That portion from the entrance of Juan de Fuca Strait on the west, to Discovery Passage on the east, is by Captain G. H. Richards, R. N., during his survey of these coasts in H. M. Ships Plumper and Hecate, from 1858 to 1862; the remainder has been compiled from the journals of that officer and other documents, up to 1864, by E. P. Bedwell, Master, R. QUATSINO SOUND TO CAPE SCOTT. 253 Otter Cove, just west of San Josef bay, is about a mile long in a northerly direction, and from 2 to 3 cables wide. There are 5 fathoms in the entrance, and from 1 to 3 fathoms inside it, also several rocks; the shelter within is very indifferent, and the place only fit for a coaster. Off its south-east entrance point, and separating the cove from San Josef bay, are some small islets extending nearly a mile off shore; they are bare and yellow-topped, about 40 feet high, and conspicuous from the north-west. m CAPE Russeh, 16 miles from Ragged point and immediately westward of Sea Otter cove, is a remarkable headland 810 feet high, and the outer part of a peninsula formed by Sea Otter cove and a small bay north-west of it; some rocks, which break very heavily, extend nearly a mile south of the cape. From Cape Russell to Cape Scott the coast, from 500 to 600 feet high, trends in a north-westerly direction and is indented by three open bays. which are nearly a mile deep but afford no shelter whatever. 947).
