Download or read book Acquiring Intercultural Communicative Competence from Textbooks written by Lies Sercu and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates whether and to what extent foreign language textbooks can contribute to promoting adolescent pupils' acquisition of intercultural communicative competence. It gives a full scientific account of a research project carried out amongst Flemish learners of German. The focus of the research was on the relationships between the culture teaching approaches adopted in textbooks and the pupils' learning of culture. Although the sub-title refers to a particular group of pupils learning a particular language, the study has more general bearing and constitutes a substantial contribution to the literature, and in particular empirical research, on the development of intercultural competence in and through foreign language education. The composition of the volume reflects the affective, cognitive and contact dimensions of the culture learning process. It also gives space to the theoretical platform on which the research was built, and to the research methodology adopted. Chapter 1 sets out to contextualise and define the research topic. It clarifies the study's position within the field of culture-and-language learning-and-teaching theory, practice and research. It also situates the investigation into the specific context of teaching and learning foreign languages-and-cultures in Flanders. In chapter 2 the theoretical framework informing the study is developed. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the techniques of data collection and analysis employed, of the kinds of data collected, and of the chronology of data collection. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 provide an interpretative description and analysis of the investigation's key concepts. Chapters 4 and 5 focus on the pupils' culture learning processes and analyse relationships between attitude, contact and perception data. In chapter 6 the culture teaching approaches adopted in the investigated textbook series are described and evaluated with regard to their potential for promoting the pupils' learning of culture. Chapter 7, finally, provides a summary overview of the study's main findings and presents the main conclusions that can be drawn from the evidence presented in earlier chapters. It estimates the value of the study's research methodology and theoretical framework. It also reflects on how the research findings can find application and implementation.

Download or read book What when we have grown up written by Marieke Vandecasteele and published by Gompel&Svacina. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What when we have grown up?” dives into Marieke Vandecasteele’s doctoral research trajectory in a space between art and science. From her own position as a family member, the researcher starts to collect experiences of families of people with a label and makes trips to others who made visual or auditory creations about their sibling with a label. This book is a patchwork consisting of ‘patches’ rather than ‘chapters’, where different studies are stitched together. These patches take very different forms: sometimes through images, sometimes through film, sometimes through audio, sometimes through written texts, … In an affective way, it always opens up new ways of looking at and collaborating with families of people with a label. Making-thinking-doing is central: starting from making visual or/and auditory creations and relational encounters, combined with posthumanist literature, exciting cross-pollinations emerge that make space for other forms of knowledge in academia. This creative research can inspire practioners in welfare contexts as well students and researchers who are searching what research-creation practices can be(come) in the context of supporting families with labels.

Download or read book Mass Theatre in Interwar Europe written by Thomas Crombez and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideological heterogeneity in mass plays in Flanders and the Netherlands In many European countries mass theatre was a widespread expression of ‘community art’ which became increasingly popular shortly before the First World War. From Max Reinhardt’s lavish open-air spectacles to socialist workers’ Laienspiel (lay theatre), theatre visionaries focused on ever larger groups for entertainment as well as political agitation. Despite wide research on the Soviet and German cases, examples from the Low Countries have hardly been examined. However, mass plays in Flanders and the Netherlands had a distinctive character, displaying an ideological heterogeneity not seen elsewhere. Mass Theatre in Interwar Europe studies this peculiar phenomenon of the Low Countries in its European context and sheds light on the broader framework of mass movements in the interwar period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Verdiepende inspiratie geeft nieuwe levensenergie. Download or read book International Taxation of Philanthropy written by Ineke Alien Koele and published by IBFD. This book was released on 2007 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-profit organizations are increasingly subjected to the forces of globalization. Although this should not come as a surprise, it is curious to note that the taxation of international philanthropy is an area where discrimination as to residence is still very obvious. Whereas domestic philanthropic flows of money enjoy substantial tax privileges throughout the democratic western world, these privileges often do not apply in situations where borders are crossed. In recent years, the importance of support from charities and social investments has increased substantially, but cross-border philanthropy still remains hampered by numerous tax issues. By comparing the relevant legal and tax systems in selected countries, and by taking into account other legal developments relevant to international philanthropy, the author attempts to find a common approach to solve the tax obstacles of international philanthropy. The book begins by defining the scope of the study including the concept of "landlock", political philosophies substantiating tax relief for philanthropic organizations and an analysis of bilateral treaties. This is followed by a comprehensive and comparative overview of the approach taken in three legal and tax systems regarding international philanthropy, i.e. Germany, the Netherlands and the United States. The work also examines whether EU law allows states (within and without the European Union) to maintain "landlocked" tax positions and, if so, under what type of conditions this may be permitted. The book concludes with a proposal of a new paradigm of non-discriminating treatment of philanthropy by examining ways to abolish landlocks.
