Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinctive style of the Regency period is a source of endless fascination for fashion academics and historians, living historians, re-enactors and costume designers for stage and screen. Author and fashion historian Cassidy Percoco has delved into little-known museum hoards to create a stunning collection of 26 garments, many with clear provenance tied to a specific location, which have never before been published and never – or very rarely – displayed. Most of the garments have an aspect in their construction that has not been previously documented, from a style of skirt trim to the method of gown closure. This practical guide begins with a general history of the early 19th-century women's dress. This is followed by 26 patterns of gowns, spencers, chemises, and corsets, each with an illustration of the finished piece and description of its construction. This must-have guide is an essential reference for anyone interested in the fashions or the history of the period, or for anyone wishing to recreate their own beautiful Regency clothing.

Book One Hundred Dresses

Download or read book One Hundred Dresses written by Costume Institute (New York, N.Y.) and published by Fashion Studies. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harold Koda is curator in charge of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His introduction to this pretty book says it all: it is merely a sampling of the institute's extraordinary and renowned holdings of 35,000 costumes and accessories. While such considerations as "historical significance, rarity, or technical virtuosity" are very much in play in the selections, Koda admits that "the 100 dresses in the book are often simply the special favorites of one or another of The Costume Institute staff." And what favorites they are: arranged chronologically, the dresses (mostly evening ensembles) are from the late 1800s to the 2000s and display luxe and meticulousness beyond compare. The illustrations are lovely and clear (the few runway images are a bit jarring among all the mannequins), and the descriptions are brief but interesting--on a par with what one might see in an exhibition. Koda suggests that a follow-up book would not be out of the question. If so, an index by designer, provenance for each dress in the text (rather than having this information relegated to the "credits" at the end), and a select bibliography should accompany the glossary. This reviewer votes for inclusion of Jean-Paul Gaultier's 2001 Des Robes qui se Derobent. This is by no means a scholarly work, and likely will not be used in a library setting; the Costume Institute's Web site is well developed and offers considerable information. This volume would be suitable for comprehensive fashion and clothing collections or an excellent gift for a favorite fashionista. Summing Up: Optional. General readers and practitioners. General Readers; Professionals/Practitioners. Reviewed by C. Stevens.

Book Some Liked It Hot

  • Author : Kristin A. McGee
  • Publisher : Wesleyan University Press
  • Release : 2010-03-01
  • ISBN : 0819569674

Download or read book Some Liked It Hot written by Kristin A. McGee and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have been involved with jazz since its inception, but all too often their achievements were not as well known as those of their male counterparts. Some Liked It Hot looks at all-girl bands and jazz women from the 1920s through the 1950s and how they fit into the nascent mass culture, particularly film and television, to uncover some of the historical motivations for excluding women from the now firmly established jazz canon. This well-illustrated book chronicles who appeared where and when in over 80 performances, captured in both popular Hollywood productions and in relatively unknown films and television shows. As McGee shows, these performances reflected complex racial attitudes emerging in American culture during the first half of the twentieth century. Her analysis illuminates the heavily mediated representational strategies that jazz women adopted, highlighting the role that race played in constituting public performances of various styles of jazz from “swing” to “hot” and “sweet.” The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Hazel Scott, the Ingenues, Peggy Lee, and Paul Whiteman are just a few of the performers covered in the book, which also includes a detailed filmography.

Book Extras of Early Hollywood

Download or read book Extras of Early Hollywood written by Kerry Segrave and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pity the "extras." Mostly overlooked and forgotten. Especially those in the major Hollywood films 1913 to 1945--right through the dream factory's golden era. The struggles of extras to unionize were followed by internal struggles as the extras fought for a voice within that union. There were just too few jobs for far too many extras, some of whom were lured to Hollywood by what seemed to be rags-to-riches tales of stardom (but which were likely little more than industry publicity plants). Once lured to the film capital the reality was much different: low pay, little or no work, ripoffs from private employment agencies, and sexual harassment of the women, likely very much underreported. Some extras had special skills or language abilities, some had wardrobes replete with many period costumes.

Fortunately, mates can mind-speak, so Aaron is able to help Kate, but will he survive sneaking into the heavily guarded Transmute caverns to be with her? Can Kate learn to wield her power for good while fighting the evil, depraved Arganon, who craves control of her power? Kate and Aaron must overcome challenges that no couple should have to endure.
