This book was released on 2014-10-29 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Eroica Variations"---so-called because they were later re-worked for the finale of Beethoven's third ("Eroica") Symphony, Op. 55---occupy a prominent place in piano literature. Its structural grandeur and the originality and beauty of its piano writing set this work apart. The technical demands are considerable, on par with many other works from Beethoven's middle period. A brilliant finger technique is called for, and often the demands for speed and volume coincide. This edition, edited by Charles Timbrell, is based on the autograph, which served as the source-score for the first edition.

Book Beethovens Diabelli Variations

Download or read book Beethovens Diabelli Variations written by William Kinderman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-15 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Thirty-three Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli, Op. 120, represent Beethovens most extraordinary achievement in the art of variation-writing. In their originality and power of invention, they stand beside other late Beethoven masterpieces such as the Ninth Symphony, the Missa Solemnis, and the last quartets. William Kindermans study of the compositional history of the work includes the first extended investigation and reconstruction of the sketches and drafts, and reveals, contrary to earlier views of its chronology, that it was actually begun in 1819, then put aside, and completed in 1822-3. Kinderman also provides an analytical discussion of the complete work, and he demonstrates how insights derived from a close study of the sketches can illuminate Beethovens compositional ideas and attitudes and contribute substantially to a better understanding of this massive and complex set of variations. The book includes complete transcriptions of the two central documents in the genesis of the Diabelli variations - the reconstructed Wittgenstein Sketchbook and the Paris - Landsberg - Montauban Draft.

Based on a theme from the Eroica symphony, it actually allows us to see into the mind of Beethoven. It starts by variations on just the bass line, and then the 15 main variations take us on a musical journey that includes humorous variations, a canon in the manner of Clementi, a composer whom Beethoven particularly liked and admired, then a variation that's like a Beethoven slow movement, and finally a three part fugue in the manner of Bach, before a finale grandiose statement of the theme.

Book The Fugue in Beethoven s Piano Music

Download or read book The Fugue in Beethoven s Piano Music written by John V. Cockshoot and published by London : Routledge & K. Paul. This book was released on 1959 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author shows that Beethoven's fugues contain some of his most characteristics music. Each fugue is analyzed bar by bar in the closest detail, with many music-type examples. Yet this is not a mere technical and academic exercise. Inevitably the technical terms associated with fugue are used throughout, but the analyses are really studies in Beethoven's style, and aim to reveal his genius in composing the fugues and their relevance to the works in which they appear. As an introduction, the author has outlined the development of contrapuntal and fugal writing form the time of Palestrina, and gives a fascinating account of Beethoven's own studies in counterpoint and fugue with Haydn and Albrechtsberger. This is a book for all who have a serious interest in Beethoven's piano music, whether as concert pianists, as teachers and students in universities, colleges and schools, or as private teachers of the pianoforte and their more advanced pupils.
