prevision, nor prophecy: it is simply occult knowledge and mathematically correct computations that enable the wise men of the East to foretell, for instance, that the British Isles are on the eve of being destroyed by submarine volcanos and water, followed by France and other European countries, led by their own cycles of racial Karma.

The meaning of the dotted line explained. Light drops one Solitary Ray. Then number strides in the regions of the universe. Eastern and Kabbalistic Cosmogonies are Identical (Diagram). Cosmogenesis and Anthropogenesis numerically and geometrically expressed. The One attracts within itself the Divine Unity of the One Circle and forms out of It the Perfect Square, thus “squaring the circle.” The Great Circle or Ring Pass-Not is the “Rope of the Angels” hedging off the phenomenal from the noumenal Kosmos. That Circle is the Universal Principle which, from any given point, expands to embrace all things, while embodying the potentiality of every action in Kosmos. How does the Triangle become the Square? How does the Square become the Six-faced Cube? How does the Triad becomes a Tetrad, the Pythagorean Perfect Square in heaven, and a Cube on earth? Mathematically expressed, Logos become Tetragrammaton, i.e., the Three become Four. When the Spiritual Ego, the holy number , germ and matrix of the , enters the animal body, the faces of the cube unfold, thus forming the cross of passions upon which material man (Chrēstos) crucifies himself and disappoints his glorious Spirit (Christos). Kabbalistic interpretation of the “crucifixion nails” reveals their sexual meaning. The occult meaning of the Svastika, emblem of the activity of Fohat, symbolised by the figure and the Sacred Four, explained. The true Word may only be found by tracing the mystery of the passage inward and outward of Life Eternal, through the states typified in the Unmanifested Circle, the Triangle, and the Perfect Square. “The true Word may only be found by tracing the mystery of the passage inward and outward of the Eternal Life, through the states typified in these three geometric figures,” says a Master of Wisdom. The Divine Heptad is the key to squaring the circle and to the philosophers’ stone, which is no stone. The Ineffable Word, being composed of Seven Letters, represents the First Hebdomad. The Seventh Letter is the highest in initiations; the remaining six are substitutes. The Sacred Word is the Central Mathematical Point, around which the Six-pointed star, emblem of the Theosophical Society, revolves and evolves. The meaning of two Interlaced Triangles explained by a Master of Wisdom. The Unmanifested Circle or Absolute Life, is non-existent outside the Ideal Triangle and Perfect Square. It manifests through them as the “Son,” i.e., Kosmos and Man. On the outward Path of Action, the Second One (Atma), in order to manifest itself as Logos, Its concealed duality (Atma-Buddhi) has to become three (Atma-Buddhi-Manas). On the inward Path of Renunciation, Logos Revealed attracts within Itself the Circle and reverts to Its original state of Absolute Unity by forming out of it the Perfect Square, and inscribing within it the Ineffable Name. The Solar Flames are reflections of the Central Spiritual Sun, the Life-giver to Kosmos, radiating from the Central Point which is “everywhere and nowhere,” from whence emanates and whither returns the Kosmic Intelligence (sentient Beings) scattered throughout the manifested worlds. The visible Sun is the Father of the physical man; the Moon is his Mother. The visible Sun is a ball of electromagnetic forces, glowing but not burning. It is not even the proximal source of visible light and heat in our solar system. It is the focus, reflector, and veil of the ever-Concealed Central Spiritual Sun — therefore mere illusion. Our Sun will become a comet in future manvantaras. The Central Spiritual Sun is the storehouse of Vital Force (noumenon of Electricity), those life currents which thrill through Space, as through every creature on Earth. The Vital Force, intelligently guided, radiates around man like a luminous sphere. Suspended like a fœtus within the Macrocosm (Universe or Spiritus Mundi, i.e., Spirit of the visible Universe) the Microcosm (Mankind) is vitalised and energised by the Archæus or Liquor Vitæ, the Fluid of Life (Nerve Aura), through which the Cosmic Forces, regulated and sustained by the never-resting Breaths (Agents of Cosmic Laws) act upon the astral body of man curled in the spleen. Pantheism was known and felt by the whole of antiquity. It manifests itself in the vast expanse of the starry heavens, in the breathing of the seas and oceans, and in the quiver of life of the smallest blade of grass. Esoteric Philosophy rejects the finite and imperfect God in our Universe, as the anthropomorphic deity of the monotheist is represented by his followers. The Vedic Aryans were as familiar with the mysteries of colour and sound as our physiologists are on the physical plane. Moreover, they had mastered the potencies of colour, sound, and number on planes inaccessible to the materialists. The spiritual senses, those that act on higher planes of consciousness, are rejected by physiology because the latter is ignorant of the Sacred Science. Yet mental as well as physical correlations of the senses (seven on the physical, and seven on the mental planes) are clearly explained and defined in the Vedas. The seven notes of the scale are the principles of sound. The qualities of every element, as of every sense, are also septenary and to dogmatize upon them, from their likewise septenary manifestation, is whimsical. It is only when Manas (Higher Ego) soars above the mists of ignorance, that the qualities of objects of sense on their dual plane of manifestations (visible and invisible) can be clearly seen and comprehended. The division of the physical senses into five comes to us from great antiquity. But while adopting the number, no modern philosopher has asked himself how these senses could exist, i.e., be perceived in a self-conscious way, unless there was a sixth sense (mental perception) to register and record them; and this, for the Occultist, is the Seventh Sense, that preserves the spiritual fruition and remembrance thereof, as in a Book of Life. Nature shall unveil her mysteries only to those sincere and diligent students of Occult Philosophy — who when pure, impartial, and unexpecting, act as centres of benevolent work — and shall lead them to the contemplation of celestial powers. We keep cycling back and forward. Having lost in spirituality pro rata what we had gained in physicality near the end of the Four Race (Atlantean), we are now cycling forward and upward until we reach the period that will bring the Sixth Race (Enlightened) on a parallel line with the spirituality of the Second (Sweat-born), the long extinct Race of humanity. Then, by cutting the Tree of Life, the slaves of birth–life–death shall be finally freed from the trammels and tyranny of matter. Colours and sounds are associated with the Hierarchy of Compassion, the Manifested Logos. Colour is Spirit (Atman), sound is Voice (Buddhi), and proportion of numbers is Word (Higher Manas). Each prismatic colour is the “Father of the Sound” which corresponds to it; Sound, being the Word or Logos, is his “Father’s Thought.” Thus the Creative Force produces colours, sounds, and numbers, in the shape of rates of vibration, which compound and dissociate atoms and molecules. Perfect knowledge of the correspondences between colours, sounds, and numbers is the first requisite for the student of Occult Philosophy. Who can assume the flower of power, the plant of the golden stem, and the azure blossom? The calamitous error leading to the sum total of mistaken views among the materialists is this: the so-called Nervous Ether is not an animal product, it is the living animal itself. It is the lowest principle of Primordial Essence, which is Life — that animal vitality diffused all around Nature; the flowers of self-consciousness, unfolding from within outwardly, are its products. But beware, under every flower there is a serpent coiled. Even when death arrives the Fluid of Life does not abandon the body. It only changes its state from activity to passivity, assuming dormancy because of the morbid state of tissues upon which it has no more hold. Once the rigor mortis has set it, the Liquor Vitæ reactivates and begins its work on the atoms chemically. The Vital Force radiates within and around a person like a luminous aura. It can be made to act at a distance to poison a fellow human being or, conversely, to heal the sick and restore health.

The four letters of the Tetragrammaton is a mere mask concealing its polar connection with the supernal and the infernal worlds. The Tetragrammaton is Microprosopus, a “Lesser Face,” and the infernal reflection of Macroprosopus, the “Limitless Face.” AHIH and IHVH are glyphs of existence and symbols of terrestrial-androgynous life; they cannot be confounded with EHEIEH which is the Parabrahman of the Vedantist, That of the Chhandogya Upanishad, The Absolute of Hegel, The One Life of the Buddhist, the Ain-Soph (the Hebrew Parabrahman). They are transient reflections of EHEIEH, and therefore illusions of separateness. The Tetragrammaton is a phantom veiled with four breaths. It is dual, triple, quaternary, and septenary. Man is cube unfolding as cross. The One is She, the Spirit of the Elohim of Life. The “lesser countenance” of the Tetragrammaton is the fourth kabbalistic world. “Father-Mother,” being of bisexual material, belong to the creative world, out of which the “Son” or Universe is formed. This “Son” is Microprosopus, a blind to conceal the septenary constitution of man from the profane. The Tetragrammaton is “Father-Mother-Son” or Jehovah, whose name is IHVH and whose letters, when read symbolically, can be interpreted in two or twelve ways. Jehovah is merely a composite name for membrum virile and Eve, a hermaphrodite. He is, in one sense, Noah (Hebrew Yah) or, literally translated, inch — the British inch! Jehovah-Tsebaoth refused to create, as the seven mind-born sons of Brahmā did, but instead fought and conquered the Dragon of Wisdom. Thus the child of matter and sin was born, and Divinity was hurled down into the bottomless pit. The Theosophist’s Deity is not the two-faced Tetragrammaton, but the Crown, which has nought to do with the material world. Madame Blavatsky declined union with the lower sevenfold and seven-lettered Jehovah, and preferred pinning her faith to Ain-Soph — Pure and Simple. The nature of the material world is also seven-fold. Is the Tetragrammaton in the midst of us, or the Negatively Existent One? Shekinah is primordial light emanating from the ever-concealed Ain-Soph. In the archetypal world she is Sephirah. In the material and formative worlds she becomes Shekinah, which is latent life and light. She is the Buddhi of the physical body. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil has seven branches, on each of which are four leaves and three fruits. Anyone endowed with a moderate dose of ingenuity can make what he likes of the unpointed Hebrew words and letters. But the explanations herewith presented require nothing but knowledge of the Seventh Esoteric Key. There now follow six different readings of the first word only (B’rashith) in Genesis — one of countless examples of Christian deceit and scriptural manipulation. Madame Blavatsky always sought conciliation with disputants over doctrinal mistakes or misinterpretations, and shunned quarrels and point-scoring. The Occultist prefers working for the Cause and the triumph of Truth with all his heart and soul, than prevailing over piffling disputations. Materialism is raising its ghastly head higher than ever. Pontifications of an anti-kabbalistic champion of modern science. The whole essence of Truth cannot be transmitted from mouth to ear. Nor can any pen describe it, not even that of the recording Angel, unless man finds the answer in the sanctuary of his own heart, in the innermost depths of his divine intuitions. A spurious prophecy attributed to Hosea See how, by the Notarikon method of kabbalistic reading, one could make biblical sentences read almost anything. The Seven Scales of Consciousness Every sense is primarily a mental sense. The transference of a sensation from any organ to consciousness is nearly instantaneous. The Occultist should train himself to receive and transmit along the line of the seven scales of his consciousness every impression simultaneously. He who does this quicker progresses faster. The consciousness of the Higher Ego is atomic and spiritual, and so are the atoms which form the higher principles of the man. That of the lower ego is molecular, forming around the atoms, and is normally invisible unless condensed. The Higher Ego, being the subject of every state of consciousness, is Absolute Unity. Knowing, feeling, and willing are not faculties of the lower mind.

In terms of the Sacred Word, Nara is A, the Germ, Divine Spirit or Holy Ghost, that fecundates Nari or U, Kosmos’ Virgin Matrix or Waters of Life, which is an emanation of Itself. Narayana is M, the Spirit of God, moving the two into existence. Narayana is The ONE or the Pythagorean Monas, dwelling in solitude and darkness. Says a Master of Wisdom: “Pythagoras had a reason for never using the finite, useless figure 2, and for altogether discarding it. The ONE can, when manifesting, become only Three. The unmanifested, when a simple duality, remains passive and concealed.” Narayana is the Eternal Breath of the Unconscious All, ever arousing the slumbering Waters of Life, which are the Noumenon of Matter also bearing Latent Spirit. He is the ONE and only Cause of Duality. Narayana is the seventh and highest principle of our solar system. He throbs in the heart of every spiritual man, and everywhere. He is Logos Itself. Genesis’ “Heaven and Earth” alludes to the separation of the Primordial Substance to Light in its upper (Spirit), and Darkness in its lower portions (Matter), i.e., to the separation of the invisible from the visible by the Firmament, which is the manifested Universe. Narayana may be plunged in the Waters of Wisdom but He is not the God of the Waters. Varuna is the Vedic God of the Waters of Space, Akasha or “Heaven,” and prototype of the Greek Ouranos. “He who breaks Varuna’s laws is punished by Indra.” For Indra is the Vedic God of the real Firmament, or Mahat-Nous, and prototype of the Illusion of Separateness.

As the differentiation of the Divine Monas precedes the evolution of the Dhyani-Chohans of the Third Hierarchy of Being in the primary creation, before those Devas can occupy their first ethereal form, so animal creation has to precede the evolution of man on earth. Then the Great Breath vibrates and differentiates the primordial, first manifested Atom. How could you make yourself understood by those semi-intelligent Forces, whose means of communication with us are not through spoken words but through sounds and colours in correlated vibrations between the two? By employing sound, light and colours, which are understood by these grades of intelligence. Light and heat are ghosts of matter in motion. Natural-born magicians are those whose inner selves are connected, by reason of their direct descent, with that group of Dhyani-Chohans who are “the first-born of Ether.” No substance possesses any inherent gustatory or olfactory property. Taste and odour are mere sensations caused by vibrations — hence illusionary perceptions. We taste and smell in our dreams and visions. Akasha is primordial substance, the vehicle of Divine Thought. Knowledge of Akasha and other mysteries can alone lead to knowledge of the Forces of Nature. Could air exist if there were no etheric medium in Space to buoy up its molecules? The waves and undulations of Science are all produced by atoms propelling their molecules into activity from within. Atoms fill the immensity of Space and, by their continuous vibration, are Eternal Motion (Atman), cyclic and spiral, which keeps the wheels of Life rolling.
