The novel takes its name from John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," one of the most famous work of Thackeray's day, in which a town called Vanity is depicted to represent man's sinful attachment to worldly things. Set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, "Vanity Fair" is Thackeray's classic satire of the societal trappings of Victorian England, self described as a novel without a hero. Yet today, many leaders, scholars, parents, and students are asking whether higher education has moved too far from its integrative tradition towards an approach heavily rooted in disciplinary "silos". These "silos" represent what many see as an artificial separation of academic disciplines. This study reflects a growing concern that the approach to higher education that favors disciplinary specialization is poorly calibrated to the challenges and opportunities of our time.
