Descendants and relatives lived in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and elsewhere.

I Soon after the publication by the writer in 1881 of his Notes on the Ancestry of Major William Roe Van Voorhis of Fishkill, N. And its lodgment in the various Historical Societies and Public Libraries throughout the United States, he began to receive, from members of different branches of the Van Voorhees family who had seen the work in the aforesaid Societies and Libraries, letters giving the names of their parents and grandparents and where they had resided, and asking if it was not possible to connect them with some one of the grandchildren of the emigrant ancestor, Stephen Coerte Van Voorhees, mentioned in the Notes. These letters, being answered by the writer, gave rise to correspondences bringing to him considerable genea logical information respecting the various branches of the family, so that at the close of the year 1883 he found that he had collected over two thousand additional names o£ the descendants of the emigrant ancestor, and he then conceived the idea of devoting a number of years to the collection of material for a genealogy of the entire Van Voorhees family in this country, the result of which has been the present work. The writer does not claim the work to be complete, - few genealogies are, -but having exhausted all the known sources of information, and having written for family records to all the members of the family whose addresses he has been able to obtain, he has thought it advisable to publish what he has collected, in the hope that some other mem ber of the family may some time in the future take it up where he has left it and bring it to a fuller completion for the benefit of the Van Voorhees pos terity. Had more of the writer's letters to members of the family been answered, he would have been able to present a more complete work, but he would here return his thanks to those members of the family, and others, who have so kindly assisted him by furnishing names, dates, church records, etc., etc., and assure them that it is by their cooperation alone that he is enabled to give to the descendants of Steven Coerte Van Voorhees this genealogy of the family.
