Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first chapters of literary works are indispensable to understanding them. This is also true of the Gospels. Francesco Filannino shows that the introductory section of Mark's Gospel (Mark 1:1-15) is an important key to accessing the whole narrative, because it anticipates the main contents of the evangelist's theology.

Book The Cry of Jesus on the Cross

Download or read book The Cry of Jesus on the Cross written by Gerard Rosse and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-11-20 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cry of Jesus on the cross described in the gospels of Mark and Matthew was a wail of pain and abandonment. Many Christians have been scandalized by it. On one hand it is an expression of the humanity of Jesus, while at the same time it links him with his Jewish heritage and the rich imagery of the psalms. Italian theologian Gerard Rosse has examined the many meanings of Jesus' cry. He first considers the historical question - whether these were truly the words of Jesus. If we assume that they are, what do the words mean? Was it merely a cry of despair, or does it reveal something of the relationship between Jesus and the One called Abba? Theologically, what light does it cast on the inner life of the Trinity? Rosse also considers the reality of abandonment in the world today and what the outcry of Jesus reveals about our solidarity with all abandoned people.

Book Re Gained in Translation Volume 1 2

Download or read book Re Gained in Translation Volume 1 2 written by Sabine Dievenkorn and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2024-02-26 with total page 1016 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1: Translations of the Bible take place in the midst of tension between politics, ideology and power. With the theological authority of the book as God’s Word, not focusing on the process of translating is stating the obvious. Inclinations, fluency and zeitgeist play as serious a role as translators’ person, faith and worldview, as do their vocabulary, poetics and linguistic capacity. History has seen countless retranslations of the Bible. What are the considerations according to which Biblical retranslations are being produced in current, 21st century, contexts? From retranslations of the Hebrew Bible to those of the Old and New Testaments, to mutual influences of Christian and Jewish translational traditions – the papers collected here all deal with the question of what is to be [re]gained with the production of a new translation where, at times, many a previous one has already existed. Volume 2: Times are changing, and with them, the norms and notions of correctness. Despite a wide-spread belief that the Bible, as a “sacred original,” only allows one translation, if any, new translations are constantly produced and published for all kinds of audiences and purposes. The various paradigms marked by the theological, political, and historical correctness of the time, group, and identity and bound to certain ethics and axiomatic norms are reflected in almost every current translation project. Like its predecessor, the current volume brings together scholars working at the intersection of Translation Studies, Bible Studies, and Theology, all of which share a special point of interest concerning the status of the Scriptures as texts fundamentally based on the act of translation and its recurring character. It aims to breathe new life into Bible translation studies, unlock new perspectives and vistas of the field, and present a bigger picture of how Bible [re]translation works in society today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Dante and the Jesuits

Download or read book Dante and the Jesuits written by La Civiltà Cattolica and published by ucanews. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of 10 articles from the December 2020 edition of La Civiltà Cattolica, the highly respected and oldest Catholic journal published from Rome. In Italian Jesuit schools Dante was not a popular, nor recommended author. The article ‘Dante and the Jesuits’ by Giandomenico Mucci, SJ tries to explain the reason behind the popular misconception about the Jesuit’s attitude toward Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. For centuries, theologians, philosophers, cosmologists and scientists have been asking this question: Why do the laws of nature seem to have been fine tuned so accurately that they allow the development of living beings? Paolo Beltrame, SJ discusses the concept in cosmology called the fine tuning problem. The article The Power of Forgiveness reviews the book Apeirogon. Irish author, Colum McCann, approaches the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from an original perspective and looks at the conflict in depth. But the book does not claim to offer solutions or explanations. The White-Red Revolution in Belarus, began immediately after the announcement of the result of the polls, in August 2020, revealing a deep discontent and a desire for political transformation, a new government, which can neither be underestimated nor ignored. Giovanni Sale examines the issue more closely and within its historical framework in the article The White-Red Revolution of Belarus. Antonio Spadaro illustrates the importance of the ancient and wild environment of Sardinia and its nuraghes. He says the nuraghe’s nomination to be recognized by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site is an opportune occasion to dedicate time to study and research the development of sacred itineraries on Sardinian soil. The Emotions and Affections of Jesus opens a window onto the interiority of Jesus through accounts in the Synoptic Gospels. They show him capable of rejoicing and crying, of being moved and angry, of being indignant and loving, “meek and humble of heart” (Mt 11:29).

Book Making Amulets Christian

  • Author : Theodore de Bruyn
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-01-26
  • ISBN : 0191075906
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Making Amulets Christian written by Theodore de Bruyn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Amulets Christian: Artefacts, Scribes, and Contexts examines Greek amulets with Christian elements from late antique Egypt in order to discern the processes whereby a customary practice--the writing of incantations on amulets--changed in an increasingly Christian context. It considers how the formulation of incantations and amulets changed as the Christian church became the prevailing religious institution in Egypt in the last centuries of the Roman empire. Theodore de Bruyn investigates what we can learn from incantations and amulets containing Christian elements about the cultural and social location of the people who wrote them. He shows how incantations and amulets were indebted to rituals or ritualizing behaviour of Christians. This study analyzes different types of amulets and the ways in which they incorporate Christian elements. By comparing the formulation and writing of individual amulets that are similar to one another, one can observe differences in the culture of the scribes of these materials. It argues for 'conditioned individuality' in the production of amulets. On the one hand, amulets manifest qualities that reflect the training and culture of the individual writer. On the other hand, amulets reveal that individual writers were shaped, whether consciously or inadvertently, by the resources they drew upon-by what is called 'tradition' in the field of religious studies.
