Book excerpt: Adriaen Brouwer was born around 1604 in Oudenaarde. Recent archival research has now confirmed this. At an early age, Brouwer moved to the Northern Netherlands, where he spent time in Gouda, Haarlem and Amsterdam. He lived out his final years in Antwerp, where he died in 1638. Even though his life was short and turbulent, this remarkable master left behind an impressive oeuvre, small in scale but of outstanding quality. Varied and innovative: these are the words that best describe his work. From an art-historical perspective, Brouwer's paintings are of exceptional importance: as a groundbreaking master, he forms a bridge between the Bruegelian tradition of the 16th century and the genre and landscape art of the 17th century. His artistic virtuosity and the different layers of meaning in his work make him one of the most fascinating artists of the 17th century in the Low Countries. Brouwer's fame in his own time and the appreciation he enjoyed from other masters like Rubens, Rembrandt and Van Dyck stands in sharp contrast to the manner in which he is viewed today, where he still remains largely unknown to the general public. Adriaen Brouwer. Master of Emotions hopes to change this perception. Katrien Lichtert is curator of this ambitious exhibition. She has gathered around her an international team of art historians, who have analyzed and explained in depth the various aspects of Brouwer's work. In so doing, he demonstrates how silk, a resource crucial to state revenue and the only commodity to span Iran's entire economic activity, was integral to aspects of late Safavid society, including its approach to commerce, export routes and, importantly, to the political and economic problems which contributed to its collapse in the early 1700s. In a challenge to traditional scholarship, the author argues that despite the introduction of a maritime, western-dominated channel, Iran's traditional land-based silk export continued to expand right up to the end of the seventeenth century. The book makes a major theoretical contribution to the debates on the social and economic history of the pre-modern world.

The starting-point actually was Danish. Having treated the history of the Danish Asiatic Company during the period 1732-1772 I went abroad in order to familiarize myself with the background to the reorganization of Danish trade about 1732. It was especially the possible connexion with the dissolved Ostend Company and the counter-measures, diplomatic as well as economic, of the Dutch, English, and French companies that interested me. Through these investigations I got acquainted with the various Northwest European company records and soon realized that the Dutch archives offered a rich material, especially as regards quantities and prices. A study on the Dutch Company's trade in Japanese copper, a subject which had previously occupied Scandinavian historians in con nexion with the question of the status of Swedish copper on the European market in the 17th century, amplified my knowledge of the archives in the Hague to such a degree that I dared to tackle the greater object of giving a description of the Company's trade as a whole during its heyday. On various points it proved to be necessary to make comparative in vestigations, especially in the English East India Company's archives in London.

The manufacture of luxury textiles, such as silk, was central to an Italian Renaissance economy based on status and conspicuous consumption. From the rapidly changing fashions that drove demand to the jobs created for craftsmen, weavers, and merchants, the wealth and prestige associated with silk throughout Europe made it Italy's leading export industry. In this important book, Luca Molà examines the silk industry in Renaissance Venice amid changing markets, suppliers, producers, and government regulations. Drawing on archival research and a vast amount of European scholarship, Molà documents the innovations Venetians made in manufacturing and marketing to spur the silk industry. He uncovers the alliance between manufacturers and government to promote the industry in a changing international economic environment. Through flexible laws, quality was regulated to meet the varying requirements of an increasing range of customers. Molà also analyzes state policy that favored the development and organization of silk producers throughout the Terraferma. His findings contribute in an important way to the ongoing scholarly assessment of Venice's place in the economy of the Renaissance and the Mediterranean world.
