Book excerpt: The town of Van Buren was first named after the area post office established in 1831 in honor of Martin Van Buren. The town, which grew up on the Arkansas River, officially took its name when the city was incorporated in 1842. Van Buren's "golden age" occurred in the mid-19th century as steamboats brought settlers, migrating Native Americans, slaves, and European immigrants to the frontier. With Indian Territory (Oklahoma) nearby, Van Buren was an entry point to the West, not unlike St. Louis and Kansas City. After the Civil War, railroads replaced the steamboat as the main mode of transportation and resource distribution across the country. Later, Interstate 40 was built, bisecting the town and contributing to the city's heritage as a transportation center.

Book excerpt: A true story of sin, sex, and murder in a small Arkansas town. When Ruie Ann Park-a pillar of the Van Buren, Arkansas, community-was found beaten to death and lying in a pool of blood in her home, the police and local residents assumed the son was the murderer. But the years would uncover a more sinister story. Up till that night, the Park family seemed to have it all. For fifty years they owned and published The Press Argus newspaper. Hugh was well-connected politically and his wife, Ruie Ann, was the local historian, journalist, and teacher. They had a brilliant son and a shy adopted daughter. They built a beautiful home on top of Logtown Hill with a vista overlooking the Arkansas River, but their idyllic life ended with divorce. Ruie Ann stayed in the home, becoming more bitter and more demanding of the daughter who couldn't match up to her beloved son. The son, Sam Hugh, had a promising legal career but his fondness for young boys, alcohol, and drugs doomed what should have been a successful law practice in his hometown. The daughter, Linda, graduated from college, married an attorney, and moved away to a small town near Little Rock. The police were baffled. Who was smart enough to hide all evidence and pass the lie-detector test? And who would want to bludgeon this mother to death?

Book Bounty Hunters for the Innocent

Download or read book Bounty Hunters for the Innocent written by Royal Wade Kimes and published by . This book was released on 2021-08-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eli Denning and Taggart Moore had the dubious distinction of being well known bounty hunters. It was an occupation not held in high esteem by the very people who put money up for the capture of notorious bandits. The two of them trailed a pair of outlaws halfway across Texas to a place called Big Sandy Switch. The first night there, they slept in an old barn and woke up to gunfire the next morning. A thirteen-year-old overgrown kid was standing outside challenging them to a gunfight. Eli had to think quickly to avoid a gun battle with a boy who was self-described as shy on "thinkers." It was through that young innocent boy the two bounty hunters would be drawn into the heart of a community that held many secrets? some deadly. It turned out, the two outlaws they were trailing would be the beginning of much larger things to come. More outlaws began pouring into Big Sandy Switch. A train was coming with a payload of one hundred thousand in cash. The sheriff was anything but to be trusted. A devious banker and a woman of ill-repute who lived with her own secret past, were as bad as the outlaws converging on the town. All the black sheep were being watched and prayed over by a gentle talking but zealous preacher. They were all connected in some way, but one man with contempt and greed organized the operation and controlled the town behind the scenes. The question was? who? Eli was fast and accurate with a six-gun and Taggart was not any too slow. They would have to be smart and fast to stay alive in Big Sandy Switch. Their future, and the future of those who met them, was about to change course in a way none could have anticipated or believed.
