Book Variational Principles in Heat Transfer

Download or read book Variational Principles in Heat Transfer written by Maurice Anthony Biot and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book develops a variational treatment of heat transfer which includes heat conduction and convection. It is intended to provide the foundation of a unified analysis of irreversible processes by methods analogous to those of classical mechanics. This opens the way to a formulation of heat transfer and dissipative phenomena in complex systems by means of Lagrangian-type equations and generalized coordinates. At the same time this approach suggests many approximate procedures and drastic simplifications applicable to the practical solution of a large category of problems in physics and technology. (Author).

Book The Method of Weighted Residuals and Variational Principles

Download or read book The Method of Weighted Residuals and Variational Principles written by Bruce A. Finlayson and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2013-12-30 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic book covers the solution of differential equations in science and engineering in such as way as to provide an introduction for novices before progressing toward increasingly more difficult problems. The Method of Weighted Residuals and Variational Principles describes variational principles, including how to find them and how to use them to construct error bounds and create stationary principles. The book also illustrates how to use simple methods to find approximate solutions, shows how to use the finite element method for more complex problems, and provides detailed information on error bounds. Problem sets make this book ideal for self-study or as a course text.

Book Advances in Heat Transfer

Download or read book Advances in Heat Transfer written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1994-03-10 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Heat Transfer is designed to fill the information gap between the regularly scheduled journals and university level textbooks, allowing for in-depth review articles on a broader scope than is allowable in either journals or texts. Reviews recent work on melt lubrication at the interface between two solid parts, one of which is at its melting point Employs variational principle with vanishing parameter in the study of linear and nonlinear transient heat conduction through bodies of finite length Reviews heat transfer in porous media and its rapidly growing body of literature Emphasizes recent developments in handling complex geometry, treating wide flow speed variations, yielding accurate solutions, and producing results efficiently as illustrated throughout with many examples Discusses unsteady convective situations which are generated in response to the time-dependent boundary conditions on the surface walls of a container, and its practical industrial applications

Book Variational and Extremum Principles in Macroscopic Systems

Download or read book Variational and Extremum Principles in Macroscopic Systems written by Stanislaw Sieniutycz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-07-07 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen a growing trend to derive models of macroscopic phenomena encountered in the fields of engineering, physics, chemistry, ecology, self-organisation theory and econophysics from various variational or extremum principles. Through the link between the integral extremum of a functional and the local extremum of a function (explicit, for example, in the Pontryagin’s maximum principle variational and extremum principles are mutually related. Thus it makes sense to consider them within a common context. The main goal of Variational and Extremum Principles in Macroscopic Systems is to collect various mathematical formulations and examples of physical reasoning that involve both basic theoretical aspects and applications of variational and extremum approaches to systems of the macroscopic world. The first part of the book is focused on the theory, whereas the second focuses on applications. The unifying variational approach is used to derive the balance or conservation equations, phenomenological equations linking fluxes and forces, equations of change for processes with coupled transfer of energy and substance, and optimal conditions for energy management. A unique multidisciplinary synthesis of variational and extremum principles in theory and application A comprehensive review of current and past achievements in variational formulations for macroscopic processes Uses Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms as a basis for the exposition of novel approaches to transfer and conversion of thermal, solar and chemical energy

Book The Nature of Motive Force

Download or read book The Nature of Motive Force written by Achintya Kumar Pramanick and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-23 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph Prof. Pramanick explicates the law of motive force, a fundamental law of nature that can be observed and appreciated as an addition to the existing laws of thermodynamics. This unmistakable and remarkable tendency of nature is equally applicable to all other branches of studies. He first conceptualized the law of motive force in 1989, when he was an undergraduate student. Here he reports various applications of the law in the area of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and solid mechanics, and shows how it is possible to solve analytically century-old unsolved problems through its application. This book offers a comprehensive account of the law and its relation to other laws and principles, such as the generalized conservation principle, variational formulation, Fermat’s principle, Bejan’s constructal law, entropy generation minimization, Bejan’s method of intersecting asymptotes and equipartition principle. Furthermore, the author addresses some interrelated fundamental problems of contemporary interest, especially to thermodynamicists, by combining analytical methods, physical reasoning and the proposed law of motive force. This foundational work is a valuable reading for both students and researchers in exact as well as non-exact sciences and, at the same time, a pleasant learning experience for the novice.
