Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "According to the International Association for Ambulatory Surgery (IAAS), ambulatory surgery should be defined as: 'an operation/procedure, excluding an office or outpatient operation/procedure, where the patient is discharged on the same working day'. The origins of ambulatory surgery can be traced back to the pioneering work of James Nicholl at the Glasgow Royal Hospital who reported 8988 paediatric day case procedures between 1899-1908. Despite initial scepticism from the surgical profession, there has been a rapid expansion in the complexity and amount of ambulatory surgery in recent years: between 1989-2003 the percentage of elective surgery undertaken as day case in the UK increased from 15% to 70%. Many health services have set targets for the percentage of elective surgeries to be done as day-case procedures and in the UK this target is set at 75%"--

Download or read book Robot Assisted Radical Prostatectomy written by John W. Davis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-22 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses knowledge gaps in RARP in 3 key sections: 1) Step-by-step approach including multiple technique options and innovations, 2) Patient selection, safety, outcomes, and 3) Preparing the patient for surgery. The order is more based upon knowledge priority rather than a chronologic sequence in which part 3 would go first. Part two allows more summary and commentary on evidence and part three allows some creative content that is otherwise hard to find in one place—medical evaluations, imaging, clinical trials, patient education, etc. This textbook emphasizes content for the advanced skills surgeon in that multiple techniques are presented as well as state of the art evidence. The learning curve is addressed and the authors clarify how this text is useful for learners. The caveat is that they should be careful in patient selection and stick with what their mentors are showing them. With experience, they can then branch out into the many techniques presented here. Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy: Beyond the Learning Curve will also have cross-over appeal for surgical assistants, physician assistants, nurses, and anyone else involved in the surgical care of prostate cancer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even the best hernia repair can result in postoperative difficulties for the patient caused by repair sequelae as for example pain, infertility, infection, adhesion and dislocation of the protheses. That can happen many years later and now, where the general principle of hernia repair is well understood all over the world, these sequelae are noticed more and more. To define them, to evaluate the absolute and relative risk of these sequelaes and to describe the ways of their prevention, diagnosis and treatment, the 5th Suvretta meeting had focussed on this subject. We discussed if there’s a principle risk by technique, material or both. The results of these discussions and the future handling and evaluation of this problem was the aim of this meeting. Even the best method can be made better by optimization of its single components. Download or read book When Doctors Kill written by Joshua A. Perper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-14 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It would come as no surprise that many readers may be shocked and intrigued by the title of our book. Some (especially our medical colleagues) may wonder why it is even worthwhile to raise the issue of killing by doctors. Killing is clearly an- thetical to the Art and Science of Medicine, which is geared toward easing pain and suffering and to saving lives rather than smothering them. Doctors should be a source of comfort rather than a cause for alarm. Nevertheless, although they often don’t want to admit it, doctors are people too. Physicians have the same genetic library of both endearing qualities and character defects as the rest of us but their vocation places them in a position to intimately interject themselves into the lives of other people. In most cases, fortunately, the positive traits are dominant and doctors do more good than harm. While physicists and mathematicians paved the road to the stars and deciphered the mysteries of the atom, they simultaneously unleashed destructive powers that may one day bring about the annihilation of our planet. Concurrently, doctors and allied scientists have delved into the deep secrets of the body and mind, mastering the anatomy and physiology of the human body, even mapping the very molecules that make us who we are. But make no mistake, a person is not simply an elegant b- logical machine to be marveled at then dissected.
