Book Variational Principles of Continuum Mechanics

Download or read book Variational Principles of Continuum Mechanics written by Victor Berdichevsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-18 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reviews the two features of the variational approach: its use as a universal tool to describe physical phenomena and as a source for qualitative and quantitative methods of studying particular problems. Berdichevsky’s work differs from other books on the subject in focusing mostly on the physical origin of variational principles as well as establishing their interrelations. For example, the Gibbs principles appear as a consequence of the Einstein formula for thermodynamic fluctuations rather than as the first principles of the theory of thermodynamic equilibrium. Mathematical issues are considered as long as they shed light on the physical outcomes and/or provide a useful technique for the direct study of variational problems. In addition, a thorough account of variational principles discovered in various branches of continuum mechanics is given. This book, the second volume, describes how the variational approach can be applied to constructing models of continuum media, such as the theory of elastic plates; shells and beams; shallow water theory; heterogeneous mixtures; granular materials; and turbulence. It goes on to apply the variational approach to asymptotical analysis of problems with small parameters, such as the derivation of the theory of elastic plates, shells and beams from three-dimensional elasticity theory; and the basics of homogenization theory. A theory of stochastic variational problems is considered in detail too, along with applications to the homogenization of continua with random microstructures.

Download or read book Symplectic Elasticity written by Weian Yao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the new solution methodology by discussing plane isotropic elasticity, multiple layered plate, anisotropic elasticity, sectorial plate and thin plate bending problems in detail. A number of existing problems without analytical solutions within the framework of classical approaches are solved analytically using this symplectic approach. Symplectic methodologies can be applied not only to problems in elasticity, but also to other solid mechanics problems. In addition, it can also be extended to various engineering mechanics and mathematical physics fields, such as vibration, wave propagation, control theory, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics.

Book Introduction To Mathematical Elasticity

Download or read book Introduction To Mathematical Elasticity written by Leonid P Lebedev and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009-09-03 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the general reader with an introduction to mathematical elasticity, by means of general concepts in classic mechanics, and models for elastic springs, strings, rods, beams and membranes. Functional analysis is also used to explore more general boundary value problems for three-dimensional elastic bodies, where the reader is provided, for each problem considered, a description of the deformation; the equilibrium in terms of stresses; the constitutive equation; the equilibrium equation in terms of displacements; formulation of boundary value problems; and variational principles, generalized solutions and conditions for solvability.Introduction to Mathematical Elasticity will also be of essential reference to engineers specializing in elasticity, and to mathematicians working on abstract formulations of the related boundary value problems.

Book On Some Variational Principles in Elasticity and Their Application to the Theory of Two Phase Materials

Download or read book On Some Variational Principles in Elasticity and Their Application to the Theory of Two Phase Materials written by Zvi Hashin and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The establishment of some variational principles in the linear theory of elasticity and with their application to the determination of the effective moduli o two phase elastic materials is presented. The latter problem in particular and the problem of the determination of effective physical constants of composite materials, in general, received considerable attention. Because of the complexity of the problem, attempts to find effective moduli for such materials were based on simplifying assumptions. A more exact theoretical approach consists of the establishment of bounds on the-265 8174N2 AD-265 818Div. 17 U (TIPTM/SEB) Armament Research and Development Establishment (Gt. Brit.). Book The Linearized Theory of Elasticity

Download or read book The Linearized Theory of Elasticity written by William S. Slaughter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mathematical framework behind the theory is developed in detail, with the assumptions behind the eventual linearization made clear, so that the reader will be adequately prepared for further studies in continuum mechanics, nonlinear elasticity, inelasticity, fracture mechanics and/or finite elements. Prior to linearization, configurations and general measure of strain and stress are discussed. A modern treatment of the theory of tensors and tensor calculus is used. General curvilinear coordinates are described in an appendix.

Book On Variational Principles in Finite Elasticity

Download or read book On Variational Principles in Finite Elasticity written by N. C. Huang and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, two variation principles are formulated for the theory of finite elasticity. The first variational principle is an extension of Hu and Washizu's variational principle and the second is a generalization of the theory of stationary potential energy in classical elastostatics. New variational variables are introduced. The Euler equations are Rivlin's field equations expressed in terms of undeformed state variables for the theory of finite elasticity. Three examples are solved by the variational technique for illustrative pruposes. (Author).

Book Variational Methods in Nonlinear Elasticity

Download or read book Variational Methods in Nonlinear Elasticity written by Pablo Pedregal and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In less than 100 pages, this book covers the main vector variational methods developed to solve nonlinear elasticity problems. Presenting a general framework with a tight focus, the author provides a comprehensive exposition of a technically difficult, yet rapidly developing area of modern applied mathematics. The book includes the classical existence theory as well as a brief incursion into problems where nonexistence is fundamental. It also provides self-contained, concise accounts of quasi convexity, polyconvexity, and rank-one convexity, which are used in nonlinear elasticity. Pedregal introduces the reader to Young measures as an important tool in solving vector variational techniques. Readers are encouraged to pursue nonlinear elasticity as one of the best means to apply these techniques. Although there are other books devoted to nonlinear elasticity or variational methods, none are concerned with Young measures as a tool for proving existence results in nonlinear elasticity.
