Book Loanwords in the World s Languages

Download or read book Loanwords in the World s Languages written by Martin Haspelmath and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 1104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first work to address the question of what kinds of words get borrowed in a systematic and comparative perspective. It studies lexical borrowing behavior on the basis of a world-wide sample of 40 languages, both major languages and minor languages, and both languages with heavy borrowing and languages with little lexical influence from other languages. The book is the result of a five-year project bringing together a unique group of specialists of many different languages and areas. The introductory chapters provide a general up-to-date introduction to language contact at the word level, as well as a presentation of the project's methodology. All the chapters are based on samples of 1000-2000 words, elicited by a uniform meaning list of 1460 meanings. The combined database, comprising over 70,000 words, is published online at the same time as the book is published. For each word, information about loanword status is given in the database, and the 40 case studies in the book describe the social and historical contact situations in detail. The final chapter draws general conclusions about what kinds of words tend to get borrowed, what kinds of word meanings are particularly resistant to borrowing, and what kinds of social contact situations lead to what kinds of borrowing situations.

Download or read book The Sensible Cook written by Peter G. Rose and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most favored Dutch cookbook of the seventeenth century, The Sensible Cook (De Verstandige Kock) had a major impact on the foodways of the Dutch in the Netherlands and in their New World territories. As a part of the larger work, The Pleasurable Country Life, The Sensible Cook records the foodways of rich middle-class households, the cooking methods and typical dishes they prepared, and the implements and ingredients they employed. Often the recipes are surprisingly sophisticated. From braising a chicken with orange peel and cinnamon to stuffing pigeons with a mixture of parsley, ginger, sugar, butter, and raisins, many of the dishes are still appealing today. Peter G. Rose has, in fact, adapted some two dozen of the recipes for contemporary use—tempting dishes such as “Shoemaker’s Cake,” a delicious combination of bread crumbs, butter, eggs, and stewed apples. Handsomely illustrated with Dutch genre paintings, The Sensible Cook will interest cooks, food historians, students of social and cultural history, and the large number of Dutch descendants in America. Most important, this book will be welcomed by all who enjoy good food.

Download or read book Goddess Holle written by Gunivortus Goos and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the first German edition in 2001 and a second edition in 2006 (which was in 2011 also published in English), there is now a very heavily revised 3rd edition of the book "Goddess Holle". Even though the basic framework of the 2nd edition has been retained, not only are minor and major errors corrected, but all chapters, the book calls them 'paths', are supplemented with many additional new parts (in varying degrees). This new book has therefore become considerably more extensive, in quantity there are about 182 pages more than in the 2nd edition; it contains more fairy tales, many more folktales, more hiking trails, more poetry and more plants that have a connection to Holle. In addition, the chapter about Customs and Traditional Folk Knowledge has been significantly changed and supplemented, and so is the chapter "Researchers and their Research" in which the latest available research sources have been incorporated, and theories, theses, etc. have also been added that were not in the previous edition. To the concluding path 'Culinary delights with Frau Holle' also were quite a few recipes added. The many illustrations, of which about 115 in color (including 14 maps), form a significant extension as well to the previous edition.
