Book excerpt: Excerpt from Variation Among Healthy and Deteriorating Aspen Clones Previously, Schier (1975) described the general pattern of deterioration in western aspen (populus tremuloides Poorly stocked deteriorating clones were found growing adjacent to well-stocked mature healthy clones. The occurrence of deteriorating and healthy clones on similar sites indicated that the age at which aspen ramets begin to die is genetically controlled. It was noted that deteriorating clones were visually distinguishable from healthy ones. Their stems tended to be shorter and branchier, and to have poorer form than the stems of healthy clones. Thus it appeared that the longevity of aspen ramets was correlated with various morphological characteristics.
