Book The Flexible Professional in the Knowledge Society

Download or read book The Flexible Professional in the Knowledge Society written by Jim Allen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education policy has increasingly gained a European dimension, with its own distinct influence over national education policies. Against this background, a major project was launched, the REFLEX project, which aims to make a contribution to assessing the demands that the modern knowledge society places on higher education graduates, and the degree to which higher education institutions in Europe are up to the task of equipping graduates with the competencies needed to meet these demands. The project also looks at how the demands, and graduates’ ability to realise them, is influenced by the way in which work is organised in firms and organisations. The REFLEX project has been carried out in sixteen different countries and consisted of a large scale survey among some 70.000 graduates. This report presents the major findings and draws important policy implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The references to Charles the Bold's work, which are largely drawn from the accounts of the chambres des comptes at Lille and Brussels, amply illustrate the aesthetic preferences of the Burgundian nobility. All the relevant documents, most of which have not been published before, appear in appendix I. The second part of the book reviews the votive portraits of Charles the Bold. The circumstances surrounding the commission of the Liege statuette - Loyet's sole surviving work - are discussed in detail, and all documents relating to the statuette are included in appendix II. In the second chapter of part II, the focus is on the statuette's iconography, which is unique for a votive gift. Charles's motives are further investigated in the final chapter of part II, which discusses the votive portraits that he donated to other shrines. In the third and final part, the attention shifts to votive gifts, and more specifically to the genre of votive portraits.

Book excerpt: If Dr. Jameson Elders, the only man Elizabeth ever loved, a man of impeccable honor, could abandon her at the altar, then how could she trust any man with her heart. Driven by the pain and disappointment of her love's desertion on her wedding day, Elizabeth Beck leaves all she knows behind, traveling west to teach the children of the valley known as Misty Creek. She finds the valley very different than the windblown prairie, the broad land covered with swaying dried up grass of her travels, for it is a vibrant, fertile land alive and green. Though the valley resembles the familiar countryside of central Ohio, in Misty Creek Elizabeth faces a very different life. Isolated from the all things she has known, she must face difficulties, dangers, and deal with the pain she had hoped to leave behind. But she also builds lasting friendships and finds that the heart yearns for what she is certain it cannot have. Misty Creek is Elizabeth's story....

Book Reading Cicero s Final Years

Download or read book Reading Cicero s Final Years written by Christoph Pieper and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contributes to the ongoing scholarly debate regarding the reception of Cicero. It focuses on one particular moment in Cicero’s life, the period from the death of Caesar up to Cicero’s own death. These final years have shaped Cicero’s reception in an special way, as they have condensed and enlarged themes that his life stands for: on the positive side his fight for freedom and the republic against mighty opponents (for which he would finally be killed); on the other hand his inconsistency in terms of political alliances and tendency to overestimate his own influence. For that reason, many later readers viewed the final months of Cicero's life as his swan song, and as representing the essence of his life as a whole. The fixed scope of this volume facilitates an analysis of the underlying debates about the historical character Cicero and his textual legacy (speeches, letters and philosophical works) through the ages, stretching from antiquity itself to the present day. Major themes negotiated in this volume are the influence of Cicero’s regular attempts to anticipate his later reception; the question of whether or not Cicero showed consistency in his behaviour; his debatable heroism with regard to republican freedom; and the interaction between philosophy, rhetoric and politics.

Book Analogy and Exemplary Reasoning in Legal Discourse

Download or read book Analogy and Exemplary Reasoning in Legal Discourse written by Hendrik Kaptein and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together contributions from leading figures in legal studies on analogy and related forms of reasoning in the law. Analogical reasoning-which relies on the concept of two different things being in some way like each other-is hugely important not just in the practice of law, but it is nonetheless strongly contested. This volume raises key questions like: What is the logical, argumentative, rhetorical, or just heuristic force of analogy in law? Is analogy really different from extensive interpretation, reasoning by precedent and appeal to paradigm?

Book excerpt: With a variety of detection chemistries, an increasing number of platforms, multiple choices for analytical methods and the jargon emerging along with these developments, real-time PCR is facing the risk of becoming an intimidating method, especially for beginners. Real-time PCR provides the basics, explains how they are exploited to run a real-time PCR assay, how the assays are run and where these assays are informative in real life. It addresses the most practical aspects of the techniques with the emphasis on 'how to do it in the laboratory'. Keeping with the spirit of the Advanced Methods Series, most chapters provide an experimental protocol as an example of a specific assay.

Book Engaging Researchers with Data Management The Cookbook

Download or read book Engaging Researchers with Data Management The Cookbook written by Connie Clare and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2019-10-09 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective Research Data Management (RDM) is a key component of research integrity and reproducible research, and its importance is increasingly emphasised by funding bodies, governments, and research institutions around the world. However, many researchers are unfamiliar with RDM best practices, and research support staff are faced with the difficult task of delivering support to researchers across different disciplines and career stages. What strategies can institutions use to solve these problems? Engaging Researchers with Data Management is an invaluable collection of 24 case studies, drawn from institutions across the globe, that demonstrate clearly and practically how to engage the research community with RDM. These case studies together illustrate the variety of innovative strategies research institutions have developed to engage with their researchers about managing research data. Each study is presented concisely and clearly, highlighting the essential ingredients that led to its success and challenges encountered along the way. By interviewing key staff about their experiences and the organisational context, the authors of this book have created an essential resource for organisations looking to increase engagement with their research communities. This handbook is a collaboration by research institutions, for research institutions. It aims not only to inspire and engage, but also to help drive cultural change towards better data management. It has been written for anyone interested in RDM, or simply, good research practice.

Book Production of Biologicals from Animal Cells in Culture

Download or read book Production of Biologicals from Animal Cells in Culture written by R. E. Spier and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Production of Biologicals from Animal Cells in Culture reviews the state of the art in animal cell biotechnology, with emphasis on the sequence of events that occur when generating a biological from animal cells in culture. Methods that enable adjustment of nutrient feed streams into perfusion bioreactors so as to increase productivity are described. A number of issues are also addressed, such as the usefulness of the fingerprint method for cell characterization. Comprised of 135 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the problems and benefits of animal cell culture, followed by a discussion on the isolation of immortal murine macrophage cell lines. The reader is systematically introduced to the use of DNA fingerprinting to characterize cell banks; immortalization of cells with oncogenes; lipid metabolism of animal cells in culture; and energetics of glutaminolysis. Subsequent chapters explore serum-free and protein-free media; the physiology of animal cells; gene expression in animal cell systems; and animal cell bioreactors. The monitoring and assay of animal cell parameters are also considered, along with downstream processing and regulatory issues. This monograph will be of interest to students, practitioners, and investigators in the fields of microbiology and biotechnology.

Book Black Transparency

Download or read book Black Transparency written by Metahaven and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Google executive once said: "If you want to liberate a society just give them the Internet." But how does one liberate a society that already has the Internet? Publicly, modern government adheres to the twin ideals of institutional transparency and personal privacy. In reality, while citizens are subjected to mass surveillance, government practice goes unchecked. A new generation has taken to the Internet to defend the right to governance without secrets. From Bradley Manning and WikiLeaks to LulzSec and Anonymous, from the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative to the revelations of Edward Snowden, a coalition is breaking through the secrecy that lies at the core of the modern state. The story gets more complex when open government is contrasted with black transparency, and when a geopolitical rift between the West and Russia becomes the dividing line for whistleblowers and transparency activists seeking refuge. What is transparency for one may be propaganda for the other.

Book Votive Panels and Popular Piety in Early Modern Italy

Download or read book Votive Panels and Popular Piety in Early Modern Italy written by Fredrika H. Jacobs and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late fifteenth century, votive panel paintings, or tavolette votive, began to accumulate around reliquary shrines and miracle-working images throughout Italy. Although often dismissed as popular art of little aesthetic consequence, more than 1,500 panels from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries are extant, a testimony to their ubiquity and importance in religious practice. Humble in both their materiality and style, they represent donors in prayer and supplicants petitioning a saint at a dramatic moment of crisis. In this book, Fredrika H. Jacobs traces the origins and development of the use of votive panels in this period. She examines the form, context and functional value of votive panels, and considers how they created meaning for the person who dedicated them as well as how they accrued meaning in relationship to other images and objects within a sacred space activated by practices of cultic culture.
