Book Typology of Writing Systems

Download or read book Typology of Writing Systems written by Susanne R. Borgwaldt and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typology research is extremely important in both proposing classification frameworks and in promoting the careful investigation and analysis of the core concepts inherent within the classification contrasts employed. More exemplary of the latter aspect, the present collection of papers on the typology of writing systems address a number of significant linguistic and psycholinguistic issues surrounding the classification of writing systems. The seven contributions within this volume, which originally appeared as a special issue of Written Language and Literacy 14:1 (2011), cover a wide variety of issues, ranging from an overview of writing system typology research, comparative graphematics, letter-shape similarities, the morphographic principle, tone orthography typology, measuring graphematic transparency, to unconventional spellings within online chat. Reflecting the growing interest in writing, the book will be of interest to advanced students and researchers working on writing systems, written language, and reading research.

Book There Is A Season

Download or read book There Is A Season written by Patrick Lane and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2005-02-25 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believed by many to be one of the finest poets of his generation, Patrick Lane is also a passionate gardener. He lives on Vancouver Island, a place of uncommon beauty, where the climate is mild, the air is soft, and the growing season lasts nearly all year long. Lane has gardened for as long as he can remember, and sees his garden’s life as intertwined with his own. And when he gave up drinking, after years of addiction, he found solace and healing in tending to his yard. In this exquisitely written memoir, he relates stories of his hard early life in the context of the landscape he’s created. As he observes the seasonal changes, a plant or a bird or the way a tree bends in the wind brings to mind an episode from his storied past. Lane writes evocative descriptions of the animals, birds, insects, and plants that are his garden, and of the relationship he has to them all. Accompany Lane as he wanders his garden, where botanical “madeleines” release in him a flood of memory.

Book Fewnomials

    Book Details:
  • Author : A. G. Khovanskiĭ
  • Publisher : American Mathematical Soc.
  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN : 9780821898307
  • Pages : 154 pages

Download or read book Fewnomials written by A. G. Khovanskiĭ and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1991 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideology of the theory of fewnomials is the following: real varieties defined by "simple", not cumbersome, systems of equations should have a "simple" topology. One of the results of the theory is a real transcendental analogue of the Bezout theorem: for a large class of systems of *k transcendental equations in *k real variables, the number of roots is finite and can be explicitly estimated from above via the "complexity" of the system. A more general result is the construction of a category of real transcendental manifolds that resemble algebraic varieties in their properties. These results give new information on level sets of elementary functions and even on algebraic equations. The topology of geometric objects given via algebraic equations (real-algebraic curves, surfaces, singularities, etc.) quickly becomes more complicated as the degree of the equations increases. It turns out that the complexity of the topology depends not on the degree of the equations but only on the number of monomials appearing in them. This book provides a number of theorems estimating the complexity of the topology of geometric objects via the cumbersomeness of the defining equations. In addition, the author presents a version of the theory of fewnomials based on the model of a dynamical system in the plane. Pfaff equations and Pfaff manifolds are also studied.

Download or read book Dogs at the Perimeter written by Madeleine Thien and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Remember this night,” he said. “Mark it in your memories because tomorrow everything changes.” One starless night, a girl’s childhood was swept away by the terrors of the Khmer Rouge. Exiled from the city, she and her family were forced to live out in the open under constant surveillance. Each night, people were taken away. Caught up in a political storm which brought starvation to millions, tore families apart, and changed the world forever, she lost everyone she loved. Three decades later, Janie’s life in Montreal is unravelling. Haunted by her past, she has abandoned her husband and son and taken refuge in the home of her friend, the brilliant, troubled scientist, Hiroji Matsui. In 1970, Hiroji’s brother, James, travelled to Cambodia and fell in love. Five years later, the Khmer Rouge came to power, and James vanished. Brought together by the losses they endured, Janie and Hiroji had found solace in each another. And then, one strange day, Hiroji disappeared. Engulfed by the memories she thought she had fled, Janie must struggle to find grace in a world overshadowed by the sorrows of her past. Beautifully realized, deeply affecting, Dogs at the Perimeter evokes totalitarianism through the eyes of a little girl and draws a remarkable map of the mind’s battle with memory, loss, and the horrors of war. It confirms Madeleine Thien as one of the most gifted and powerful novelists writing today.

Book Mathematical Knowledge Its Growth Through Teaching

Download or read book Mathematical Knowledge Its Growth Through Teaching written by Alan Bishop and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first BACOMET volume different perspectives on issues concerning teacher education in mathematics were presented (B. Christiansen, A. G. Howson and M. Otte, Perspectives on Mathematics Education, Reidel, Dordrecht, 1986). Underlying all of them was the fundamental problem area of the relationships between mathematical knowledge and the teaching and learning processes. The subsequent project BACOMET 2, whose outcomes are presented in this book, continued this work, especially by focusing on the genesis of mathematical knowledge in the classroom. The book developed over the period 1985-9 through several meetings, much discussion and considerable writing and redrafting. Our major concern was to try to analyse what we considered to be the most significant aspects of the relationships in order to enable mathematics educators to be better able to handle the kinds of complex issues facing all mathematics educators as we approach the end of the twentieth century. With access to mathematics education widening all the time, with a multi tude of new materials and resources being available each year, with complex cultural and social interactions creating a fluctuating context of education, with all manner of technology becoming more and more significant, and with both informal education (through media of different kinds) and non formal education (courses of training etc. ) growing apace, the nature of formal mathematical education is increasingly needing analysis.
