Book Solution of Variational Inequalities in Mechanics

Download or read book Solution of Variational Inequalities in Mechanics written by Ivan Hlavacek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this book was developed in the seminar on problems of con tinuum mechanics, which has been active for more than twelve years at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague. This seminar has been pursuing recent directions in the development of mathe matical applications in physics; especially in continuum mechanics, and in technology. It has regularly been attended by upper division and graduate students, faculty, and scientists and researchers from various institutions from Prague and elsewhere. These seminar participants decided to publish in a self-contained monograph the results of their individual and collective efforts in developing applications for the theory of variational inequalities, which is currently a rapidly growing branch of modern analysis. The theory of variational inequalities is a relatively young mathematical discipline. Apparently, one of the main bases for its development was the paper by G. Fichera (1964) on the solution of the Signorini problem in the theory of elasticity. Later, J. L. Lions and G. Stampacchia (1967) laid the foundations of the theory itself. Time-dependent inequalities have primarily been treated in works of J. L. Lions and H. Bnlzis. The diverse applications of the variational in equalities theory are the topics of the well-known monograph by G. Du vaut and J. L. Lions, Les iniquations en micanique et en physique (1972).

Book Variational Inequalities and Frictional Contact Problems

Download or read book Variational Inequalities and Frictional Contact Problems written by Anca Capatina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variational Inequalities and Frictional Contact Problems contains a carefully selected collection of results on elliptic and evolutionary quasi-variational inequalities including existence, uniqueness, regularity, dual formulations, numerical approximations and error estimates ones. By using a wide range of methods and arguments, the results are presented in a constructive way, with clarity and well justified proofs. This approach makes the subjects accessible to mathematicians and applied mathematicians. Moreover, this part of the book can be used as an excellent background for the investigation of more general classes of variational inequalities. The abstract variational inequalities considered in this book cover the variational formulations of many static and quasi-static contact problems. Based on these abstract results, in the last part of the book, certain static and quasi-static frictional contact problems in elasticity are studied in an almost exhaustive way. The readers will find a systematic and unified exposition on classical, variational and dual formulations, existence, uniqueness and regularity results, finite element approximations and related optimal control problems. This part of the book is an update of the Signorini problem with nonlocal Coulomb friction, a problem little studied and with few results in the literature. Also, in the quasi-static case, a control problem governed by a bilateral contact problem is studied. Despite the theoretical nature of the presented results, the book provides a background for the numerical analysis of contact problems. The materials presented are accessible to both graduate/under graduate students and to researchers in applied mathematics, mechanics, and engineering. The obtained results have numerous applications in mechanics, engineering and geophysics. The book contains a good amount of original results which, in this unified form, cannot be found anywhere else.

Book Vector Variational Inequalities and Vector Equilibria

Download or read book Vector Variational Inequalities and Vector Equilibria written by F. Giannessi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with the mathematical theory of vector variational inequalities with special reference to equilibrium problems. Such models have been introduced recently to study new problems from mechanics, structural engineering, networks, and industrial management, and to revisit old ones. The common feature of these problems is that given by the presence of concurrent objectives and by the difficulty of identifying a global functional (like energy) to be extremized. The vector variational inequalities have the advantage of both the variational ones and vector optimization which are found as special cases. Among several applications, the equilibrium flows on a network receive special attention. Audience: The book is addressed to academic researchers as well as industrial ones, in the fields of mathematics, engineering, mathematical programming, control theory, operations research, computer science, and economics.

Book Combined Relaxation Methods for Variational Inequalities

Download or read book Combined Relaxation Methods for Variational Inequalities written by Igor Konnov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variational inequalities proved to be a very useful and powerful tool for in vestigation and solution of many equilibrium type problems in Economics, Engineering, Operations Research and Mathematical Physics. In fact, varia tional inequalities for example provide a unifying framework for the study of such diverse problems as boundary value problems, price equilibrium prob lems and traffic network equilibrium problems. Besides, they are closely re lated with many general problems of Nonlinear Analysis, such as fixed point, optimization and complementarity problems. As a result, the theory and so lution methods for variational inequalities have been studied extensively, and considerable advances have been made in these areas. This book is devoted to a new general approach to constructing solution methods for variational inequalities, which was called the combined relax ation (CR) approach. This approach is based on combining, modifying and generalizing ideas contained in various relaxation methods. In fact, each com bined relaxation method has a two-level structure, i.e., a descent direction and a stepsize at each iteration are computed by finite relaxation procedures.

Book Variational Inequalities and Network Equilibrium Problems

Download or read book Variational Inequalities and Network Equilibrium Problems written by F. Giannessi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings forth a set of papers presented at the conference on "Varia tional Inequalities and network equilibrium problems", held in Erice at the "G. Stam pacchia" School of the "E. Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture in the period 19~25 June 1994. The meeting was conceived to contribute to the exchange between Variational Analysis and equilibrium problems, especially those related to network design. Most of the approaches and viewpoints of these fields are present in the volume, both as concerns the theory and the applications of equilibrium problems to transportation, computer and electric networks, to market behavior, and to bi~level programming. Being convinced of the great importance of equilibrium problems as well as of their complexity, the organizers hope that the merging of points of view coming from differ ent fields will stimulate theoretical research and applications. In this context Variational and Quasi~Variational Inequalities have shown them selves to be very important models for equilibrium problems. As a consequence in the last two decades they have received a lot of attention both as to mathematical inves tigation and applications. The proof that the above mentioned equilibrium problems can be expressed, in terms of Variational or Quasi~Variational Inequalities also in the non~standard and non~symmetric cases, has been a crucial improvement.

Book Quadratic Programming and Affine Variational Inequalities

Download or read book Quadratic Programming and Affine Variational Inequalities written by Gue Myung Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quadratic programs and affine variational inequalities represent two fundamental, closely-related classes of problems in the t,heories of mathematical programming and variational inequalities, resp- tively. This book develops a unified theory on qualitative aspects of nonconvex quadratic programming and affine variational inequ- ities. The first seven chapters introduce the reader step-by-step to the central issues concerning a quadratic program or an affine variational inequality, such as the solution existence, necessary and sufficient conditions for a point to belong to the solution set, and properties of the solution set. The subsequent two chapters discuss briefly two concrete nlodels (linear fractional vector optimization and the traffic equilibrium problem) whose analysis can benefit a lot from using the results on quadratic programs and affine variational inequalities. There are six chapters devoted to the study of conti- ity and/or differentiability properties of the characteristic maps and functions in quadratic programs and in affine variational inequa- ties where all the components of the problem data are subject to perturbation. Quadratic programs and affine variational inequa- ties under linear perturbations are studied in three other chapters. One special feature of the presentation is that when a certain pr- erty of a characteristic map or function is investigated, we always try first to establish necessary conditions for it to hold, then we go on to study whether the obtained necessary conditions are suf- cient ones. This helps to clarify the structures of the two classes of problems under consideration.

Book Contact Problems in Elasticity

Download or read book Contact Problems in Elasticity written by N. Kikuchi and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contact of one deformable body with another lies at the heart of almost every mechanical structure. Here, in a comprehensive treatment, two of the field's leading researchers present a systematic approach to contact problems. Using variational formulations, Kikuchi and Oden derive a multitude of new results, both for classical problems and for nonlinear problems involving large deflections and buckling of thin plates with unilateral supports, dry friction with nonclassical laws, large elastic and elastoplastic deformations with frictional contact, dynamic contacts with dynamic frictional effects, and rolling contacts. This method exposes properties of solutions obscured by classical methods, and it provides a basis for the development of powerful numerical schemes. Among the novel results presented here are algorithms for contact problems with nonlinear and nonlocal friction, and very effective algorithms for solving problems involving the large elastic deformation of hyperelastic bodies with general contact conditions. Includes detailed discussion of numerical methods for nonlinear materials with unilateral contact and friction, with examples of metalforming simulations. Also presents algorithms for the finite deformation rolling contact problem, along with a discussion of numerical examples.
