Download or read book Colonialism and Narrative in Puerto Rico written by Victor C. Simpson and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the effect of the colonial experience on the protagonists in the novels of Pedro Juan Soto, a renowned author of the Puerto Rican «Generation of 1950». Arguing - in keeping with Soto's generational and personal pessimism - that the protagonists are anti-heroes who struggle with their environment and succumb to it in different ways, it acknowledges that the themes of the Puerto Rican novel are firmly rooted in the island's reality, and offers a cogent review of the literary and socio-political context against which Soto's work must be understood. It also inserts Soto into the canon of post-colonial writers while foregrounding his realist approach to characterization, which is the author's means of articulating his social concerns.

Download or read book The Synthesis Novel in Latin America written by Eduardo de Faria Coutinho and published by Unc Department of Romance Studies. This book was released on 1991 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eduardo de Faria Coutinho's analysis of Grande Sertao: Veredas places the novel at the intersection of experience, literary history, and artistry. Walking the text's balance between the real and the imaginary, and focusing his reading on the thread of ambivalence that snakes its way throughout, Coutinho weaves together the text's dichotomies between ethics and aesthetics, rural regionalism and urban universalization, and socioeconomic and psychological epistemologies. This book also serves to place Grande Sertao: Veredas in the trajectory of the history of the Latin American novel, creating an accessible point of entry to the genre, and grounding the text firmly within the literary tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major bibliographic work reflects the significant interest in Latin American literature as a creative force in the world today. Rela who has provided Latin American bibliography with many ground-breaking contributions, has created a single, comprehensive reference work for serious scholarship on Latin American literature with sources through 1986. Among the criteria used to determine which authors and works would be included are originality, critical appraisal, and the interest the work held for professors, researchers, and students. The works are divided into general sections; each section is broken down by country and by genre (poetry, prose fiction, drama, essay) and annotations are provided for many works. The book concludes with an author index.
