Book Solenoid Operated Variable Valve Timing for Internal Combustion Engines

Download or read book Solenoid Operated Variable Valve Timing for Internal Combustion Engines written by Girish Parvate-Patil and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In internal combustion engines, particularly for spark ignition (SI) engines, valve events and their timings put forth a major influence on the engine overall efficiency and its exhaust emissions. By using variable valve timing (VVT) technology it is possible to control the valve lift, phase, and valve timing at any point on the engine map, in order to enhance the engine overall performance. In this study, effects of variable valve timing strategies on gasoline and diesel engines are discussed and analyzed. Also the static characteristics of a solenoid incorporating a permanent magnet as its core are developed, and validated with experiments. The permanent magnet core solenoid is novel in that a single electromagnet can provide bi-direction motion of the core motion. Its application to VVT can provide infinite position control and timing, force control such as to reduce impact forces, and latching capabilities, providing a novel actuator to the automotive industry.

Book Vehicular Engine Design

Download or read book Vehicular Engine Design written by Kevin Hoag and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-02-05 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanical engineering curriculum in most universities includes at least one elective course on the subject of reciprocating piston engines. The majority of these courses today emphasize the application of thermodynamics to engine ef?ciency, performance, combustion, and emissions. There are several very good textbooks that support education in these aspects of engine development. However, in most companies engaged in engine development there are far more engineers working in the areas of design and mechanical development. University studies should include opportunities that prepare engineers desiring to work in these aspects of engine development as well. My colleagues and I have undertaken the development of a series of graduate courses in engine design and mechanical development. In doing so it becomes quickly apparent that no suitable te- book exists in support of such courses. This book was written in the hopes of beginning to address the need for an engineering-based introductory text in engine design and mechanical development. It is of necessity an overview. Its focus is limited to reciprocating-piston internal-combustion engines – both diesel and spa- ignition engines. Emphasis is speci?cally on automobile engines, although much of the discussion applies to larger and smaller engines as well. A further intent of this book is to provide a concise reference volume on engine design and mechanical development processes for engineers serving the engine industry. It is intended to provide basic information and most of the chapters include recent references to guide more in-depth study.

Book Investigation of a Rotary Valving System with Variable Valve Timing for Internal Combustion Engines

Download or read book Investigation of a Rotary Valving System with Variable Valve Timing for Internal Combustion Engines written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the program was to provide a functional demonstration of the Hansen Rotary Valving System with Variable Valve timing (HRVS/VVT), capable of throttleless inlet charge control, as an alternative to conventional poppet-valves for use in spark ignited internal combustion engines. The goal of this new technology is to secure benefits in fuel economy, broadened torque band, vibration reduction, and overhaul accessibility. Additionally, use of the variable valve timing capability to vary the effective compression ratio is expected to improve multi-fuel tolerance and efficiency. Efforts directed at the design of HRVS components proved to be far more extensive than had been anticipated, ultimately requiring that proof-trial design/development work be performed. Although both time and funds were exhausted before optical or ion-probe types of in-cylinder investigation could be undertaken, a great deal of laboratory data was acquired during the course of the design/development work. This laboratory data is the basis for the information presented in this Final Report.

Book Hydraulic Variable Valve Actuation System

Download or read book Hydraulic Variable Valve Actuation System written by Mitchell Terpstra and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional engines with camshafts with fixed timings force a compromise between performance at high engine loads and fuel economy at low engine loads. Adjusting internal combustion engine valve timing and lift through a variable valve actuation (VVA) system is an established method of improving engine performance [1]. A fully flexible hydraulic variable valve actuation (HVVA) system in development at the University of Waterloo allows the valve timing to be optimized for any engine operating condition. This project is a further development of this HVVA system. First, the previous prototype was thoroughly tested and evaluated. Major design issues and challenges were addressed, and changes were incorporated into a new prototype design. This prototype was designed to be robust and more compact than the previous system. A completely new concept was developed for the phasing system used to adjust the valve timings. The new HVVA design was manufactured, assembled, and installed on a single cylinder test engine. Initial experiments of the new HVVA system validated its ability to change engine valve timing and match the profiles of different VVA strategies. The system was able to switch between different profiles in
