Book excerpt: Upon receiving a report about some noisy teenagers having a party up on a hill on the outskirts of the city, the police stumbles upon a group of people performing a pagan ritual. Amidst the madness around the bonfire, a policeman catches a glimpse of a woman running for her life behind the tree line. He follows to discover a peculiar old man taking the woman's life before his eyes. The old man is taken to a prison hospital and as his sessions with a psychiatrist begin - it appears as if the strange circumstances surrounding the woman's death have come to an end and the guilty have been brought to justice. But the true horror is just about to begin... FROM THE FOREWORD I have written this novel in its original form a very long time ago, in year 2005. "Vampire Grimoire" was originally just what is, in this book, Part One - Rebirth. The second part I've written in 2007 and then rewritten in 2008. Part Two - Huntress, with respect to the timeline of the story, happens before Part One. One thing that I've included in the novel, that wasn't there before, are photos of certain locations in Zagreb, my home city. Being a very visual person, I thought it would be beneficial for the story to actually be able to place yourself physically in the story instead of just imagining what the place looks like especially as I don't spend a lot of time describing locations in this book. Most of the characters and events in this book were inspired by actual events that happened in my life and the lives of people that I knew at that time. It is because of this reason that all of the names in this book have been changed for privacy reasons and any potential resemblance of names, as they are now, to any real people is entirely coincidental and not intentional. Going back to the story, there are many parts where you may feel that there are loose ends left behind. This is sometimes not intentional, as I wanted to maintain the focus on something else in the story. And sometimes it is intentional, as I wanted some things to be implicit and leave it to my readers to figure out. Many of my friends and acquaintances have already read this book and know this story. Some of them also knew which characters were based on real people and knew what really happened, so they also looked at the story from that perspective as well. However, it was quite interesting how different their interpretations of what happened in the story were. This is the main reason why I wanted to keep some things open to interpretation, as it's quite rewarding to hear the story, which plays out in only way in my mind, to play out in so many other ways in other people's minds. And to my satisfaction - the way they tell the story sometimes turns out to be an even more interesting story than the one I had in mind when I was writing it. I always used to say to people that I shared this book with- "half of this book is based on actual events and the other half is just fantasy used to spice things up a bit". Some people, after reading the book, found this intrigue as contributing to the story's charm while others, well, not at all, and as you read the book, I'm sure you'll understand why.

Even worse, he learns she's in possession of a grimoire that has the ability to end all vampires. Forever. She found it accidentally. She thinks. Except lately, she keeps using it, even when she's not sure she wants to. When Duncan captures her, the book disappears, and her neck is literally on the line. She can't find the book. He doesn't believe her. And then there's that weird demon guy who wants it too. With few options left, Duncan uses all his wiles to persuade Macy to give him what he wants. But somehow, he finds himself wanting her more than the book. And when it turns out she has a special connection to him and his kin, it's all he can do not to claim her for his own. But doing so might send him straight to Hell, eternally tortured, with the end to everything he holds dear.

Download or read book Grimoires written by Owen Davies and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a grimoire? The word has a familiar ring to many people, particularly as a consequence of such popular television dramas as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed. But few people are sure exactly what it means. Put simply, grimoires are books of spells that were first recorded in the Ancient Middle East and which have developed and spread across much of the Western Hemisphere and beyond over the ensuing millennia. At their most benign, they contain charms and remedies for natural and supernatural ailments and advice on contacting spirits to help find treasures and protect from evil. But at their most sinister they provide instructions on how to manipulate people for corrupt purposes and, worst of all, to call up and make a pact with the Devil. Both types have proven remarkably resilient and adaptable and retain much of their relevance and fascination to this day. But the grimoire represents much more than just magic. To understand the history of grimoires is to understand the spread of Christianity, the development of early science, the cultural influence of the print revolution, the growth of literacy, the impact of colonialism, and the expansion of western cultures across the oceans. As this book richly demonstrates, the history of grimoires illuminates many of the most important developments in European history over the last two thousand years.

Book Vampires Werewolves and Demons

Download or read book Vampires Werewolves and Demons written by Richard Noll and published by Bruner Meisel U. This book was released on 1992 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Make no mistake, this is a serious, scholarly, altogether professional book--but it also has all the elements of a Stephen King novel. Filled with real-life tales of mystery, misery, and psychological mayhem, it challenges us to realize the unfathomable and to reexamine traditional definitions of fact and fantasy. And Richard Noll proves a sure-footed guide as he crosses the boundary of standard psychiatric nomenclature into the world of identity transformation and blood obsession." "Meticulously researched and edited, the book brings together an international selection of contributions--historical and current--to reveal the depth and breadth of psychopathology as it manifests in vampirism, lycanthropy, and demonical possession. Mr. Noll's own explorations of the subjects weave together clinical, anthropological, and literary perspectives to create a rich and multitextured portrait of these psychiatric disturbances. As the labyrinthian nature of the human psyche unfolds within these pages, we are reminded again and again of the power of the beast that lurks beneath the surface of day-to-day existence." "This is not a book for the faint of heart. But for those whose thirst for knowledge compells them to question the unquestionable, it is a unique and provocative exploration of disorders that lie beyond the reach of current genetic, biochemical, and neurophysiological understanding."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
