Book Vargamae Volume 1 of the Truth and Jus

Download or read book Vargamae Volume 1 of the Truth and Jus written by A.H. TAMMSAARE and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andres, an Estonian peasant, purchases a smallholding in a marshy part of the country, which the novel is named after. He takes his young wife, and an incident with their cow sets the tone for a life of struggle in which the family grows and gradually lifts itself out of extreme poverty. They don't only have to strive against the elements, but also against their neighbor Pearu, a wily and ruthless man. This Tolstoyan epic amongst the peasantry and the restless city (in volumes 2 - 4) tells the story of how Tsarist Estonia developed into the First Republic through the experiences of a family, and in particular the partly autobiographical character of Indrek, who leaves the land to get an education at the end of this volume. This monumental work by Estonia's greatest writer is a European classic which has for too long been neglected in the English-speaking world.

Book excerpt: Whilst visiting their holiday home in the country, a family discovers a digital camera in their grandfather's overcoat. Its presence in his pocket is mysterious - almost as strange as the images on the camera: pictures he couldn't possibly have taken, from impossible angles, all of which contain blurry suggestions of a humanoid shape. Nearly a century before, amidst the chaos of the Russian Revolution, a Latvian soldier deserts his post and travels by foot, recording his many strange experiences in a small journal that he keeps hidden in his boot. His encounters lead him to develop theories on space, time, freedom, and what it means to be human. He wonders, what if time is layered, like a stack of pancakes? What if a tree, with roots and branches that grow expansively in every direction, enjoys an ideal, perfectly balanced sort of freedom? The backdrop of this novel is a pivotal moment in Latvian history, however its scope is much broader. Bankovskis's story explores the ways civilization's many products alienate us from the natural world and from ourselves, but yet simultaneously drive us back into nature's embrace.

Apothecary Melchior is a divisive figure in the town: respected for his arcane knowledge and scientific curiosity but also slightly feared for his mystical witch-doctor aura. When a mysterious murder occurs in the castle, Melchior is called in to help find the killer and reveals a talent for detection. But Tallinn has a serial killer in its midst, and Melchior is tested to the limit in a plot with as many twists and turns as the turreted castle itself. Book excerpt: With a Scottish professor of politics as his guide, a London-based Italian journalist traverses Scotland seeking a "big story" on the independence referendum. What he gets instead are small stories from myriad points of view: a Ukrainian nationalist, a Russian religious guru, an eccentric Estonian, an Algerian and a dying man, amongst many others. After a chaotic romance with a Scottish campaigner, the journalist, aptly named Cinico de Oblivii, leaves his post in London for Greece, where, reflecting on his time in Scotland, he writes a memoir (this book). In which, we encounter the full spectrum of ideas on Scottish independence, including the ones Cinico's editor didn't want to publish. Cinico's stories examine how Europeans interpret each other and, more generally, how people relate. Like Candide, Cinico starts with the dominant mindset of his era, which is incapable of bringing him either understanding or contentment, but ends up with an awareness that, though insufficient for the elusive happiness we all seek, is sufficient enough for a perfectly acceptable human existence. "This self-described "rant" has some persuasive elements, especially in Cameron's discussion of the chances that Gaelic will survive in Scotland and his encouragement to raise children to be multilingual."-Library Journal.

Book Estonia and the Estonians

Download or read book Estonia and the Estonians written by Toivo U. Raun and published by Hoover Press. This book was released on 2002-02-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estonia and the Estonians provides the first compendious survey in any language of Estonian history, from prehistoric times to the twenty-first century. Estonia's strategic geopolitical location—a crossroads where the major powers of northeastern Europe have struggled for influence—and the small number of ethnic Estonians are crucial factors that have shaped the history of the area and its inhabitants. The book emphasizes the period since the mid-nineteenth century, when a national movement calling for Estonian cultural and political autonomy began to emerge. During the two world wars, Estonia gained and lost political self-determination. Yet a modern Estonian culture was firmly established, and a strong sense of national identity survived the Soviet era.

Book excerpt: A gripping love story, in which the classic love triangle takes a very untraditional form. The plot is centered on an Estonian university student who falls in love with a young Baltic German woman. The Baltic Germans had lost their aristocratic position since Estonia declared its independence. The young German earns her keep as a tutor for an Estonian family, and is not well-off. The young man, Oskar, starts courting the girl frivolously, but then falls head-over-heels for her. Before long, the prejudice that an Estonian and a Baltic German are of unequal standing stalks the couple. When Oskar goes to ask Erika's grandfather - a former manor lord - for the girl's hand, the meeting leaves a deep impression on him. Oskar finds himself wondering if he doesn't love the woman in Erika, but rather her grandfather; meaning, her noble descent. Does love depend solely upon the emotions of two young individuals, or are their origins, their social and cultural background actually the deciding factor?

Download or read book The Last Train from Estonia written by Jaak Jurison and published by . This book was released on 2016-02-23 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after the Soviet Army occupied Estonia in 1940, a boy's beloved father is arrested and sent to prison in Siberia, never to be seen again by his son. Soon the Germans will roll across the border . . . This gripping memoir of life in World War Two-era Europe gives eloquent testimony to the realities of being caught in the fighting between the armies of two ruthless dictators, Hitler and Stalin. Through the eyes of the observant young man he once was, the author vividly recounts events large and small, the intensely personal and the geopolitically significant. We feel the deprivations and uncertainties of foreign occupation, existence upended by forces impossible to anticipate. We feel the visceral fear of totalitarian authority, where home and person can be searched at any time and families deported to the desolate steppes of Siberia. Along with the author we experience devastating bomb attacks and two hazardous and thrilling escapes from the Red Army, one in Estonia, the other in Germany at the end of the war. We also learn how the author coped with the challenges of living in displaced persons camps in post-war Germany before immigrating to America. The Last Train from Estonia is a story of survival, of resilience and ingenuity, of love and luck, lives changed forever by hard choices made under extraordinary circumstances. This compelling account, written with long perspective, is more than mere witness to history. In its parallels to present-day conflicts in Eastern Europe, it serves as a timely warning to all who love freedom.

Book excerpt: The acclaimed author of Sovietistan travels along the seemingly endless Russian border and reveals the deep and pervasive influence it has had across half the globe. Imperial, communist or autocratic, Russia has been—and remains—a towering and intimidating neighbor. Whether it is North Korea in the Far East through the former Soviet republics in Asia and the Caucasus, or countries on the Caspian Ocean and the Black Sea. What would it be like to traverse the entirety of the Russian periphery to examine its effects on those closest to her? An astute and brilliant combination of lyric travel writing and modern history, The Border is a book about Russia without its author ever entering Russia itself. Fatland gets to the heart of what it has meant to be the neighbor of that mighty, expanding empire throughout history. As we follow Fatland on her journey, we experience the colorful, exciting, tragic and often unbelievable histories of these bordering nations along with their cultures, their people, their landscapes. Sharply observed and wholly absorbing, The Border is a surprising new way to understand a broad part our world.
