Book John McAndrew s Modernist Vision

Download or read book John McAndrew s Modernist Vision written by Mardges Bacon and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2018-11-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John McAndrew's Modernist Vision tells the compelling story of the architect, scholar, and curator John McAndrew, who played a key role in redefining modernism in the United States from the 1930s onward. The designer of the Vassar College Art Library—arguably the first modern interior on a college campus—and the curator of architecture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from 1937 to 1941, McAndrew was instrumental in creating a distinct and innovative aesthetic that bridged the European modernist lineage and American regional vernacular. Providing a fascinating glimpse into McAndrew's life, his associations with important architects and artists, and the historical context that shaped his work, this book is a thoroughly researched testament to a man who left a powerful mark on the evolution of American architecture.

Book excerpt: Dale Chihuly's Ulysses Cylinders-with drawings by Seaver Leslie adapted to glass-follow the course of James Joyce's Ulysses. They capture the spirit of the novel and its place in Irish culture, bringing new light to one of the masterpieces of the 20th Century.Striking, enigmatic, and provocative, the Cylinders stand as some of Chihuly's most intellectually compelling and unique works. In this new book, stunning images of the Cylinders are accompanied by essays from art and literary critics which frame the history and significance of both Chihuly's work and the work of Joyce.

Book Time and Transformation in Seventeenth century Dutch Art

Download or read book Time and Transformation in Seventeenth century Dutch Art written by Susan Donahue Kuretsky and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time and Transformation brings together a variety of seventeenth-century Dutch paintings and works on paper in a major examination of themes dealing with the transformative effects of time and circumstance. The Dutch were fascinated with this idea and the variety of motifs used to convey it. Included are images of local landscapes with medieval structures left in ruins in the wake of the Spanish wars, depictions of rustic cottages and farmhouses, Dutch Italianate landscapes with Roman ruins, and representations of accidental ruins caused by flood or fire. Non-architectural imagery, such as vanitas still lifes and depictions of ruined trees encourage broader thinking on the meanings and associations of images of the fragmentary. Among the artists included are Rembrandt, Jacob van Ruisdael, Jan van Goyen, Abraham Bloemaert, Willem Kalf, Gerard Dou, and Bartholomaus Breenberg.

Book Architectural Invention in Renaissance Rome

Download or read book Architectural Invention in Renaissance Rome written by Yvonne Elet and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Villa Madama, Raphael's late masterwork of architecture, landscape, and decoration for the Medici popes, is a paradigm of the Renaissance villa. The creation of this important, unfinished complex provides a remarkable case study for the nature of architectural invention. Drawing on little known poetry describing the villa while it was on the drawing board, as well as ground plans, letters, and antiquities once installed there, Yvonne Elet reveals the design process to have been a dynamic, collaborative effort involving humanists as well as architects. She explores design as a self-reflexive process, and the dialectic of text and architectural form, illuminating the relation of word and image in Renaissance architectural practice. Her revisionist account of architectural design as a process engaging different systems of knowledge, visual and verbal, has important implications for the relation of architecture and language, meaning in architecture, and the translation of idea into form.
