Book excerpt: Vanuatu is a traditionally male dominated and largely patriarchal society. Women have extremely low representation in parliament and in other decision making bodies. Despite this, women are increasingly involved in private sector development and in the market economy. Available statistics suggest that women own nearly 30 percent of all businesses and approximately 20 percent of small and medium-sized enterprises. Yet, government support for women's economic empowerment and women in business has been limited, and reforms are needed to the general legal framework to ensure gender equality. This volume considers barriers to women doing business in Vanuatu using the World Bank Group's Doing Business indicators as a framework. By analyzing the gender dimensions of the cost of doing business, it considers how to take forward reforms to benefit both women and men. The authors argue that designing and implementing these measures makes good economic sense and will ultimately benefit all businesses in Vanuatu - those run by women as well as men.

Drawing from empirical studies undertaken in Europe, North America, Asia, and Australasia the contributions offer a range of theoretical and methodological perspectives, including large scale comparative data and case studies. They inform what is a key policy issue in the 21st century – the re-positioning of women in the academy and leadership. Despite a range of institutional equity strategies in which women learnt the ‘rules of the game’, this book shows that structural and cultural barriers – often conceptualised through metaphors such as sticky floors, glass ceilings, chilly climates, or dead-end pipelines – have not disappeared as might be expected as the academy becomes numerically feminized. Each chapter provides an insight into how historical legacies, cultural contexts, geographic locations, modes of regional and institutional governance, and national policies are mediated and vernacularized through practice by localized gender regimes and orders. Book excerpt: This book engages with a widespread contemporary dilemma--how do we do theology in a context where the cultures of the people are oral and not literate? The nations of the South Pacific, from their missionary beginnings, inherited an approach to theology that was dominated by Western cultural categories. The global movement of contextualization began to impact upon Pacific churches in the 1960s, and challenged this inherited approach. Significant changes have resulted, but the dilemma has remained. The dominant approach is still one that is defined by and better suited to literate cultures. The consequence is that theology remains an alien enterprise, distant from the life of the local churches, and distant from the hearts and minds of the indigenous people. In facing the dilemma, this book exposes the fundamental differences between primary oral cultures and primary literate cultures, and identifies the key factors that lie at the heart of the theological problem. By addressing each of these in turn, the author then paves the way ahead. He offers a methodology for theology that is rooted within the oral cultural context of the South Pacific . . . and potentially in any context where oral cultures are the norm. The consequences for theology and for theological education are profound.

The ‘amanaki (hope) of this work is in keeping talanoa (dialogue) going, in pushing back tendencies to wedge the theologies in and of Pasifika, and in putting native wisdom upon the waters.
