The action is centered in the middle '20's, in the small, poverty-striken area of the Via del Corno, where men like Lando, a sniveling pimp, are alternating in and out of prison; where the Signora, a retired, diseased ex-prostitute, turned lesbian, battens on young girls; where Maciste, a blacksmith, is killed by Fascists because he is a Communist; where the Nesi, coal merchant, brutalizes any woman that appeals to him; where everybody goes to bed with everybody else; and where the neighbors lean out of windows and exchange unsavory gossip avidly. The couple of good characters are well hidden in the mire. In an effort to make his novel tight, the author has attempted to squeeze a galaxy of "universal" types into too small an area and the result belongs in the Department of Utter Confusion. It lacks light, air, space, and in his effort to be significant, Pratolini succeeds only in being trite."--Kirkus

In admirably clear and elegant prose, Duncan analyzes texts ranging from the 1890s through the 1990s. He brings canonical authors like D'Annunzio and Pasolini together with under-appreciated writers like Comisso, and also looks at less conventionally literary genres. Duncan takes on the thorny theoretical issues surrounding questions of gay identity and also provides a sound historical context for his discussion of how Italian narrative sheds light on Italian homosexuality and on the broader issues attending contemporary sexuality, including complicating factors such as race. While the early texts considered were produced at a historical moment when 'homosexuality' as a culturally meaningful entity had yet to crystallize, recent autobiographies show the authors reflecting explicitly on questions of gay identity and what it means to be a homosexual male in present-day Italy. In charting the emergence of the homosexual in twentieth-century Italy, however, Duncan's focus is less on questions of identity than on the meaning attributed to sex between men in the broader cultural context. His book is a significant contribution to Italian literary criticism and to gender, gay, and cultural studies.

Book excerpt: The main emphasis of this study is on a thematic approach to Vasco Pratolini's quest for Paradise as a means of escaping a nihilistic view of history. Pratolini lived through the rise and fall of Fascism. He believed that his art should carry a didactic message and be capable of transforming evil historical events. Like many Neorealist writers, Pratolini incorporated a theological interpretation of history in his works. He merged Judeo-Christian beliefs with Communist dogma with the outcome being hope in an eschatological Age of Gold which was physically possible on earth. In this study Pratolini's novels from 1939 to 1966 are examined. With respect to the totality of his works, it becomes evident that Pratolini's quest was ultimately a search for truth, which was nurtured by his profound belief in the Resistance Movement. But after the collapse of the Fascist regime and the rebirth of Fascism, Pratolini realized that his attempt to lead a cultural transformation of Italian society was illusory. This resulted in an existential and literary crisis in his novels from 1947 to 1960. The last chapter of this study concludes with a discussion of Pratolini's novel Allegoria e derisione and a potential resolution of his existential crisis.

Born in Italy and successfully exported to the rest of the world, photoromances had a readership of millions in the postwar years. By the early 1960s, more than ten million Italians read a photoromance each week. Despite its popularity, the photoromance—a form of graphic storytelling that uses photographs instead of drawings—was widely scorned as a medium, and its largely female audience derided as naive, pathetic, and uneducated. In this provocative book, Paola Bonifazio offers another perspective, making a case for the relevance of the photoromance for both feminism and media culture. She argues that the photoromance pioneered storytelling across platforms, elevated characters and artists into brands, and nurtured a devoted fan base. Moreover, Bonifazio shows that female readers—condescended to by intellectuals, journalists, and politicians of both the left and the right—powered the Italian photoromance industry's success. Bonifazio examines the “convergence culture” of Italian media as photoromance magazines dispersed their content across multiple formats, narrative conventions, editorial and business strategies, and platforms. The plots of photoromances often resembled the storylines of romantic films, and film stars themselves often appeared in photoromances. Bonifazio discusses the media habits of photoromance readers; the use of photoromances to promote political, religious, and social agendas, including a campaign for “birth control in comics”; and long-term fandom. While publishers built lifelong relationships with their readers, the readers built a common identity and culture.

Ross uses the works of writers such as Federigo Tozzi, Aldo Palazzeschi, Vasco Pratolini, and Elena Gianini Belotti, to seek out alternative visions of Tuscan space and emphasizes that each author fashions the region in a manner which reflects their personal poetics, background, and experiences. Theories of cultural geography, space, travel, and narrative contribute to Ross's consideration of the dualisms commonly employed in writings about Tuscany, such as country/city, nature/culture, female/male, and self/other, all of which are in turn affected by her interrogation of the local/foreign opposition that underlies the study as a whole.

Peterson considers the categories of vatic poetry, the feminine voice, and the writings of those situated on Italy's cultural periphery. As practitioners of literary Italian, Peterson argues that these authors are conscious of their role in preserving both language and tradition during a period of great upheaval and national transformation. At the same time, they use their writings to move towards change, combat alienation, and reconfigure the self in relation to the community.
